The Role: Our growing team is looking for a senior software engineer to lead the evolution of the infrastructure that turns our science into trustworthy climate results. In this role, you'll own the platform that takes our data, models and estimation methods from R&D to auditable client deliverables, and you'll be a trusted reviewer and guide across software and data engineering. As a small team, you'll also shape how we build our geospatial pipelines and internal analytics. We're looking for someone who has designed and run data-intensive systems in production, makes sound architectural calls, and raises the bar for the engineers around them. You'll work closely with fellow software and data engineers, data scientists and solutions engineers, turning research code into robust, reproducible infrastructure. You will join a cross-functional, mission-driven team dedicated to bringing transparency and integrity to climate action. Impact you'll own: Shorten the path from experiment to production: own how models and estimation features move from research into reproducible, auditable client deliverables, with data, models and environments versioned end to end. Own our developer platform and engineering standards: environments, containers, project templates, CI/CD and pipeline orchestration across a multi-repo Python stack. Own our GCP infrastructure: architecture, infrastructure-as-code, monitoring, cost and access management, and its evolution as the company grows. Shape our geospatial workflows: how we store and process vector and high-resolution raster data at scale, and how the databases behind our models and deliverables evolve as we scale. Be the key reviewer for core and pipeline infra: write design docs for your own areas and review those of others, keeping our architecture coherent as the team grows. Raise the bar across engineering: mentor other engineers, and support our software & data engineering team with feedback and guidance on design and architecture. Over time, coordinate our infrastructure development goals: set priorities and align work across software and data engineering. What you bring: 6+ years of experience in engineering roles, including significant time designing and running data-intensive backend systems and pipelines in production A track record of owning systems end to end: you've made architectural decisions and lived with their consequences, written and reviewed design docs, and mentored other engineers Expert Python and strong SQL, with solid experience designing schemas and data models for production systems Hands-on experience with workflow and pipeline tooling (e.g. Airflow, Dagster), experiment tracking and data versioning Hands-on experience running production cloud infrastructure, ideally GCP; infrastructure-as-code (e.g. Terraform/OpenTofu), IAM, as well as containers and reproducible environments (e.g. Docker, devcontainers) Deep experience across the software development lifecycle (Python packaging, containers, testing strategies, CI/CD, observability) and opinions on how to do it well Clear, direct communication with both technical and non-technical colleagues, and strong motivation to contribute to sustainable development through technology A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience What makes you stand out: Production experience with raster data and geospatial pipelines Experience building model serving, model registries or other MLOps tooling (e.g. DVC, MLFlow) Experience building BI or dashboarding tooling (e.g. Streamlit) for non-technical users Experience with data warehouse design (e.g. BigQuery, PostgreSQL, dbt) and data engineering workflows Previous exposure to earth observation, environmental monitoring or soil science data Benefits you can expect: Real ownership and influence over technical direction at an early-stage company Be part of a highly motivated, committed, and international team working on one of society's biggest challenges: climate change Witness and shape the evolution of a new business being built An engineering culture built on designs docs, thoughtful code reviews and shared practices Remote-friendly: up to 4 days/week remote when based in Berlin, or fully remote from elsewhere in Germany, with flexible hours Drinks, snacks, team events, and your choice of hardware Find Jobs in Germany on Arbeitnow
We build fast, modern developer tools in Rust, and a surprising amount of serious software runs on them. Pixi, rattler and rattler-build are open source and used by hundreds of thousands of developers: quant teams in finance, physicists at CERN, biotech labs, and humanoid robot companies you've probably seen videos of. We are also core maintainers of conda-forge, one of the largest open source package ecosystems, and we maintain RoboStack, which gets ROS running on any OS from a single lockfile. When that much software flows through your tools, security stops being optional. Every package that ends up on a laptop, a server or a robot should be traceable back to the source and build that produced it. We're building that for conda today, and we want to extend it to AI models. The engineering team is spread across Europe (Netherlands, Germany, UK, Moldova). This work is based in Berlin, and so is this role. The work Robots increasingly run learned models: vision