Role Description The Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator is a full-time, on-site role based in the Austin, Texas Metropolitan Area. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining PostgreSQL database environments that support critical research and operational systems. Day-to-day tasks include performance tuning, capacity planning, backup and recovery, high availability configuration, and ensuring data integrity and security. The administrator collaborates with software engineers, system administrators, and researchers to optimize database schemas, queries, and application integrations. The role also includes monitoring database health, troubleshooting complex issues, documenting standards and procedures, and contributing to long-term architecture and modernization efforts. Qualifications Strong PostgreSQL administration skills, including installation, configuration, performance tuning, and troubleshooting. Experience with database design and development, including schema modeling, indexing strategies, and query optimization. Proficiency in backup and recovery strategies, high availability, replication, and disaster recovery planning. Knowledge of Linux/UNIX environments, shell scripting, and integration with application stacks and tools. Understanding of database security best practices, access control, encryption, and compliance with institutional and federal requirements. Ability to document processes, create technical standards, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field; advanced degree or equivalent experience in complex, mission-critical environments is beneficial. Experience supporting research or government/DoD-related systems and familiarity with secure computing environments is a plus. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a commitment to continuous learning and inclusive teamwork.
