Senior Database Engineer
Spreedly
SpreedlyUSA (Fully Remote)29 days ago
Full TimeFully RemoteSenior

About Us: Spreedly is the Intelligent Payments Platform for businesses that want to own their payments strategy. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Durham, NC, we give merchants, platforms, and fintechs a single API to connect to 150+ payment gateways and 40+ payment methods across 100+ countries, along with the intelligence to decide where every transaction should go. We're vendor-agnostic by design. Our customers choose their providers, keep their payment data portable, and never have to rebuild their stack to adopt something new. Payments are getting more complex, not less. Every new market, payment method, fraud tool, and now every AI agent checking out on a shopper's behalf adds another integration and another decision. Spreedly turns that complexity into an advantage. Our PCI Level 1 vault keeps cards and network tokens portable across providers. Smart routing and retries recover revenue lost to avoidable declines. Fraud and 3DS tools plug in with a single API call. And our payments intelligence turns transaction data into decisions merchants can act on. As agentic commerce moves from experiment to real sales channel, we're building the infrastructure that lets merchants accept agent-initiated payments through the providers they already trust. For the people who work here, that means hard technical problems at real scale, billions of dollars in annual transactions, at a moment when the rules of commerce are being rewritten. If you want ownership and work that shows up directly in your customers' revenue, you'll fit right in. About the Role Spreedly is hiring a Senior Database Engineer to become the go-to database expert on our Reliability team. You'll improve the performance and reliability of our existing distributed database environment and help engineering teams make database changes safely. This is a senior individual contributor role with no direct reports, and "senior" here means more than years of experience: you'll be the person the rest of engineering looks to on anything at the database layer. The opportunity is to shape how we manage and improve our databases, not to lead a migration. We already run CockroachDB, with infrastructure operated through Cockroach Labs' managed service. That means your focus is the part that's ours to own: workload, schema, queries, settings, capacity, and the practices around change. Our Reliability team works across application engineering, infrastructure, and platform to improve monitoring, prevent incidents, and recover quickly when incidents happen. It isn't a textbook SRE team. It's a small, highly autonomous group focused on continuous improvement, with real room to see a problem, propose a fix, and carry it through within the team's priorities. Database availability and performance matter a great deal in a payments environment, and the improvements you make here show up directly in the reliability our customers depend on. Responsibilities: Responsibilities Improve database performance Investigate our current database setup to find performance bottlenecks and reliability risks, using instrumentation, code review, and staging tests where appropriate. Find and improve slow-running queries, identify missing or inefficient indexes, and evaluate database settings against what the application actually needs. Diagnose distributed-database issues such as transaction contention and retries, hot ranges, and inefficient access patterns, and partner with application engineers to fix them at the source. Establish performance baselines so meaningful changes in workload behavior are visible early. Be the database subject-matter expert Help engineering teams understand the risks and trade-offs of significant changes before they reach production, including schema migrations, new access patterns, and configuration changes. Participate in design reviews for systems that place significant demands on the database, and give clear guidance on schema design, primary key selection, indexing, and transaction boundaries. Contribute database expertise to incident response and root-cause analysis, and turn what we learn into lasting fixes. Own database practices Develop safer migration procedures, documentation, and guidance so application teams can evolve data models without needing you involved in every step. Take ongoing ownership of operational practices, including planning version upgrades, validating backup and recovery against our availability objectives, and keeping cluster settings and sizing right for our workload. Improve database observability so the signals that matter (latency, retries, contention, range health, capacity) are visible and actionable alongside our broader production monitoring. Work with Cockroach Labs as a knowledgeable counterpart on our managed environment, and help us right-size our database footprint as we grow. Partner across engineering Work closely with infrastructure, platform, and application engineers to improve database performance and availability. Mentor engineers on database troubleshooting, performance, and distributed-database concepts. Requirements: 5+ years of experience in a role where operating and optimizing production databases was your primary job, not a side responsibility of application development. Deep, hands-on experience managing distributed databases, including their performance and high-availability behavior. Hands-on experience managing relational databases supporting business-critical production systems. A track