About the Team OpenAI's Applied AI Engineering team helps organizations turn frontier AI capabilities into safe, reliable, and high-impact production systems. We work with customer executives, product and engineering teams, security leaders, and transformation teams to identify valuable opportunities, accelerate technical implementation, and scale what works. Production-ready deployments are defined by complexity rather than any one industry: existing architectures, diverse data environments, security and governance requirements, multiple stakeholder groups, and organization-wide change. We turn lessons from these deployments into better products and reusable patterns for customers everywhere. About the Role As an Applied AI Engineer you will partner directly with leading organizations to design, build, and deploy AI systems that deliver measurable business outcomes. You will combine deep technical judgment, hands-on engineering, and customer leadership to take ambitious ideas from use-case selection and architecture through prototyping, evaluation, production launch, and scale. You will write and debug code, build evaluation systems, resolve complex integrations, and guide decisions involving model behavior, reliability, latency, cost, safety, security, governance, and operational readiness. Success is measured by production systems, sustained adoption, and meaningful customer impact—not simply activity or successful demonstrations. This is a rare opportunity to work on consequential real-world deployments at the frontier of AI while directly influencing how OpenAI's products evolve. This role is based in Paris. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees In this role, you will: Partner directly with enterprise and digital native customers to identify high-value opportunities and translate them into technical architectures, implementation plans, evaluation strategies, and measurable success criteria. Design, build, and deploy AI systems that solve important customer problems and produce measurable business outcomes. Work hands-on in code to build prototypes, evaluation harnesses, reference implementations, integrations, and production accelerators. Make sound technical decisions across models, agents, retrieval, tools, data, reliability, observability, latency, cost, safety, security, and governance. Diagnose complex implementation challenges, reproduce failures, test hypotheses, and drive blockers toward resolution. Help customers progress from promising prototypes to reliable production systems, sustained adoption, and scaled impact. Partner closely with customer engineering teams and OpenAI Product, Research, Engineering, Security, and go-to-market teams, translating deployment experience into high-signal product feedback. Create reusable architectures, tooling, playbooks, and technical guidance that accelerate future enterprise deployments. You might thrive in this role if you: Have a demonstrated track record of designing, building, and delivering AI or machine-learning systems in enterprise environments, including taking systems from prototype to production. Relevant backgrounds may include applied AI or ML engineering, forward-deployed engineering, software engineering, customer engineering, solutions architecture, product engineering or technical consulting. Are fluent in both French and English Can point to substantial personal contributions in code, architecture, evaluation, debugging, or engineering of production systems—not only program or stakeholder management. Are highly proficient in Python and comfortable working across an AI application stack; experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, or another relevant language is valuable. Understand how to evaluate AI systems systematically using representative data, graders, production signals, and human judgment. Have navigated enterprise production requirements such as integrations, reliability, observability, security, privacy, data governance, performance, and cost. Can connect technical decisions to customer workflows, adoption, and measurable business outcomes. Communicate with clarity and credibility across hands-on engineers, technical leaders, security teams, product leaders, and executives. Bring high agency, strong technical judgment, and end-to-end ownership in ambiguous environments. Learn quickly, challenge assumptions constructively, and collaborate with humility; experience in a particular industry or with OpenAI products is not required. Our software moves energy usage to times when electricity is cheap and green, by controlling vehicle charging, heating systems, and home batteries. We control hundreds of thousands of energy assets. We're building in a legacy industry and moving gigawatt-hours of electrons in the real world, but we operate at lightning speed, and we're growing the team to meet customer demand. We're proud to be supported by world-leading investors, including Energize Capital and Accel. Read more about what we're building here . About the role Software Engineers at Axle build the core infrastructure for connecting to distributed energy devices, orchestrating them, and allowing them to participate in electricity markets. This is a generalist Software Engineering role, encompassing product-engineering, devops, and data engineering. We encourage engineers to own as much of the problem-space as they can: you'll spend time talking to clients, getting feedback from users, and working closely with market operators. At Axle, we work in a deliberately flat structure. That means fewer layers, faster decisions, and more ownership for everyone. Software engineering at Axle looks like Forming a deep understanding of the domain & the business, so you have enough context to execute independently at speed Focusing on outcomes, not process, and taking ownership for the end product you ship into the world Managing your own time and those of others to adapt to changing scope and deadlines, delivering 80% of the value in 20% of the time Tech stack 🐍 We build in Python + React for the frontend 🐋 Everything we build lives in Docker, for minimal cross-platform faff and maximal reproducibility. 