Join us and make a real impact in open science!Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Scientific Editorial Director and working closely with the Founding Publisher and the editorial team, the Scientific Editor will help shape and carry out scientific activities supporting high-quality publication, research integrity, and author experience.Key responsibilities include:Leverage scientific expertise to critically evaluate manuscripts for scientific rigor, methodological soundness, and other key judgments regarding quality and potential impactCommunicate professionally and effectively with authors and peer reviewers in providing constructive feedback on manuscriptsCollaborate with the Editorial Director, Editors-in-Chief, journal editorial boards, and staff on publishing high-quality openly accessible science in a set of JMIR Publications journalsMake editorial decisions on manuscripts in an efficient and timely mannerSupport high-quality and ethical peer review processesSupport recruitment and onboarding of new journal editorial board membersMaintain the highest standards of publication ethics and scientific integrityOccasionally write or edit editorials or content in support of knowledge dissemination and translation *Copyediting and scientific/medical writing are not core responsibilities of the position.QualificationsEducation:PhD, or MD or MD/PhD in the field of medical informatics or digital health, or adjacent fields such as public health, health services research; MSc or Masters in these fields may also be considered when there is applicable experience below.Experience:Active or prior scientist or academic clinician with expertise in medical informatics or digital health or adjacent fields such as public health or health services research with a basic understanding of biomedical statisticsExpert in at least a subset of research methodologies and evaluative methods involving human subjects research or health services research, including but not limited to quantitative methods (e.g., randomized trials, cohort studies, etc) or qualitative methodsProven publication record (peer-reviewed papers as first or corresponding author), ideally history of publishing with JMIR Publications journalsFamiliarity with reporting standards and ethical guidelines for publishing as well as awareness of the current new developments and changes in the publishing environment, such as preprintsExperience as a high-quality peer reviewer is expected, however, also having editorial experience is a valuable assetCompetencies:Problem Solving /Critical Thinking - Applies rigor, fact-based data, logic, and scientific expertise to solve difficult problems.