record of diagnosing database inefficiencies and delivering measurable improvements to queries, indexing, schema, or configuration. Strong SQL skills and fluency with execution plans, transaction management, and the trade-offs of distributed SQL (replication, consistency, consensus, distributed transactions). The ability to assess the risk of a database change and explain technical trade-offs clearly to other engineers. An independent approach to investigating unfamiliar systems, identifying priorities, and carrying improvements through to completion. A considerate, collaborative working style with teams whose work depends on yours, and whose expertise you depend on. Additional Skills We Value: Production experience administering CockroachDB at meaningful transaction volumes, including diagnosing contention, transaction retries, and hot ranges. PostgreSQL administration experience. Experience operating a managed database service and working effectively with the vendor's support and engineering teams. Experience with zero- or minimal-downtime schema migrations on large, high-traffic tables. Experience supporting payments, financial technology, or similarly availability-sensitive platforms. Experience with database capacity planning and cluster sizing, including multi-region topologies. Experience building operational tooling or checks in Python, Go, or similar languages. Familiarity with how ORMs (for example, Rails ActiveRecord) shape database access patterns. Cloud experience on AWS or Azure; database-focused cloud certifications are a plus. Neither CockroachDB nor PostgreSQL experience is a prerequisite if you bring the depth of distributed database management experience this role needs. We Offer Our US-Based Employees: Competitive salary + Equity Outstanding Medical and Dental benefits, including 100% employer-paid option Company-paid Life and Disability insurance Optional vision and supplemental insurance options, and various Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) Open Paid Time Off policy + 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents Matching 401(k) plan (5% up to $5,000 yearly) $1,000 annual professional development stipend Monthly home working/digital lifestyle stipend, new MacBook, and one-time accessory reimbursement Access to company-paid professional coaching service Visits to HQ in Durham, North Carolina for remote employees Compensation Additional Information Spreedly Product Offering: Spreedly provides an open payments platform. The platform's connectivity provides payments performance. Key products and services include: Connect — A unified API that integrates with hundreds of payment gateways, processors, and alternative payment methods worldwide, including digital wallets. Merchants access the global payments ecosystem through one connection. Vault — A PCI-compliant secure repository for payment methods. Merchants store card data once and reuse it across any payment service, reducing PCI scope and protecting cardholder data at scale. Optimize — Workflow-driven routing and retry logic that directs each transaction to the best-performing gateway in real time. On average, 7.9% of failed transactions succeed immediately when retried on a secondary gateway. This is where merchants recover lost revenue and increase authorization success rates. Protect — A flexible fraud and authentication layer, incorporating advanced fraud tools and 3DS. Following Spreedly's acquisition of Dodgeball in September 2025, fraud orchestration and payment optimization now operate within the same platform. Resolve — Centralized management and reporting that reduces operational silos, strengthens security, and improves billing control across a merchant's entire payment operation. More Coming Soon! - Keep your eyes peeled for a new product launch by EOY '26 -- What It's Like to Work Here: We describe our team as "Spreedlings": diverse, forward-thinking, and driven by a shared belief that a more open payments ecosystem benefits everyone. The company operates with a culture built on transparency, courageous collaboration, and self-driven leadership. The team values simplicity in both product and process, and approaches problem-solving with genuine curiosity. -- We champion the ethical, creative use of AI—if you're someone who pairs human judgment with modern AI tools to work smarter and drive bigger impact, you'll thrive here. -- Spreedly is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. We actively work to drive out even unintentional discrimination in our hiring processes via practices like blindly graded work samples, structured interviews, and diversity awareness training. Due to the sensitive nature of what Spreedly does - handling payment data - finalist candidates must complete a successful background and reference check. At this time Spreedly is unable to provide sponsorship for employment, and we are not set up to support remote employees who reside in New York. In order to be considered for employment, applicants must be currently legally authorized to work in the job location country and not require future sponsorship in order to continue working in that country. We appreciate your interest in our company. Because of the high volume of resume flow, we may only respond to those candidates that we think will be a potential fit. -- #LI-AE1

Software Engineer, Staff: Applied AI, Science & Engineering
AnthropicSan Francisco, United States (Hybrid)29 days ago
InternshipHybridMid$405,000 - $405,000 / Year
rmachine learningconcretemechanical engineeringmanufacturingsales+7

