The role We're looking for a Senior Engineer to join our Foundations team, the backend backbone that builds the reliable, scalable, fast systems everyone else at Encord builds on top of. The team's core challenges sit deep in distributed and data-intensive systems. The product mindset on this team is different from most of the company: short-term product insight matters less, long-term matters a lot. Foundations plans around how the next 6, 12, and 24 months will look, with an overarching shape to the problem: handling multiple orders of magnitude the data we handle today. Encord is growing rapidly, with our product as the key driver of that growth. A year ago, we were a team of 100; now, we're over 150 and continuing to accelerate. The systems that got us here won't get us to what's next. That's the problem you'll help solve. What you'll do Take end-to-end ownership of significant projects within our database and processing systems, from design and architectural decisions all the way to deployment, monitoring, and measuring impact Build robust distributed systems and reason carefully about how they fail and how they behave under load Contribute to performant protocols and APIs, such as our label-format API, that customers use directly Tackle complex domains and immense scale with simple solutions Raise the bar through code reviews, pairing, and helping engineers around you do their best work Who we're looking for You've seen and built a lot. You have personally developed and maintained multiple systems from scratch, and you know what trade-offs are involved in building reliable, performant software at speed You want your work to have a tangible outcome for people. You're not satisfied with building products that do not see the light of day You are a builder. You enjoy all aspects of building not only software but a complete product, and are comfortable moving across the stack when necessary You enjoy problem-solving and thinking from first principles, reach for the simplest solution that works, and know when boring technology wins You're happy to tackle problems without a predefined, clear definition or obvious solution, and are excited to have autonomy to make decisions as you go You understand that being a member of a high-performing team requires two things. You contribute your best work and help others contribute their best. You'll always lend a helping hand when needed and level up those around you Experience requirements 5+ years building large-scale backend infrastructure applications Deep fluency in at least one high-level language (we use Python and TypeScript, but we care more about depth than the specific language) Solid grounding in distributed systems concepts (databases, replication, partitioning, queuing, caching) and how they behave under load Experience owning services in production and improving quality through code reviews, testing, rollout, and monitoring Experience with data migrations or re-architecture projects is a plus Tech stack We are technology-agnostic at Encord and are not looking for experience across all of these. As long as you're open to learning, please apply. Backend: Python Frontend: TypeScript and React Deployment: Kubernetes Infrastructure: GCP Machine learning: PyTorch, CUDA, Ray Why Encord Competitive salary, commission, and meaningful equity in a high-growth startup Strong in-person culture: the team works from our London office 4+ days/week 25 days annual leave + UK public holidays Annual learning & development budget Travel for customer visits, events, and conferences across the UK and Europe Daily company lunches Monthly socials & bi-annual team offsites Find Jobs in United Kingdom on Arbeitnow

About the Team Mission Simulation is STARK's digital proving ground — the tactical environment where our entire ecosystem of UAVs, surface vessels, and EW systems converges. The Mission Simulation team is a small, specialized group based in Munich, working closely with our platform and C2 teams to integrate all multi-domain assets into high-fidelity, Software-in-the-Loop simulators. We move fast, ship realistic environments, and build for three core purposes: rigorous testing, high-stakes demos, and tactical training. There is no room for gamification. We simulate the reality of combat — from complex swarm logic to EW degradation — ensuring that developers can fail fast, and real soldiers can train safely before hitting the battlefield. Your Mission As a Systems Integration & QA Engineer, you are the critical link between our physical simulation hardware and our software development team. You will physically assemble our simulator setups and rigorously test the software environments running on them. By building our QA processes from the ground up, you ensure that every simulation runs flawlessly, and you provide highly detailed, actionable feedback to our software engineers before any system is used for high-stakes training or customer demos. Responsibilities Assemble and configure physical simulator hardware setups, integrating PCs, networking gear, and tactical peripherals (e.g., VR, HOTAS) to create realistic testing environments. Execute comprehensive software testing within the Mission Simulation environment (e.g., VBS4, custom C++ modules) to identify bugs, performance bottlenecks, and tactical inaccuracies. Design and establish foundational QA testing protocols, test plans, and bug-tracking workflows from scratch. Collaborate directly with the software engineering team, translating simulator performance issues into clear, actionable technical feedback and bug reports. Validate software updates and new releases on the physical simulator setups to guarantee stability before they are deployed for customer demos or tactical training. Reproduce complex software and integration bugs systematically to assist developers in rapid resolution. Required Skills Degree in IT, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. 3+ years of experience in software QA testing, system integration, or a similar role bridging IT hardware and software development. Hands-on experience assembling IT/simulator hardware and configuring operating systems (Windows and Linux). Proven ability to define and build QA processes, write structured test plans, and manage bug-tracking workflows. Strong technical communication skills to effectively translate user-end bugs into actionable data for software developers. Nice-To-Have Familiarity with simulation engines (e.g., VBS4, Unreal, Unity) or complex tactical gaming environments. Basic scripting skills (e.g., Python, PowerShell) to automate repetitive software testing or OS configuration tasks. Experience in the defense sector or foundational knowledge of military operations/tactics to help evaluate simulation realism. Fluent English (C1 preferred). German language skills are advantageous but not required. Equal Opportunity: At Stark Defence, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing team. You will work alongside industry-leading minds on autonomous systems, advanced propulsion, and secure cyber platforms. We foster a fast-paced, collaborative environment where bold ideas are supported by serious R&D backing. About Us STARK is a European defence technology company building the next generation of unmanned systems. We design, develop and manufacture software-defined, mass-scalable and cost-effective platforms that give NATO operators a decisive edge in highly contested environments. We are focused on delivering deployable, high-performance capability — not future promises. In a time of rising threats, our work strengthens the technological edge of NATO Allies and their Partners. About the team You will join our hardware engineering team, working closely with engineers across propulsion, power systems, testing, and aircraft development to turn measured data into better-performing unmanned systems. Your mission Your mission is to work hands-on with the parts of the aircraft that turn stored energy into flight: the motors, the batteries, and the propulsion and power components that decide how far, how fast, and how long our platforms fly. You support the hardware team from bench characterisation through data analysis in MATLAB and Python. You aren't just swapping components on a bench; you are helping generate the measured evidence that decides what actually flies — and learning how unmanned hardware is designed, tested, and pushed to its limits. Responsibilities Support characterisation and bench testing of motors, propellers, batteries, and power components for our UAS platforms. Help set up test rigs and instrumentation, and capture clean, repeatable measurement data. Assist with component selection and trade-offs by turning test data into clear comparisons. Reduce and analyse test data in MATLAB and Python — efficiency, thrust, endurance, thermal and discharge behaviour. Visualise results so the engineering team can make decisions from them quickly. Keep test setups, measurements, and findings documented and traceable. Qualifications Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or a comparable engineering field. Working knowledge of MATLAB and Python for data analysis. Interest in and some exposure to UAS, electric propulsion (motors / ESCs), or battery / power systems. Must be a citizen of a NATO member state (due to export control and security regulations). Practical, hands-on mindset — comfortable at the bench and with a multimeter as much as in a script. Good written and verbal communication skills in English; German is a plus. Hands-on: You like building, measuring, and finding out what really happens. Rigorous: You trust clean measurements over assumptions. Curious: You want to understand why a component behaves the way it does. Nice to have Experience with test benches, DAQ, or measurement instrumentation. Familiarity with battery testing, thermal behaviour, or motor/propeller characterisation. Personal projects with drones, RC aircraft, batteries, or robotics. Equal Opportunity: At Stark Defence, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing team.
