About The Role OpenAI is seeking a highly skilled Software Engineer specializing in Infrastructure Security to join its Security team. This role is pivotal in safeguarding OpenAI’s core research and production environments, including GPU supercomputing clusters, multi-cloud infrastructure, data centers, networking, storage, and critical services that support AI model training and deployment. As a Security Software Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain foundational security services such as authentication systems, secure proxies, access brokers, and key management platforms. These systems are essential for maintaining the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of OpenAI’s infrastructure, especially under high scalability and adversarial threats. The role involves close collaboration with infrastructure and research teams to embed security into high-performance compute environments, automate risk detection, and drive initiatives that elevate security standards across the organization. Your contributions will directly impact the resilience and trustworthiness of OpenAI’s AI systems, enabling rapid innovation while maintaining robust security protocols. Qualifications Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Rust, or C/C++ with a proven track record of shipping reliable distributed services Experience in building or operating critical security infrastructure including authentication services, service-to-service proxies, and key management systems Deep understanding of security principles, best practices, and common vulnerabilities Hands-on experience securing large-scale cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and multi-cloud network architectures Familiarity with container orchestration security, especially Kubernetes and service meshes Knowledge of modern authentication and authorization standards such as OIDC, mTLS, SPIFFE/SPIRE Proactive mindset with the ability to identify security gaps and implement automation and tooling solutions Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the capacity to assess security risks critically Excellent communication skills capable of conveying complex security concepts to diverse stakeholders Experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams to develop secure, scalable systems Responsibilities Design and implement production-grade security services, including authentication systems, access brokers, secure proxies, and key management platforms Collaborate with infrastructure and research teams to embed security measures into high-performance compute clusters and cloud environments Develop automation tools and detection mechanisms to continuously identify and mitigate security risks Lead or participate in design reviews, threat modeling, and security assessments for new systems and features Drive initiatives such as line-speed encryption, machine identity management, and network isolation to strengthen security posture Ensure security best practices are integrated throughout the development lifecycle and operational processes Maintain awareness of emerging security threats, vulnerabilities, and industry trends to proactively adapt security strategies Document security protocols, procedures, and incident response plans to ensure operational excellence Benefits Competitive salary range of $292,500 to $405,000 plus equity options Remote work flexibility within the US, including locations such as San Francisco, Seattle, and New York City Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans Generous paid time off and holidays to support work-life balance Opportunities for professional development and continuous learning Inclusive and collaborative work environment that values diversity and innovation Access to cutting-edge AI tools and resources to support your work and growth Equal Opportunity OpenAI is an equal opportunity employer.
