About Anthropic Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. About the role Anthropic is looking for a Staff+ Software Engineer to work on the vector search infrastructure behind Claude. Retrieval is how Claude learns about the world. Web search across claude.ai, the API and agentic surfaces, memory across conversations, and the reinforcement learning workloads that train our next models all depend on fast, cheap, high-recall nearest-neighbor search over billions of vectors. You'll join a small team responsible for the vector database layer that serves Claude's retrieval workloads: its architecture, performance, scalability and cost. This is a foundational role. The team is small, core architectural decisions are still open, and the engineers who join now will shape how the system evolves. The role sits in our Databases organization and works day to day with the Search Platform team, which owns web search indexing, retrieval and serving, and the Memory & Search team, which owns search and memory inside claude.ai. We're looking for someone who has built vector or search systems that ran in production, at scale, with real users and a real on-call. You'll be hands-on in the code, and you'll also be the person deciding how the pieces fit together. Key responsibilities Own the core of Anthropic's vector database layer: index structures, storage layout, query execution and the serving layer Own production readiness - benchmarking against exact search, capacity planning, onboarding new workloads, and the operational tooling to run it at scale Drive the recall, latency and cost trade-offs - quantization, filtered search, index build and refresh strategy, and how compute and storage are separated and scaled Scale throughput by an order of magnitude as research and training demand grows, and work out whether the bottleneck is architecture, hardware or engineering bandwidth Extend the retrieval stack toward hybrid retrieval - lexical search and fused ranking alongside vector search Set the evaluation methodology for the system - recall targets, latency objectives, cost per query, and the regression detection that keeps them honest Set technical direction for a growing team - lead design reviews, make architectural decisions others build on, and mentor the engineers joining the effort Share the on-call for the systems you own Minimum qualifications Direct experience building a vector database or approximate nearest-neighbor search system that ran in production at scale Deep knowledge of ANN index structures (graph-based, clustering-based or disk-resident approaches), vector quantization and filtered search Experience with search relevance and ranking Strong systems programming skills in a language such as Rust, C++ or Go, including performance-critical and memory-intensive code Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed storage or serving systems with strict latency and reliability requirements A track record of independently scoping and delivering ambiguous, multi-quarter technical projects Strong written and verbal communication, with experience driving alignment across teams with different priorities Interest in AI safety and Anthropic's mission Preferred qualifications Experience with object-storage-backed or disaggregated compute and storage database designs Experience building or operating full-text search engines (inverted indexes, BM25) or hybrid retrieval systems Familiarity with embedding models and the retrieval demands of LLM training and inference Experience using GPUs or other accelerators for index build or search Prior experience as a technical lead on a database or search infrastructure team The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role's On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $320,000 — $485,000 USD Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices. Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team. Your safety matters to us. To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit anthropic.com/careers directly for confirmed position openings. How we're different We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills. The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences. Come work with us! Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues. Guidance on Candidates' AI Usage: Learn about our policy for using AI in our application process.
About the role Platform Safety builds the infrastructure that lets Anthropic bring its most capable models to more people, safely and securely. Our systems decide both who can access our most advanced models, and what capabilities they can access, wherever Claude is available. That includes identity and business verification, trusted access programs, and the core services that grant, hold and enforce model access across our products. These systems already power the Cyber Verification Program, which now includes Project Glasswing, and the Life Sciences Verification Program with further more advanced use cases in development. As a Staff+ engineer, you'll help set the technical direction for this work. The foundations are live and adoption is growing quickly, so the next challenge is scale: making access a matter of configuration instead of code, making verification reusable, and giving customers a consistent experience on every surface. You'll work closely with safeguards, product, design and research to turn safety policy into systems that are easy to use and enforce. You'll also take new 0 → 1 efforts from idea to delivery as new capabilities and programs emerge. What you'll do You'll design, build and operate the systems that decide who gets access to our most capable models. You'll build the platform that lets teams across Anthropic launch and run trusted access programs, moving access rules out of code and into data so that launching a new model or complex program is simple and scalable. You'll build out our identity and business verification system (KYC/KYB) as a reusable service that any program can use, which means integrating verification vendors, protecting sensitive personal data, expanding into new regions, and building fair review and appeal paths for customers. You'll also evolve the core services behind every access decision, including