InternshipHybridMid$31,200 - $31,200 / Year

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states. The Perception team builds the system which learns the spatial-temporal representation and their semantic meanings of the surrounding environment of the self-driving car, i.e., the system that "perceives" the world around the car. We work jointly with downstream teams on the optimization and integration into the Waymo Driver. We conduct our own research to address real-world problems and collaborate with research teams at Alphabet.  We have access to millions of miles of driving data from a diverse set of sensors, enabling engineers like you to (1) develop methods for efficiently and continuously learning from large scale real-world data, to (2) develop models and model training at scale, to (3) analyze real-world behavior and develop systems for handling the complexities of interacting with the real-world, and (4) optimize models for our onboard and offboard hardware.  The core challenge within Model Lifecycle is accelerating Waymo's ML development cycle. As we scale to new cities and vehicle platforms, our data volume is exploding, and our models are becoming more complex, handling more and more tasks. This team is critical to controlling that complexity. Waymo interns work with leaders in the industry on projects that deliver significant impact to the company. We believe learning is a two-way street: applying your knowledge while providing you with opportunities to expand your skillset. Interns are an important part of our culture and our recruiting pipeline. Join us at Waymo for a fun and rewarding internship! This internship will be based on-site at our headquarters in Mountain View, CA. You Will: Own an end-to-end ML project: form a hypothesis, build the dataset, train and evaluate models, and analyze the results. Design and run experiments that measure how training data choices (curation, mining, balancing, labeling) affect Perception model quality. Build and refine datasets from large-scale multi-sensor driving data (camera, lidar, radar). Train and evaluate Perception models with Waymo's existing training and evaluation tooling. Develop metrics and analyses that explain where models fail and which data would fix those failures. Share findings with ML engineers and research scientists, and help land the results in production model training. You Have: Currently enrolled in an MS or PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related field. Hands-on experience training and evaluating deep learning models in JAX, PyTorch, or TensorFlow. Hands-on experience with the data side of ML, such as building datasets, data curation, labeling, or data quality analysis. Strong programming skills in Python. Ability to design controlled experiments and draw sound conclusions from quantitative results. We Prefer: Experience on an end-to-end ML project where you owned both the data and the model. Research or industry experience in data-centric ML, such as data selection, active learning, data valuation, or curriculum learning. Experience with perception tasks such as 3D detection, tracking, segmentation, or multimodal (camera and lidar) models. Experience processing large datasets with distributed tools such as Apache Beam, Spark, or Dataflow. Publications at ML or computer vision venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV). Passion for data-centric AI and autonomous driving. Note: This will be a hybrid onsite internship position. We will accept resumes on a rolling basis until the role is filled. To be in consideration for multiple roles, you will need to apply to each one individually - please apply to the top 3 roles you are interested in. The expected hourly rate for this full-time position is listed below. Interns are also eligible to participate in the Company's generous benefits programs, subject to eligibility requirements. Hourly Masters Pay $70 — $70 USD The expected hourly rate for this full-time position is listed below. Interns are also eligible to participate in the Company's generous benefits programs, subject to eligibility requirements. Hourly PhD Pay $85 — $85 USD

About Us At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world's largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine's Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World's Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company. At Cloudflare, we're not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; we're looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a "normalized" problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you're the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you'll fit right in. About the Role We are looking for a Systems Engineer to help build and manage tools that help engineers deploy and operate the services that make Cloudflare work. Our mission is to provide a reliable and flexible platform to help product teams release new software efficiently and safely. The role includes both software engineering and operational responsibilities. Responsibilities Design and build scalable and resilient systems that can keep up with company growth. Design and build developer productivity tooling. Harden the platform against security threats and resource contention issues. Improve our development systems and practices. Experience managing containerized workloads at scale using Kubernetes, Docker, or similar orchestration platforms. Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing strategies for infrastructure. Source control experience including branching, merging and rebasing. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with a methodical approach to diagnosing complex system-level failures. Bonus Points Experience with configuration management and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Ansible, Terraform, SaltStack). Deep understanding of Linux/Unix operating system internals (e.g., storage subsystems, memory management) and core networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS). Contributions to open-source systems software projects or active participation in the broader systems engineering community. What Makes Cloudflare Special? We're not just a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company. We're a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company with a soul. Fundamental to our mission to help build a better Internet is protecting the free and open Internet. Project Galileo : Since 2014, we've equipped more than 2,400 journalism and civil society organizations in 111 countries with powerful tools to defend themselves against attacks that would otherwise censor their work, technology already used by Cloudflare's enterprise customers--at no cost. Athenian Project : In 2017, we created the Athenian Project to ensure that state and local governments have the highest level of protection and reliability for free, so that their constituents have access to election information and voter registration. Since the project, we've provided services to more than 425 local government election websites in 33 states. 1.1.1.1 : We released 1.1.1.1 to help fix the foundation of the Internet by building a faster, more secure and privacy-centric public DNS resolver. This is available publicly for everyone to use - it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released. Here's the deal - we don't store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers. Sound like something you'd like to be a part of? We'd love to hear from you!
