About the Role We are looking for a Distinguished Engineer to lead technical direction across GitLab's Core DevOps services, the systems the majority of our users touch every day. Distinguished Engineers are recognized experts across multiple technology domains and represent the most senior level of technical leadership within and across divisions at the company. Core DevOps builds continuous Integration, continuous deployment, planning, and source control experiences. These are among the most mature, highest traffic, and most deeply interconnected systems at GitLab. They carry years of accumulated architectural decisions, they sit in the critical path of our customers' own delivery pipelines, and they are being reshaped by the shift toward AI native development. The job is to raise their quality, converge them onto a coherent go-forward architecture, and retire accumulated risk, all without interrupting the millions of users and Fortune 100 organizations who depend on them. GitLab is pursuing a set of company-wide engineering goals: large gains in developer productivity, measurably higher quality in what we ship, and engineering practices reshaped around AI and agentic workflows. Core DevOps is where much of that strategy has to land, because these are the services our own engineers and our customers depend on daily. In this role you will bring that strategy into Core DevOps in a form that works for long lived production systems, and carry what you learn here back out to the rest of engineering. What You'll Do Set and continuously refine the go forward technical direction for CI, CD, Plan, and source code experiences, aligned against the horizontal architectural initiatives. Work directly with the VP of Engineering as her technical counterpart on planning, technical investment, and where the group's engineering effort should go. Translate GitLab's company-wide productivity, quality, and AI native engineering goals into concrete technical direction for Core DevOps, and turn into iterable roadmaps, partnering broadly across the org. Define what good means in measurable terms for these services, including availability, latency at p95 and p99, pipeline success rate, test reliability, data correctness, and defect escape rate, then hold designs and implementations to it. Maintain a clear and current picture of systemic technical risk across the group, including single points of failure, unowned critical paths, brittle coupling between CI/CD and Plan, scaling limits, and past decisions that now constrain the roadmap. Drive a prioritized plan to retire it. Lead the hardest design decisions hands on, writing code, prototypes, and proofs of concept where a design argument needs evidence behind it. Drive convergence on shared patterns, libraries, and paved paths, reducing how many different ways the same problem gets solved across the group. Design migration paths that let large, long lived systems change underneath users without breaking them, using incremental cutover, dual run, measurable rollback, and deprecation with clear timelines. Adopt the platform capabilities coming from GitLab's AI organization and the company's productivity initiatives into Core DevOps, feed this group's requirements back into them, and help prove what works on systems of this scale and maturity. Serve as the escalation point for complex or contested technical decisions across the group, including those where no single team owns the outcome. Review significant designs and merge requests in the group's critical paths, and use review to teach rather than only to gate. Ensure designs hold across GitLab.com, GitLab Dedicated, and Self-Managed deployments, and respect multi-tenant, compliance, and data governance boundaries in each. Partner with Infrastructure, Security, and SRE so Core DevOps services are observable and debuggable, and so failure modes degrade gracefully instead of cascading. Make architectural constraints and opportunities clear to Product in roadmap terms, so that technical investment and product ambition get planned together instead of traded off late. Write clear, opinionated design documents, architecture narratives, and decision records that let teams across the group make aligned decisions independently. Grow Principal and Staff Engineers across Core DevOps, raise the bar on design rigor and technical writing, and contribute to the technical hiring bar for senior individual contributors. Participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation to help meet availability goals for GitLab.com, and complete Interview Training to participate in hiring as a technical interviewer or panel member. What You'll Bring 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years in a Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior technical leadership role. Deep expertise in AI and ML systems, including large language models, agentic frameworks, and autonomous workflow design at production scale. Proven track record of leading hands-on technical experimentation, including defining evaluation frameworks, running benchmarks, and translating findings into scalable architecture decisions. Strong background in scalable, multi-tenant distributed systems, including service decomposition, fault tolerance, observability, and operational resilience. Experience designing and implementing human-in-the-loop controls, safety guardrails, and responsible AI practices for production systems. Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical direction across multiple teams or divisions without direct authority. About JetBrains Air JetBrains has been building developer tools since 2000 — including IntelliJ IDEA, Kotlin, TeamCity, and more, now trusted by 15M+ developers at 287K companies worldwide. The company is 100% private, profitable, and driven by a single thesis: great tools make developers better. Air is what JetBrains is building next: an agentic development environment where multiple AI agents run tasks in parallel while the developer stays in control. It's a genuinely new kind of developer tool — spanning a native desktop app, an expanding web experience, and cloud-based automations. It's the next frontier after IDEs: not just helping developers write code, but helping them orchestrate it. The Air design team is two people now — and you'd be the third. Your primary focus will be the web surface and the automations sub-team : an emerging part of the product that is ready for dedicated design ownership, with a real opportunity to raise the bar and shape the experience from the ground up. What you'll be working on Design the web interface for Air: team management, automation setup, and a results overview Shape the design process for the automations sub-team, working directly with developers to establish review and handoff practices You decide what gets built. You turn a vague product direction into scope, a plan and a shipped surface, and you say no to the rest. Own how the design system evolves across web and desktop: what belongs in it, what stays local, how two surfaces stay one product. Vibe-code and use AI for prototyping when it helps move ideas forward faster Participate in cross-team demos and quarterly planning, bringing a design perspective to where Air should go next What you need 7+ years of product design experience, with great examples of delivering results that impact the business. Ownership instinct. You see features through from design to production. Delivery is part of your definition of done. Excellent cross-team project delivery. You can work with limited context, clarify what matters, define the scope, and move projects forward across teams without needing constant hand-holding. Active AI user. You use AI tools in your design workflow. You've experimented with building or prototyping with Cursor, Claude, or similar. This market moves weekly; you should too. Solid Figma skills. Proficient with components, tokens/variables, and design systems — you can navigate an existing UI kit, understand how it works, and contribute new components as the product grows. Nice to have: Experience with developer-focused products or technical tooling (IDEs, dashboards, data tools) Experience with vibe-coding, design engineering, or code-level prototypes Familiarity with agentic or AI-native interface patterns — trust signals, human-in-the-loop, error handling at scale What you get Rare product scope. Work on a product that could define the next generation of developer tooling — small team, direct impact, decisions that ship fast. JetBrains' culture. Engineering-first, quality-focused, 100% private. No VC pressure, no artificial growth targets. Competitive compensation and benefits — location-dependent, with a full breakdown available on request. Role: Senior Product Designer Company: SimpleStudy Location: Remote, Europe (preferably Western / continental); relocation to Lisbon possible Job Type: Full-time About SimpleStudy SimpleStudy is an AI exam prep platform that students find and choose for themselves. In some numbers: 1.5M+ students across the UK, Ireland, Brazil, South Africa, and Australia 40–50k new students every week Web, mobile, and desktop apps $4M seed round with investors from Strava, OpenAI, and Meta The traction came fast. Now the company is refounding: rebuilding the brand, the design language, and the product experience from scratch. The product grew like a Jenga tower, one feature on top of another. The job now is to rebuild it as a pyramid. The team is ~30 people, remote with a Lisbon office — lean, product-led, and deliberately not a typical edtech company. You'll report to José, the Founding Designer, and work with him as a partner. José tends to lead early framing and direction. You bring strong craft and take the work to the finish line, in close sync with engineering. You both shape the new design language, and you push back with a better idea when you see one. What you are expected to do: Shape the new design language and brand: design system, rebrand, and the new mobile app. Own the full design process — from an ambiguous problem to a polished, shipped solution. Drive the consumer experience: onboarding, social features, retention, and the learning loop. Work in close sync with engineers and PM, not as a handoff step - polish the implementation together until it feels right. Bring your own initiatives and say "no, but…" when you see a better way. Raise the bar for the whole design team. What you need to succeed: High craft — your visual work is polished and intentional; the details reveal your thinking. Storytelling over process — you take an ambiguous problem, frame it, and make it simple. Your portfolio shows artifacts, not diagrams; it has a point of view. Consumer instinct — you've shipped B2C products that people chose to use. You understand product metrics and use them as input, but you lead with feel and craft. Opinions with backbone — you have a design philosophy, can defend it under pushback, and bring your own initiatives. You don't wait to be told what to build. Energy and curiosity — you're an interesting person with a life outside work, and you leave people energised after a conversation. English — fluent, written and spoken. What would be a plus: A standout specialty: prototyping, illustration, animation, or motion. Experience with social or viral product mechanics. Background at consumer companies like Spotify or Strava. Early-stage or founding designer experience. Comfortable in code: prototyping or polishing the front end. What you get: Build from scratch, at scale — a new design language for a product already used by 1.5M+ students. A strong partner - work closely with José, the Founding Designer (ex-Shopify), with direct access to the founders. Equity — generous stock options, early enough for them to matter. Remote Europe — work from where you choose, with in-person meetups three times a year; relocation support if you want to move to Lisbon. Competitive salary — no fixed budget, flexible. How to apply: A deck or a walkthrough video is fine. Show the work, keep it curated. Please email links to your LinkedIn / Resume and portfolio to The vacancy is proudly presented by the hirehire recruiting agency. "Craft matters here from day one. You'll rebuild the brand, the design system and the product together with José, a founding designer who cares a lot about how things feel. 1.5M students, real traction, and a team that picks quality over speed." — Tanya Sivo Product Design Expert, hirehire Find Jobs in France on Arbeitnow