the services that grant and hold access and the customer and user identity models they rely on, and keep them highly available and consistent across our own products and cloud platforms. You'll shape the architecture through clear written proposals, review key designs, and mentor engineers on a growing team. You'll also share on-call, lead incident response, and support emerging new programs. You might be a good fit if you: Have a minimum of 8 years of practical experience as a backend or platform engineer, ideally at tech lead level or equivalent, and are comfortable working across the stack when the problem calls for it Have strong product sense, and work closely with cross-functional partners, including non-engineers, to shape and execute strategy in new domains Use AI tools as a regular part of how you design, build and review software Have designed and operated production distributed systems on a critical path, where correctness, latency and availability all matter Take full ownership of your work, from design through build, deployment, operations and iteration Navigate ambiguity and make sound technical decisions independently, have set technical direction that other engineers and teams adopted, and have ideally operated in both 0 → 1 and more mature settings Care about building robust, scalable systems that other engineers and businesses love to use Care about the societal impacts of your work and Anthropic's mission to build safe, beneficial AI Strong candidates may also have: Identity, access control or authorization systems at scale Fraud, risk, trust and safety, or KYC/KYB systems, including working with verification vendors Regulated or compliance-sensitive environments, including handling sensitive personal data Integrating with cloud platforms or partner ecosystems such as AWS, Google Cloud and Azure Deadline to apply: None. About the role Reinforcement learning is how Claude learns to reason, write code, and act autonomously over long horizons. At frontier scale, an RL run is a large distributed system: training, sampling, and environment execution run concurrently across a large fleet of accelerators and hosts. As an engineer in RL Engineering, you'll work on keeping that system secure as it scales. This is a hands-on engineering role. You'll work in the RL codebase and the infrastructure underneath it, alongside the engineers and researchers who build and use it. The system is large and changes as fast as the research does, so security work here has to keep up with that pace without costing performance or velocity. We're hiring from two backgrounds: security engineers who want to work on large-scale ML systems, and ML systems or research engineers who want to work on security. Strong candidates have depth in one and real interest in the other. Key responsibilities Design, build, and operate security controls for RL training systems and the infrastructure they run on Work across the stack (orchestration, environments, training, inference) wherever the work is needed Review designs and code across the RL stack, find security problems, and fix them Build shared libraries and tooling that other RL engineers and researchers build on Build the observability needed to understand what these systems are doing Work with researchers and performance engineers to make sure security changes preserve training correctness and performance Write clear design documents for what you build Minimum qualifications Strong software engineering skills in Python and at least one systems language such as Rust, C++, or Go Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems or security systems in production Strong understanding of security fundamentals Working knowledge of Linux, containers, and cloud infrastructure Experience debugging complex problems across many hosts and services Ability to reason about tradeoffs between security, performance, and reliability Strong written communication, including design documents Preferred qualifications Experience running ML training or inference infrastructure at scale Experience with infrastructure security, such as isolation, access control, networking, or identity Experience with container orchestration such as Kubernetes, and with sandboxed or virtualized code execution at scale Experience building observability for large fleets Experience supporting research teams or other fast-moving internal users Familiarity with reinforcement learning or large language model training workloads The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. For sales roles, the range provided is the role's On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. Annual Salary: $320,000 — $405,000 USD Logistics Minimum education: Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. About the role AI is changing what security teams can do. Claude can find and help fix vulnerabilities in code at a pace that wasn't possible a year ago, and we want defenders to have that advantage first. As Manager, Cybersecurity Sales Specialists, you'll build and lead the team of cybersecurity specialists who sell to security teams across our Americas business units, including financial services, healthcare and life sciences, and technology. Your team partners with the Account Executives in each industry to lead the security strategy and the security deal with CISOs. You'll help shape how Anthropic sells security: how your team covers the business units, how it works with the Account Executive and Applied AI organizations, and how what we learn from customers shapes what we build. The work matters to our mission: a safe transition through transformative AI depends on the people who defend critical systems being able to use it well, and this team is how we get it into their hands. Responsibilities Hire, onboard and develop a high-performing team of cybersecurity sales specialists Own your team's forecast, pipeline health and results across the business units you cover Set your team's coverage model, and agree on clear rules of engagement with the sales leaders who own each industry and with Applied AI leadership on discovery, proofs of concept and architecture Build a pipeline engine with the Account Executives, across their existing accounts and through