🤖 Unlimited Claude Code tokens - we are aggressive users and explorers of AI, and encourage everybody to reconsider their workflows regularly ☁️ We deploy on GCP What's in it for you A meaningful slice of equity in Axle, alongside a competitive salary, with total compensation ranging from £75k–£200k (base salary + equity). We operate with a deliberately flat structure and aim to keep pay equitable across the company, with a 1:1 median ratio between founder and team compensation. Enhanced parental leave to support you through life's meaningful moments. Bi-annual retreats to strengthen team connection & shared purpose. Hybrid working - We have a dog-friendly office around Farringdon. To maximize collaboration, we ask that you spend 2-3 days a week in the office. The opportunity to directly shape the future of energy markets and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world. We are extremely keen to build a diverse company, and we're particularly eager to hear from candidates who don't fit the traditional role stereotypes. If you're motivated by our mission, please do reach out, even if you feel you might not 'check all the boxes'. Before the detail, here's the challenge you'd help us solve. We build the embodied intelligence that moves real vehicles safely, and the ecosystem a billion machines will run on in the future. Very few people in AI can say this. Every role here, whatever the team, plugs into that. Here's what this particular role covers. 🛠️ About our Map & Route Team Our Map & Route team sits within Wayve's Automotive Platforms division in Vehicle Software Engineering, and builds the geospatial foundations behind our AI driver. Working with global-scale data, the team turns road-network and navigation data into reliable products used across Wayve, building geospatial services and data products to support company operations. We work with our model development, experimentation, and evaluation platforms to build an AI driver that uses maps and navigation data like an expert human driver by using map information to enhance training and evaluation of performance. We are a full-stack team owning mapping end to end, getting to touch work that is infrastructure, data engineering, data science, backend and frontend. 🧠 Your day-to-day Write full-stack services in Python and Typescript, creating novel geospatial services to solve challenging and unique problems we face in building our AI driving products. Collaborate with internal teams to understand requirements and build solutions with global geospatial data. Design and build data pipelines with PySpark and Databricks to enrich fleet data with mapping and road-network information at global scale. Build applications and datasets that support route planning and the preparation of map data for training and simulation. Integrate with navigation and mapping APIs from providers such as Mapbox, TomTom and Google Maps. Maintain, support and improve the services the team already runs. Deploy and operate your services on Azure and Kubernetes, owning them end to end. 🧩 What you'll be working on Global-scale geospatial enrichment pipelines that tell us where we've driven and what the road network looks like. Route-planning applications and datasets that help our teams decide where to drive next. Map data preparation for model training and simulation. New services you'll take from idea to production and lead end to end. 🙌 You should apply if You are a strong, hands-on Python engineer who can deliver high-quality production code at pace. You are comfortable with an AI-assisted or AI engineering workflow (ideation, planning, implementation and review). You have built and operated large-scale data pipelines using Spark or PySpark. You are comfortable writing SQL to query and analyse large datasets. You have working knowledge of cloud infrastructure and container orchestration, ideally Azure and Kubernetes, and are happy to own deployment, monitoring, and observability of your services. You enjoy taking ownership of new services and seeing them through end to end. Experience with geospatial data processing, road-network data or routing engines (e.g. OpenStreetMap, TomTom, HERE or Overture data, PostGIS, navigation APIs) would be a strong advantage. Experience with Bazel or monorepo build systems is desirable but not mandatory. Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Flyte or Airflow would be a bonus. 