Job Description Under direct Supervision of the Staff Veterinarian. Performs skilled work assisting the Veterinarian during clinical operation. Duties involve examining and observing the condition of animals held in the animal care centers. Position Duties The tasks below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional related tasks as necessary. Assist staff veterinarian in clinics. Provide animal care as directed. Fill prescriptions and administer medications and drugs to animals as directed. Provide support to staff veterinarian and animal care supervisor. Observes animals for signs of illness; reports findings to supervisor and/or veterinarian. Organizes veterinary appointments for sick or injured animals and recheck appointments. Maintains medical records and shelter data. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Become euthanasia certified and assist in performing euthanasia. Performs related work as assigned or required. Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years' experience working with a veterinarian; familiar with surgical procedures, medications, sterilization and anesthesia. Requires a minimum of six (6) months of experience in public contact work or as a kennel worker in an animal care facility. State Certified Veterinary Technician preferred. Requires Valid Florida Driver's License (must be maintained for duration of employment). This position requires successful completion of the Sheriff's Office pre-employment medical certification; must be able to restrain animals. Additional Information Work performed in an animal shelter. 8-hour shifts, Monday - Friday; flexibility may be required pending operational needs. Requires courage to work with animals that may bite, kick or scratch. Will have contact with inmate trustees from the Brevard County Jail. In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or manmade disaster that may threaten the area the employee will be expected to work. Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, reference/employment/neighborhood checks. submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to assuming position and will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.
