Cloud Engineer
Description
Position Summary The Cloud Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining secure, scalable, and reliable cloud-based solutions. This role supports business objectives by optimizing cloud infrastructure, automating deployments, and ensuring compliance with security and performance standards. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. 3+ years of hands-on cloud engineering experience in a production AWS enterprise environment. Demonstrated proficiency with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or equivalent, along with version control systems such as Git. Proficiency in scripting languages including Python, Bash, or equivalent for automation and tooling development. Strong understanding of cloud networking, virtualization, containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud security principles. Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and applying DevOps practices in cloud-native environments. Preferred Qualifications AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional), AWS DevOps Engineer, or Azure Administrator/Architect certification strongly preferred. Experience implementing FinOps practices and cloud cost optimization strategies at enterprise scale. Familiarity with monitoring and observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, or equivalent. Experience within pharmaceutical, healthcare, life sciences, or other regulated industries, particularly environments requiring GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, or HIPAA compliance. Hands-on experience operating Kubernetes in production environments (EKS, AKS, or self-managed), including cluster administration and workload management. Experience with cloud security architecture, including IAM design, secrets management, network security groups, and cloud-native security tooling. 3 years of experience working within Agile delivery methodologies. What You Should Bring Deep hands-on cloud expertise with experience building and operating production cloud infrastructure while maintaining accountability for reliability, security, and cost efficiency. A strong Infrastructure-as-Code mindset, utilizing Terraform or equivalent tools to create scalable, consistent, and auditable cloud environments. A security-first engineering approach, incorporating least privilege, defense-in-depth, and compliance requirements into solution design from the beginning. A cost-conscious perspective with a focus on maximizing cloud value, identifying optimization opportunities, and reducing unnecessary spend. Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with both technical teams and business stakeholders while tailoring communication appropriately for each audience. Key Responsibilities Cloud Architecture & Infrastructure Design and deploy AWS cloud architectures that meet performance, security, availability, and cost-efficiency requirements for enterprise and research applications. Architect and implement cloud networking, compute, storage, and identity solutions with security embedded throughout the environment using least-privilege principles, network segmentation, encryption, and defense-in-depth strategies. Evaluate and recommend cloud services, architectural patterns, and infrastructure approaches while considering engineering capability, operational costs, and long-term sustainability. Automation & Deployment Develop and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code frameworks using Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or equivalent technologies to ensure infrastructure provisioning is repeatable, auditable, and scalable. Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting cloud infrastructure and application deployments, ensuring changes are tested, validated, and deployed safely with rollback capabilities. Automate operational processes including patching, scaling, monitoring, alerting, and cost optimization to improve reliability and reduce manual effort. Security & Compliance Ensure cloud environments align with security standards, regulatory requirements, and data governance policies through effective implementation of identity management, secrets management, audit logging, and encryption controls. Continuously monitor cloud security posture, identifying and remediating misconfigurations, infrastructure drift, and policy violations through proactive compliance management practices. Collaborate with Cybersecurity teams to align cloud platform security with enterprise threat models and applicable regulatory frameworks, including GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, and SOX where applicable. Optimization & Operational Excellence Monitor cloud environments for performance, availability, and cost efficiency while proactively identifying waste, rightsizing resources, and driving FinOps initiatives. Contribute to platform engineering standards, reference architectures, and governance guardrails that enable development teams to consume cloud infrastructure consistently and securely. Troubleshoot and resolve cloud infrastructure issues effectively, participate in post-incident reviews, and implement preventive measures to reduce future recurrence. Show more Show less