outbound to security leaders, events and partners Coach your team through complex deals that lead with the customer's problem (finding and fixing vulnerabilities, application security, security operations, and deploying AI agents securely), and act as executive sponsor with CISOs on the most important ones Make security reviews, verification for security use cases, and procurement a repeatable path rather than a deal-by-deal effort Scale enablement so Account Executives across every business unit can spot and qualify security opportunities Bring what your team hears from security customers to sales leadership and to our product, safeguards and marketing teams, and turn it into input on the roadmap Run a healthy team: clear expectations, regular feedback, and performance and development conversations Minimum Qualifications Experience building and leading a cybersecurity sales team that carried a number, whether direct, specialist or overlay, including hiring, coaching and managing performance Track record of closing complex, multi-stakeholder enterprise deals where the security organization was the buyer or the deciding approver, and of coaching others to do the same Fluency in how security teams work, built by selling directly to CISOs, application security leads and security engineers Depth in at least one security domain, such as application security, vulnerability management, security operations, cloud, data, identity or endpoint security History of building a business before there was an established approach, through outbound and partners rather than inherited accounts Ability to lead through influence as well as authority, so that Account Executives and their leaders bring your team in because it helps them win Consultative approach to selling and coaching: understanding the problem before proposing anything, and being honest about what a product can't do Commitment to making AI systems safe and beneficial Preferred Qualifications Background selling security in one of the industries we cover, and an understanding of how security is bought and regulated there Experience managing managers and individual contributors, or scaling a sales team through fast growth Experience leading teams selling AI, developer or data platform products to technical buyers Time spent as a security practitioner or sales engineer before moving into sales leadership The annual compensation range for this role is listed below. About the role Anthropic's mission is to ensure that the world safely makes the transition through transformative AI. Security is one of the clearest places where that mission plays out: the same capabilities that help attackers move faster can help defenders move faster too, and helping them use those capabilities safely and well is what this team is for. Security teams are among the earliest and most demanding users of frontier AI. They use Claude to review code at scale, find vulnerabilities before attackers do, and work through alert queues their analysts can't keep up with. Anthropic's Applied AI organization is building a dedicated Security team to help them do this well, and we are looking for its first leader. You will build this team from zero. You'll decide which security customers the team serves first, who you hire and in what order, and how the team works with Sales, Applied AI Engineering, and our security, legal, and trust partners. You'll also stay hands-on with a few of our most important security customers, because what you learn in those accounts becomes the playbook for everyone else. You'll also set the standard for how security customers use Claude responsibly, including where a person has to review the output before anyone acts on it. What you'll do Hire, onboard, and develop the first Applied AI Architects on the Security team. Coach senior and early-career architects differently, and give each one clear goals. Decide where the team spends its time: which segments and account types come first, which deals get architect coverage, and how to say no clearly when demand outruns headcount. Partner with security account executives on joint account plans, regular pipeline and forecast reviews, and deals where the customer's security review sets the close date. Guide customers from discovery through evaluations and proofs of concept with written success criteria. Then take them from one-time code scans to sustained workloads: application security in the development lifecycle, continuous automated penetration testing, alert triage and investigation, and vulnerability and threat intelligence. Work alongside the security ISVs, systems integrators, and managed security providers already in our customers' accounts. Keep a clear line between what Anthropic delivers and what partners deliver. Bring in Applied AI Engineers and our security, legal, and trust teams when a customer's build or review needs them. Write the first security playbooks, reference implementations, and evaluation approaches. Bring what you learn back to Product, Engineering, and Research, so Claude becomes more useful and more trustworthy for defenders at the same time. Carry a small number of strategic security accounts yourself, from executive briefings with CISOs to hands-on workshops with their engineers. You may be a good fit if you Have 12+ years of industry experience with at least 4 years managing a team of customer-facing technical people, such as solutions architects, sales engineers, or security consultants, and can show how the team grew and performed under you. Have hands-on security depth in at least one area, such as application security, detection and response, offensive security, or vulnerability management, deep enough that practitioners trust your judgment . Application security experience highly preferred. Have used LLMs for real security work, such as code review, vulnerability discovery, triage, or investigation, and can say where they helped and where they failed. Have worked large enterprise security deals end to end, including customer security reviews, in close partnership with sales. Care about making AI both safe and useful for defenders, and can explain security risk and value to a CISO and to the engineers who will run the work, in terms each one cares about.