About Anthropic Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About the role At Anthropic, we're building AI systems that are safe, beneficial, and transformative. Our mission is to develop AI that benefits humanity, and we believe the most powerful capabilities emerge when we thoughtfully bridge the gap between research breakthroughs and real-world applications. Claude is getting good at research. Given a well-posed problem, it can read the literature, write and run simulations, analyze results, and iterate on a design across physics, materials, chemistry, and engineering. But most of the hardest problems in science and engineering aren't well-posed. They live inside companies and labs with their own data, tools, constraints, and experts, and progress depends on turning all of that into work a model can actually do and check. Our Applied AI, Science & Engineering team takes Claude to the scientists and engineers working on hard problems in energy, materials, hardware design, and other physical-world fields. We build the tools  Claude needs to do real research and engineering work. Mostly that means software: the agent harnesses, integrations, evaluations, and working processes that turn a partner's problem into something Claude can make progress on and validate. We find real-world problems and test what we build through partner engagements, then feed our learnings back to our research and product teams. It's early, and the engineers who join now will shape how Claude gets applied to science and engineering. This is an engineering role first. You'll spend real time with domain experts, become the person who knows how to get Claude working in their field, and prototype quickly alongside them. Most of your time, though, goes into building and hardening the systems that make that work repeatable, not into writing recommendations or configuring someone else's product. A science or engineering background is a big plus, but what matters most is that you can earn the trust of expert researchers, turn a fuzzy problem into something concrete and checkable, and ship. Responsibilities Build the agent harnesses and research loops that let Claude carry a problem from literature review through hypothesis generation, simulation, analysis, and design iteration Connect scientific computing and simulation tools (finite element, CFD, electromagnetic, or molecular modeling codes, for example) so Claude can drive them reliably and at scale Design and build evaluations that tell us whether Claude's work is actually right, and be honest about where it isn't Sit with scientists and engineers at partner organizations to learn their problem, data, tools, and constraints, and turn open-ended questions into well-specified, verifiable tasks with clear success criteria Prototype with partners, ship pilots into their workflows, and cut anything that doesn't move the problem forward Turn what works in one engagement into shared tools, reusable components, and documented processes the next one can start from Be the technical voice on how Claude performs on science and engineering work, explaining results, limits, and tradeoffs clearly to researchers, engineering leads, and non-technical stakeholders alike Partner with our research and product teams to share where models fall short on science and engineering work, and help shape what comes next You may be a good fit if you Have 8+ years of experience building software, with strong engineering fundamentals and comfort across the stack, from data pipelines to tooling to quick interfaces Have built real systems with large language models, including agents, tool use, or evaluations Have worked on technical problems in a science or engineering field, such as physics, materials, chemistry, or electrical or mechanical engineering Have a track record of zero-to-one work in startup or startup-like environments\ Can work directly with expert users, understand their workflows deeply, and still keep the focus on building the right system rather than the one first requested Have good judgment about what can and can't be verified, and are comfortable saying a result isn't good enough yet Bring high agency, pick up new domains quickly, and hold strong opinions loosely Communicate clearly with researchers, engineers, and external partners, and care about the societal impacts of your work Strong candidates may also have An advanced degree or research experience in a physical science or engineering field Hands-on experience with scientific computing and simulation, numerical methods, or optimization Experience in industrial R&D, a national lab, or a deep-tech company in areas like energy, materials, manufacturing, or hardware Experience building alongside customers or technical partners, for example in forward-deployed, applied AI, or solutions engineering roles, ideally where you also owned the software that came out of it Experience with ML research, RL environments, or evaluation design Candidates need not have 100% of the skills listed above Formal certifications or education credentials Expertise in every scientific domain we work in Direct machine learning or AI research experience Deadline to apply: None. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.  For sales roles, the range provided is the role's On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $405,000 — $485,000 USD Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study:  A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices. Visa sponsorship:  We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed.  Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team. Your safety matters to us. To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit  anthropic.com/careers  directly for confirmed position openings. How we're different We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences. Come work with us! Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues. concreteregulatory affairssalesrecruitinglogisticsresearch+2

