Description

Senior Edge Full-Stack Engineer (POS & Payment Terminals) Business Objective: Accelerate the modernization of store checkout technology across an enterprise grocery retail footprint by systematically replacing legacy C++ point-of-sale logic with lightweight, highly responsive user interfaces and store-edge microservices. This role directly impacts checkout velocity, terminal stability, and in-store customer transaction processing by bridging desktop frontend applications with localized edge services running on store register hardware. Key Responsibilities: Frontend Terminal Engineering: Design, build, and maintain high-performance frontend interfaces for checkout registers and payment terminals using Flutter (Linux desktop focus) alongside React/React Native frameworks. Legacy Decoupling & Logic Migration: Inspect legacy C++ monolith code paths to map out embedded business rules, rewriting those functions into containerized Go/Java backend microservices and modern Flutter user interfaces. Edge Integration & Peripherals: Integrate checkout user interfaces with localized edge hardware and peripheral devices (e.g., barcode scanners, scales, payment pin pads, receipt printers) running natively on store-level Linux operating systems. Microservice Bridging: Connect local register UIs to store-edge microservices deployed via containerized environments (Kubernetes/K3s) to ensure fast, zero-latency local transaction processing and offline fallback capabilities. Pipeline & Quality Assurance: Partner with payment and software engineering teams to establish automated testing, branch commit validations, and release verification loops across physical hardware labs and simulated edge setups. Skillset Requirements: Desktop UI Development: Strong proficiency in Flutter development with explicit experience building desktop applications (Linux preferred) using Dart, supplemented by React or React Native depth. Operating Systems: Deep familiarity with Linux environments (Debian/Ubuntu/RHEL distributions), system-level interactions, desktop windowing/execution, and low-level peripheral communication. Backend Microservices: Hands-on experience developing backend microservices in Golang or Java (Spring Boot) designed for edge or high-concurrency environments. Containerization & Edge Infrastructure: Working knowledge of Docker, local Kubernetes distributions (K3s/MicroK8s), and deploying applications within localized, edge-computing footprints. API & System Design: Proven track record designing and consuming lightweight RESTful APIs, gRPC, or event-driven streaming communication layers between frontend interfaces and local microservices. Preferred Qualifications: C/C++ Baseline Knowledge: Ability to read, understand, and trace legacy C or C++ codebase logic to extract embedded business rules during platform migrations. Point of Sale & Payments Experience: Direct experience developing within retail Point of Sale (POS) environments, payment terminal platforms, EMV card processing, or hardware integration labs. Native Interoperability: Experience leveraging Dart FFI (Foreign Function Interface) or native bindings to interface cross-platform UI frameworks directly with low-level C drivers or Linux system calls. Automated CI/CD for Edge: Experience building automated integration testing pipelines (e.g., JBehave, custom test harnesses) for hardware-bound software releases.
