Staff / Senior Distributed Systems Engineer Remote (US & Canada) | Competitive Compensation + Meaningful Equity Some engineering jobs ask you to maintain systems. This one asks you to build the systems that everyone else depends on. We're partnering with a client , one of the fastest-growing data and AI companies in the industry, to find an exceptional Distributed Systems Engineer to join the team responsible for the core syncing platform powering hundreds of enterprise customers. This isn't a role for someone who simply deploys Kubernetes clusters or manages infrastructure. We're looking for engineers who understand how distributed systems work , why they scale, and how to build them properly from first principles. What you'll be working on You'll help design and build the distributed systems that move terabytes of customer data every day across a global multi-cloud platform. Projects include: Designing large-scale distributed backend systems Building and optimising high-throughput data synchronisation engines Developing real-time streaming capabilities using queues and event-driven architectures Scaling platforms through multiple orders of magnitude of growth Building low-latency infrastructure powering millions of requests Improving reliability, fault tolerance and performance across multi-region deployments Working directly with customers to solve complex scaling challenges If conversations around Kafka, distributed systems, system design, performance optimisation, event streaming, horizontal scaling and backend architecture genuinely excite you, we'd love to talk. What we're looking for You'll have: 7+ years building backend software at scale Outstanding systems design fundamentals Experience building distributed systems rather than simply operating them Strong software engineering fundamentals and exceptional coding ability Experience with technologies such as Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, SQL and distributed messaging systems A track record of building systems from 0→1 before scaling them into production Have graduated from a top 30 CS program Experience in high-growth engineering organisations or venture-backed startups A passion for solving difficult engineering problems rather than simply delivering features We're particularly interested in engineers who've helped build products through rapid scaling, taking ownership of platforms processing significant volumes of data under real production load. Why engineers should join One of the most refreshing aspects of this opportunity is the engineering culture. The team operates with an outcomes-over-process mindset. That means: High autonomy and ownership Minimal meetings No micromanagement Flexible working hours Remote-first culture Excellent work-life balance Managers who remove blockers rather than create them A genuine focus on building software correctly the first time rather than constantly firefighting technical debt The engineering bar is exceptionally high, and you'll be surrounded by some of the strongest backend engineers in the industry while working on technically fascinating problems every day. Benefits Flexible PTO Quarterly Wellness Days Comprehensive health, dental, vision and life insurance Up to 16 weeks paid parental leave Professional development budget for conferences, books and learning $50/month connectivity allowance $50/month commuter benefit (office and eligible remote employees) Remote-first working with regular meetups and annual company offsite Competitive compensation and meaningful equity 401(k) (US employees) and retirement plans for international employees If you're an engineer who enjoys building systems that operate at scale and wants the freedom to solve hard problems alongside an exceptional team I'd love to hear from you. 📩 Apply directly or message me for a confidential conversation.