About the role We're seeking an experienced Policy Communications Manager to help drive external communications for our security, governance, and responsible scaling programs, and associated work. This role offers the opportunity to help shape how Anthropic communicates about our approach to developing secure AI systems and products, our work to uphold and iterate on our Responsible Scaling Policy framework, and the unique corporate structure that keeps the company accountable to its mission, including our Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT) and our status as a public benefit corporation. You'll partner closely with our security, product, legal, governance, and Responsible Scaling Policy (RSP) teams to communicate Anthropic's approach to building safe and secure AI models as the technology becomes increasingly capable across critical domains like cybersecurity. You'll also help lead communications about how Anthropic is governed: the role of the LTBT's independent trustees in overseeing the company and electing members of our board, the obligations that come with our public benefit corporation charter, and why we believe this structure matters as AI systems grow more powerful. As governments establish regulatory frameworks for frontier AI, you'll help articulate how Anthropic approaches its transparency obligations and public reporting commitments, translating evolving requirements into clear, credible external communications. This will include balancing proactive storytelling about product security updates and launches with thoughtful handling of reactive matters as they arise. We're charting new terrain communicating about fast-moving frontier model capabilities and threat surfaces, and about institutional structures few other companies have built. You'll bring strong communications fundamentals to the role but recognize that traditional approaches may not map cleanly to the novel issues we're tackling. The ideal candidate is an experienced issues handler with strong executive management skills, attention to detail, and the judgment to navigate sensitive topics with care. About the role New hires join Anthropic every week; their first days here shape how they understand our mission and culture, and help to accelerate their time to productivity. We're looking for a Program Manager to own the live delivery of our new hire onboarding program, so that every cohort, whatever its size or timing, gets an experience that is well run, welcoming, and grounded in what makes Anthropic distinctive. You'll own our San Francisco onboarding program end to end: facilitating sessions, overseeing the operating rhythm behind each cohort, and orchestrating across Recruiting, People Services, Workplace, IT, and the many presenters who bring the program to life. You'll work within our overall onboarding strategy and program design, and your job is to deliver our live onboarding program reliably, week after week, while spotting where the experience can get better and feeding those insights into how the program evolves. This role suits someone who loves the craft of running a great program: the preparation, the moments in the room, and the systems that make it all repeatable at scale. You'll do well here if you stay calm when plans change, care deeply about the details that shape a first impression, and bring warmth and clarity to a room of people on their first day. This role requires being in the office at least two days a week – on all programming days and as needed otherwise. Key responsibilities Own weekly program delivery: Run each onboarding cohort from pre-arrival readiness through program close, so every cohort gets a consistent, high-quality experience Facilitate live sessions: Serve as the primary facilitator and host for every cohort, setting the tone for new hires and keeping the program on time and on message Support presenters and facilitators: Brief and prepare the speakers, panelists, and backup facilitators who deliver program content, so sessions land well regardless of who is in the room; deliver feedback as needed and support content iteration Oversee cross-functional execution: Partner closely with the NHO coordinator to coordinate across Recruiting, People Services, Workplace, IT, and AV, so that start dates, device readiness, rooms, catering, and communications come together each week Set the weekly operating rhythm: Prioritize and sequence program logistics and coordination work each week, making sure nothing falls through the cracks Support improvements to the program's operating system: Partner closely with the NHO coordinator to improve run-of-show documents, checklists, playbooks, and automations that make the program repeatable, reduce single points of failure, and flex with variable cohort sizes Track program health: Monitor operational and experience metrics via new hire feedback, surface trends and friction points, and bring recommendations that inform program design and priorities Drive content improvement: Based on new hire feedback and company needs, work with facilitators and the broader onboarding team to iterate on and improve program content over time Plan ahead for what could change: Anticipate