🌱 Not ticking every box? That's totally okay! If you're passionate about autonomy and keen to learn, we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every requirement. More about Wayve: 🚀 Wayve is building the leading AI platform for autonomous driving. We are pioneering an end to end AI approach that enables vehicles to learn directly from real world experience, developing the ability to adapt, generalise and improve at scale. Instead of relying on hand coded rules or pre mapped environments, our AI Driver learns to drive by understanding the world around it. The result is technology that navigates complex urban environments with intelligence, precision and natural flow, unlocking meaningful advances in both safety and efficiency. We believe autonomy represents a once in a generation transformation in how people and goods move, comparable to the shift from horses to cars, and from human driven vehicles to intelligent machines. Our ambition is to make autonomy universal. Wayve's mapless and hardware agnostic AI platform integrates with global OEM partners, enabling continuous software evolution and unlocking advanced levels of automation from L2 plus through to L4 as our core AI model scales. In a race increasingly defined by intelligence and real world learning, Wayve is taking a distinct approach, building a generalisable driving intelligence that can power any vehicle, anywhere. By combining embodied AI with scalable deployment, we are creating technology that can be shaped to each OEM brand and driver experience, accelerating the transition to a safer, more intelligent future of mobility. Wayve is not a mature, fully-structured place with the playbook already written. Much of how we work is still being written, and if you join, you'll help write it. That suits people who want real ownership more than people who need a settled structure from day one. If that sounds like the kind of problem you want to spend your time on, we'd really like to hear from you. At Wayve we're committed to creating a diverse, fair and respectful culture that is inclusive of everyone based on their unique skills and perspectives, and regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, pregnancy or related condition (including breastfeeding) or any other basis as protected by applicable law. 🛠️ About our Engineering Teams Robot Software builds the on-vehicle software platform that Wayve's AI Driver runs on. Within it, the Experiment Platform team owns the systems that let our researchers develop driving models on the road: deploying models to vehicles, running experiments, and collecting the data that trains the next model. The team builds a portable development platform that connects to partner vehicles and brings Wayve's model development capabilities to them, including data collection, experiment control, telemetry and over-the-air updates. It is used across our own fleet and on pre-production vehicles with OEM partners in Europe and Japan, and is central to how Wayve adapts its AI Driver to new vehicles. You will lead a team of engineers based in London, working alongside the Runtime Platform, OS, Sensors and Platform Integration teams in Robot Software. 🧠 Your day-to-day You will lead the team's people, plans and partnerships. Most of your time goes to your engineers: regular 1:1s, clear expectations, feedback, performance and promotion cycles, and helping technical leads take on more scope. You will work with your tech leads on technical decisions, own the outcomes, and make sure the team responds well when issues come up in the field. You will maintain the team's mission, charter and twelve-month roadmap, turn them into quarterly and six-week plans, and keep delivery on track. You will be the team's main point of contact for partner engineering teams, programme managers, operations and OEM customers, and you will make it clear what the team owns. You will stay technically capable and aware of the team's work across the codebase. You will monitor the architecture, guide the team through technical blockers when needed, and engage with technical leaders in other teams at a technical level. 🧩 What you'll be working on: Growing the platform: Take the development platform from its first stable release to a product used across many vehicle types, with predictable releases and validation in CI and on HIL benches. Experiment control and fleet orchestration: Own model and controller download, the robot state machine, and over-the-air deployment of software, configuration and calibration. Self-serve experimentation: Make the platform self-serve, so research teams can run their own experiments on vehicles without waiting for platform changes. Scaling data collection: Onboard and event-based logging, data quality, and data offload over New vehicles and OEM integrations: Deploy the full platform on Wayve's next-generation vehicles, and support new OEM integrations through configuration rather than new releases. Building the operating model around the platform: Releases, support rota, on-call, metrics and observability. Building the team: Own hiring and onboarding, and grow the team as adoption of the platform expands. 🙌 You should apply if: You have managed software engineering teams, including hiring, coaching and performance management. You have owned a platform or product that other teams or customers relied on, and shipped it to devices in the field. You are technically capable, with hands-on experience in embedded Linux systems software (C++ or Python), and stay close enough to the code to review your team's work, guide architecture and help resolve technical blockers. You understand connected device fleets, such as vehicles, robots or IoT, including data logging and offload, over-the-air updates and observability. You are comfortable leading delivery across many stakeholders, including external partners, and can engage with other technical leaders as a technical peer. You care about operational reliability and release quality. Experience with autonomous vehicles or robotics, automotive ECUs (for example NVIDIA Jetson or DRIVE, QNX), Yocto, IPC middleware such as ROS 2 or DDS, or containerised workloads on embedded systems is desirable. 