transformers, RL policies, LLMs. Today those models are usually copied onto machines as large opaque files, with little record of where they came from or what changed. We think models should be shipped like packages: versioned, signed, verifiable, and updated efficiently. You'll work on two related areas. Package security. Signing and verification for conda packages with Sigstore, provenance from source to build to install, SBOMs, and mapping known vulnerabilities onto the packages people actually use. This work goes into Pixi, rattler and conda-forge, and is used by a lot of people. AI models as packages. Taking the same ideas to model artifacts. That includes: A provenance chain from training through packaging to deployment, with signatures that can be verified offline on air-gapped robots A model SBOM format, building on CycloneDX's ML-BOM Delta updates between model versions (full models, fine-tunes, LoRA adapters, quantized variants), so robots don't download gigabytes for a small change Compression that combines model techniques (quantization, pruning, distillation) with what package managers already do well (zstd, content-addressable storage), tuned to the target hardware and network Managing models that get fine-tuned on the robot itself: tracking where those variants came from, validating them, and syncing them back Testing the whole pipeline end to end on real models and real hardware, and measuring latency, bandwidth and model quality A lot of this is new. Part of the job is figuring out which approaches work, measuring them honestly, and writing up what you found. What we're looking for You don't need years of experience. You do need solid fundamentals, curiosity, and the patience to get security details right. Rust, or a strong background in C++, Go or Python and the wish to switch Interest in software supply chain security. Bonus if you've worked with Sigstore (Cosign, Rekor, Fulcio), TUF, in-toto, SLSA or SBOM formats Familiarity with ML in practice: you've trained or fine-tuned a model, know what a LoRA adapter or a quantized model is, and have used PyTorch or similar Basic understanding of cryptography as an engineer: signatures, hashes, certificates, and what they do and don't guarantee You like measuring things and are honest about results that don't work out You live in Berlin or are willing to move here It's a plus if you know package managers from the inside, have worked on model compression or edge inference, have robotics experience, or have contributed to open source. None of this is required. What we offer You'll work on problems few people have solved yet, together with the people who created Mamba, Pixi, rattler and RoboStack. Most of your work will be open source and used by a large community from day one. We pay a competitive Berlin salary, with 30 days of vacation, the hardware you want, a conference budget, and time for upstream open source work. We help with relocation within the EU. We are seeking experienced native-speaking software engineers to design, build, and validate these benchmarks. You will create high-signal, high-quality tasks that genuinely test a model's ability to handle multilingual environments without relying on English translation crutches. Note this is a remote, freelance opportunity What You'll Deliver Task Engineering: Evaluating Coding Agents. Asset Creation: Build realistic task environments using datasets and files in your native language. Crucially, these assets must remain in the target language to genuinely measure multilingual handling. Prompting & Translation: finding failure points where AI does not work, in your native language Implementation & Verification: Support the development of robust solutions (reference implementations) and write highly reliable, deterministic verifier scripts (using rubric-based judging only when strictly necessary). Calibration & Execution: Analyze execution logs and calibrate task difficulty (Easy to Very Hard) using standard Terminal-Bench run configurations against various model tiers (Haiku, Sonnet, Opus). Quality Assurance: Participate in a rigorous, 4-layer human quality control process (creation, human review, calibration review, and audit) alongside automated LLM-based checks to ensure fairness, grammatical accuracy, and benchmark integrity. Qualifications Experience: 5+ years of industry experience in software engineering. Background: Proven track record at leading technology companies and/or graduation from top-tier engineering universities. Language: Native or near-native fluency, with a deep understanding of its grammar, register, and phrasing rules. High English proficiency. Technical Stack: Strong proficiency in Python, standard shell scripting, and data processing. Workflow: Extensive experience with Terminal/CLI-based development workflows and a working familiarity with coding agents. Domain Expertise: Deep technical understanding of multilingual text processing pitfalls, including: Encoding/decoding robustness and Unicode normalization. Locale-dependent conventions (collation, casing, non-Gregorian dates). Text I/O, toolchain interoperability, and safe string operations. (For specific languages) Bidirectional/RTL handling, font fallbacks, and rendering/typography in UI or artifacts. Why Collaborate with Lilt? Your schedule, your rules.