cohort size swings, holidays, space constraints, and last-minute changes, with contingency plans ready before they're needed Minimum qualifications Interest in Anthropic's mission and in helping new hires connect their work to it Extensive experience owning the end-to-end delivery of a recurring program, event series, or training program with many stakeholders Advanced experience facilitating or presenting to large groups, in person and virtually Strong project management skills, including building and running timelines, trackers, and checklists in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Calendar) or similar tools Working proficiency with Slack and Google Workspace Exceptional written and verbal communication, including communications for audiences ranging from new hires to senior leaders Demonstrated ability to coordinate across teams without formal authority to meet fixed, recurring deadlines Preferred qualifications Experience running onboarding, orientation, or learning and development programs in a fast-growing organization Experience scaling a program's cadence or volume, such as moving from biweekly to weekly delivery, while maintaining quality Experience building workflows or automations with AI tools like Claude to reduce manual work Familiarity with program measurement, including survey tools (such as Qualtrics), feedback analysis, and reporting on program metrics Experience managing a bench or rotation of presenters, facilitators, or volunteer contributors The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.  For sales roles, the range provided is the role's On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $240,000 — $240,000 USD Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study:  A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. About the role Claude is becoming the AI layer inside the platforms where enterprises already work. Our partnership with Salesforce — anchored by Claudeforce — is the first and largest example, and a growing roster of strategic technology partners is following the same path: making Claude the front door to their products for millions of users. As Field Marketing Manager, Tech Partnerships, you will own the ongoing comarketing relationship with these strategic tech partners. You will be the single marketing point of contact for each partner's marketing organization, build and run the joint marketing plan, manage shared marketing funds, and turn large partnership agreements into pipeline-generating field programs — exec summits at partner flagship events, joint workshops, enablement moments, and co-branded activations around the world. Key responsibilities Own the day-to-day comarketing relationship with strategic tech partners, starting with Salesforce: be the one consistent Anthropic marketing voice your partner counterparts plan with, and keep both sides working from a single joint plan Build joint marketing plans with each partner, with goals and success metrics agreed before any shared funds are committed Manage joint marketing development funds (MDF): allocation across programs, spend tracking, compliance with partnership terms, and reporting on what the investment returned Design and execute flagship joint moments — executive summits and sessions at partner events (e.g., Dreamforce, World Tours), joint customer workshops, partner sales kickoff enablement, and co-hosted executive dinners Extend partner programs through the broader ecosystem, including joint activations with shared systems-integrator and consulting partners Measure what matters: partner-sourced and partner-influenced pipeline, program-level attribution, and a partnership marketing health scorecard built with Marketing Ops Protect the brand: apply comarketing guidelines, run messaging and asset approvals in both directions, and know when to say no to a partner ask Operate as connective tissue across Anthropic: Partner Marketing, Partnerships/Business Development, segment field marketers, Product Marketing, Events, and Comms all touch these relationships. You keep them coordinated and the partner experience coherent Minimum qualifications Ownership of a comarketing relationship with a large strategic partner: a hyperscaler, a major SaaS platform, or an equivalent, including joint planning and MDF management A track record of executive-level field programs: summits, flagship-event activations, C-level dinners, and roadshows, with the pipeline to show for them Strong relationship-building skills: able to earn trust with partner marketing leaders while holding Anthropic's line on brand, messaging, and spend Comfort building in ambiguity: the playbook for this motion is being written now, and you'll write much of it Rigor on measurement: fluent in pipeline attribution with sales and ops counterparts Preferred qualifications 7+ years of B2B marketing experience, with significant time in field, partner, or alliance marketing at a technology company Experience on both sides of a platform partnership (at the platform and at the ISV/partner) Familiarity with the AI ecosystem and how enterprises adopt AI products Experience running programs at global scale across multiple regions and event series Experience working with or marketing through global systems integrators The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.  For sales roles, the range provided is the role's On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. About the role AI is changing both sides of the security equation, and Anthropic is focused on putting frontier AI capabilities in the hands of defenders.