🌱 Not ticking every box? That's totally okay! If you're passionate about autonomy and keen to learn, we encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every requirement. Thank you for considering Tailscale. If this job description resonates with you, please apply. Frequently cited statistics show that people who identify with historically marginalized groups are likely to apply to jobs only if they meet 100% of the qualifications. We encourage you to help us break that statistic! About Tailscale Tailscale is making safe connection effortless by delivering software that makes it easy to securely interconnect people and their devices, no matter where they are. From hobbyists to multinational corporations, teams of every size use Tailscale each day to protect their networks, share access to internal tools, and more. We're building a future for the Internet that's easy, sensible, and safe, like it used to be. Founded in 2019 and fully distributed, we're backed by Accel, CRV, Insight, Heavybit, and Uncork Capital. About the Role We're seeking a talented and motivated full-time Software Engineer, AI Enablement to help Tailscale's engineering organization get the most out of AI-assisted development. You'll join a small, high-leverage team reporting to our co-founder, working alongside our first AI enablement engineer to build the tools, workflows, and practices that help every engineer at Tailscale build faster and more safely with AI. This is a foundational role — you'll have real latitude to shape what AI enablement means here as we scale, with direct visibility into how the whole engineering org adopts these tools. Key Responsibilities Partner with engineering leadership and Tailscale's technical staff to define and drive our internal AI-enablement roadmap. Work closely with the team building Aperture by Tailscale, our AI gateway used both internally and offered as a product. Build and iterate on the tools, workflows, and shared practices that help engineers get real value from coding agents — and evaluate new models and tools, making clear calls on what we adopt. Partner with engineering and non-engineering teams to find high-leverage opportunities to apply AI — this is a support function, so success means other teams shipping faster because of what you've built. Establish the guardrails, review practices, and documentation that make AI-generated code safe to ship, and act as the internal advocate who helps teams adopt good practices without mandating a single tool. Track adoption and measure the real impact of AI tooling on velocity and quality, and report back to leadership. What We Are Looking For 5+ years of professional software engineering experience Genuine, daily, hands-on fluency with modern AI coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, Pi, or similar) — real power-user experience, not occasional use Experience building and shipping internal tools or developer-facing automation Strong written and verbal communication and internal advocacy skills — comfortable teaching, writing, and influencing engineers at very different comfort levels with AI tooling A balanced approach — trying to get people to use AI effectively and safely where appropriate. We don't have an 'AI mandate'; we believe that if we make AI both easy to use and safe, people will choose to use it when appropriate. Comfort with ambiguity and self-directed prioritization on a small, still-forming team Product or systems thinking — able to identify and prioritize high-leverage opportunities, not just execute a pre-set roadmap Nice to Have Prior experience in developer experience, platform engineering, or internal tooling Experience evaluating or benchmarking LLMs and coding agents Experience with a systems language such as Go or Rust, in addition to Python Background in security or code-review practices — helpful for reasoning about AI/agent-generated code, though you don't need to be a security engineer Experience in developer relations, technical evangelism, or customer-facing developer advocacy — the same skills that make someone effective in external DevRel translate well to driving internal AI adoption Technical project management experience As a company, we strive to maintain fair and equitable compensation practices within our team across all roles and all levels. Tailscale's compensation package includes base salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits. The salary range displayed on each job posting represents the target range for a new hire's base salary. Individual offers may vary based on experience and skill set. UK Pay Range £128,770 — £178,540 GBP What We Offer An inclusive, flexible environment where you can be your authentic self. We recognize the impact of diverse voices and backgrounds on the growth of our people, product, and company. And that flexibility in how and when you work empowers our team to integrate work and life. A competitive total compensation package. This includes a base salary, an equity incentive plan and variable commission (for quota-based roles). Comprehensive group benefits with no waiting period. Take advantage of coverage for health, vision, dental, and more for you and your family! Remote first company —most of our teams work fully remotely. Enjoy a change of scenery wherever you can get wifi, participate in virtual and in-person social events, and leverage our corporate co-working program to visit WeWork (or other similar spaces near you). Some roles require in-office collaboration depending on team needs, which will be clearly noted in the job description. Employer-funded retirement contributions. Tailscale will match your retirement contributions dollar-for-dollar, up to a maximum annual employer contribution equal to 0.75% of your eligible compensation. Connect with other Tailscalars IRL. Attend our annual company retreat, participate in team off-sites, and collaborate in person with teammates across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. We support intentional in-person connection through team travel and distributed collaboration. Support for your personal and professional development. Grow your career thoughtfully with $1500 USD annually for professional development, or take advantage of mentorship, coaching, and internal promotion opportunities. Paid time off and a healthy work-life integration. Our flexible, paid time off program supports you for any situation life throws your way, whether moving homes or travelling the world! A build-your-own home office setup. You choose your own company-owned laptop (Mac or PC), receive a monthly home internet reimbursement, and $500 USD to customize your workstation to make it your own. Paid parental leave program . We care about your life outside of work and encourage new parents to take advantage of parental leave top-ups (20 weeks for birthing parents, 16 weeks for non-birthing parents). The role will be part of our Platform Engineering organisation. Your Impact In this role you will be building the internal product ecosystem that streamlines and curates our proprietary discovery workflows, which is critical for accelerating our mission to solve global challenges through next-generation materials. Your main focus initially will be partnering with our VP of Product to define and build the first generation of internal applications from scratch, ensuring they are not just functional but curated as high-quality products. Over time, you will likely get involved in scaling these systems to support increasingly complex interdisciplinary data flows and potentially external-facing interfaces as our "search engine" for materials evolves. What You Will Do Product Inception & Internal Tooling Lead the development of a suite of internal applications, treating them as first-class products with a focus on usability and long-term scalability. Collaborate closely with the VP of Product to translate high-level research needs into technical roadmaps and intuitive software solutions. Full-Stack Development & Platform Integration Design and build robust backend services in Python to interface with our core AI and research engines, integrating disparate workflows into a unified, high-performance internal platform. Partner with the Data Engineering team to ensure seamless ingestion and visualisation of complex datasets within internal applications. Develop clean, responsive UIs that enable researchers to interact with complex data effectively, maintaining a high bar for intuitiveness and reducing cognitive load for technical users. Interdisciplinary Collaboration Work closely with AI Researchers and Data Engineers to understand the nuances of their daily tasks and build tools that empower them. Collaborate with the broader engineering team to ensure internal tools align with our overall infrastructure and security standards. Must Have Skills and Qualifications: You have at least 4+ years of professional experience in full-stack software engineering, with a proven track record of building and maintaining production-grade applications. You possess strong backend expertise, specifically with Python and modern web frameworks (e.g. FastAPI, Django, or Flask). You are proficient with Node.js and modern frontend frameworks (e.g. React, Vue, or TypeScript) and have a keen eye for UI/UX best practices. You are a "builder" at heart who enjoys the greenfield stage of a project and is comfortable making architectural decisions from scratch. You have a product-focused mindset, meaning you don't just "write tickets" but actively think about how to make the user's life easier. You are excited by the prospect of enabling world-changing scientific discovery, even if you don't have a background in the sciences yourself. Bonus Points (But Not Critical): Experience working in an early-stage startup environment where you've had to wear multiple hats. Previous experience building internal tools, dashboards, or "Admin" interfaces for data-heavy companies. Knowledge of modern DevOps practices and cloud infrastructure (e.g. GCP, Docker, Kubernetes). An academic background or personal interest in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Sustainability. Additional Considerations This role could be based in our Cambridge, London, Amsterdam or Berlin offices, with the expectation of being in the office three days per week. Additionally, there may be regular travel required to other locations for collaboration and project work. What We Offer A competitive salary: We value and reward impact and growth Equity in CuspAI: You have a stake in the success of the company Time off to stay fresh: 28 days holiday (DE, NL, UK) or 21 days holiday (JP, SG, US), in addition to local public holidays 'Gold Standard' parental leave: 26 weeks (primary caregiver) and 12 weeks (secondary caregiver) at full pay - we look after you and your family while we work on the most important materials discovery problems together Professional development budget: We invest in your career development so you can stay up to date with the latest industry knowledge or add to your skills to increase impact and growth Solve meaningful problems: See how your work has a direct impact on advancing materials science and solving sustainability and climate-related problems through the creation and application of bleeding-edge SOTA technology and revolutionary techniques True interdisciplinary teamwork: Be part of a deeply collaborative environment bridging AI research, computational chemistry, and experimental science - work with world-class researchers and engineers who enjoy sharing knowledge and supporting each other Join us in shaping the future of materials with AI.
