Senior Staff Engineer, Expansion Experiences

About Gusto At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy . AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process. Most small businesses on Gusto are only using a fraction of what could actually help them run their business: the right plan tier, the right benefit, the right feature at the right moment. We're investing in building more of that expertise directly into the product itself, through recommendations, nurture journeys, and self-serve conversion paths that work alongside the support our Sales team already provides. As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on Expansion Experiences, you'll own outcomes across that whole funnel, from the moment a customer's need surfaces through to the ongoing value of what they adopt. That means real autonomy: shaping the technical approach, partnering with Product, Design, and Data Science to decide what's worth building, calling the shots on what to test now versus later, and flagging the technical investments the team will need before they become urgent. If you want your work to move retained and expansion revenue for a company serving 500,000+ small businesses, this is the team. Here's what you'll do day-to-day: Own outcomes across the full expansion funnel, not just a single surface or feature within it. Shape the technical approach and architecture behind recommendations and conversion journeys so it holds up as a foundation other initiatives can build on. Make sharp scoping calls under a time box: ship the simplest version that proves or disproves an idea, then iterate based on what you learn. Design experiments and use ambiguous or noisy data to decide what's worth scaling versus cutting. Partner independently with Product, Design, and Data Science to help shape the roadmap, not just execute it. Raise the engineering bar through pragmatic technical direction, strong code review, and mentoring engineers around you, scoping out work and delegating it to other engineers on the team once it's ready to hand off. Here's what we're looking for: Successful applicants typically have 10+ years of software development experience, including building and shipping full-stack, customer-facing products at scale. A product-minded engineer who starts from the customer problem and the metric that matters, not just the ticket, and can operate independently across product, design, and data partners. Experience in a growth, lifecycle, or conversion-focused context (onboarding, upsell flows, personalization, or recommendations) is ideal — or a demonstrated ability to think this way even without the exact domain background. Demonstrated ability to move quickly and execute with high quality — someone who ships, measures, and iterates rather than waiting for perfect certainty. Experience owning multi-quarter initiatives end to end, from early concept through measurable business impact. Comfort navigating ambiguity and leading peers through influence, without relying on formal authority. Experience with large-scale refactors, performance and reliability work, and a strong sense of technical ownership over your product area. A track record of mentoring engineers and helping teams scale their impact, including knowing when to delegate scoped work to other engineers rather than carrying it yourself. A track record of spotting technical or product opportunities before being asked, and building the case to prioritize them. Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities. Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code. Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders. Nice to Have: Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails, React, GraphQL, and TypeScript. Please note that travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required for this position. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please share with your recruiter. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees. Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at 191,000–240,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and 225,000–275,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above. At Gusto, we don't use titles the traditional way, as a signal of rank or hierarchy. Instead, our titles describe two things at once — your craft (what you do, e.g. Engineering, Design) and your scope of ownership (what you're accountable for) — which is why you'll see something like "Head of X" instead of a rank word like "Director" that tells you neither. Because of this, the title on this posting may look different from what you'd expect based on the scope and seniority of the role, and from how similar roles are typically titled elsewhere. If you have questions about how this role compares to your current title or level, your recruiter can help translate. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees. Reliable, consistent presence: We expect regular and predictable attendance, whether you're working in-office, hybrid, or fully remote, so that you stay closely connected to your team, customers, and stakeholders in real time and ensure colleagues and customers receive the timely support and responsiveness they deserve. Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way. The Community You Will Join : No global movement springs from individuals. It takes an entire team united behind something big. On the Delivery team at Airbnb, we're proud to be at the forefront of the sharing economy. We recognize that we are the leaders of a new, worldwide phenomenon, and that's why we're working so hard to build the world's most loyal travel community. Together, our team provides support to more than 100 million lifetime guests and 3 million listings in over 191 countries. Our India Global operations hub delivers several of Community Support's most sensitive and complex specialty services, working as one team with our global process leads. We are looking for an agile, operationally strong leader who knows how to motivate and inspire teams in a cutting-edge and fast-paced environment.   The Difference You Will Make : As a Senior Manager, Safety you will own end-to-end delivery for a portfolio of Global Operation's most sensitive and highest-severity specialty services, spanning close to 200 team members across Specialists, Team Specialists, Supervisors and Managers. You will be accountable for KPIs, people and the overall health of the business, with direct exposure to user-safety, regulatory and financial-loss risk and the authority to make final calls on complex, irreversible decisions.  You will act as senior delivery partner to the global process leads for your services — translating global agendas into on-the-ground execution and giving those leads a single accountable counterpart at site. You will be expected to build and maintain trusted relationships with senior stakeholders while constantly looking for opportunities to streamline and optimize our operations. As our portfolio evolves, you should expect the mix of services in scope to change, and be comfortable picking up new skills and queues as the business requires.   A Typical Day : Drive delivery performance across the portfolio: Manage the day-to-day operations of the services in scope, driving the highest level of performance from the teams and establishing the right performance management and coaching structure and cadence in collaboration with Delivery leaders and Quality teams Define, monitor, report and improve efficiency and quality metrics for each service based on its performance scorecard, keeping Global operations in India aligned to global standards while accounting for local nuance Adapt and pre-empt adaptations of the performance management structure based on shifting business priorities, volume patterns and peak planning Bring a data-driven lens to occupancy, SLA, capacity and workforce decisions, and make timely calls when the numbers move   Lead and grow a multi-layered leadership team: Lead a mixed layer of leadership — a Manager alongside Supervisors reporting in directly — which means being comfortable leading junior leadership hands-on rather than only through a manager layer Coach Supervisors on daily performance management as readily as you set quarterly direction, and stay close enough to the floor to spot execution gaps early Support Managers and Supervisors to ensure high employee engagement and delivery of a world class experience for both our community and our internal stakeholders Oversee team structure, recruitment, onboarding, training and upskilling plans, and build a credible succession and cross-skilling pipeline across the portfolio Be a focused, visible leader who creates supportive connections across the whole team through open communication, and who carries teams through change and periods of instability   Partner with global process leads and eliminate functional silos: Stay ahead of global Ops priorities and make sure ACC delivery is set up to execute them — owning the on-the-ground landing of global programmes to timeline and quality Surface operational pain points early enough to influence global design rather than after the fact, and carry ACC best practice back into the global forums Work across services and with Quality, Training, Business Process Improvement, Analytics and WFM to eliminate functional and working silos, so process changes land consistently rather than function by function Feed insights into process, policy and tooling improvements, and drive relationships and coordinate requests with shared services teams Support the global consolidation agenda where ACC is scaling towards becoming the primary or sole servicing site for a skill, ensuring transitions land without disruption to the community   Manage senior and executive stakeholders: Be responsible and accountable for executive and senior leadership stakeholder management, adapting your communication to the audience and remaining flexible and available to our leaders Have a deep understanding and expertise of our operations, workflows, policies and systems, so you can assess cases yourself and make the right call on what needs to be done to solve our users' issues Represent ACC credibly in global forums, holding policy, quality and risk conversations independently   Work with the long term in mind to reduce the volume and severity of complex cases: Track and understand the common themes behind complex cases and escalations, close the loop, and set up the right forums to solve root causes with cross-functional teams across Global Ops Partner with cross-functional Airbnb teams to champion improvements to our process, policies and product that improve the customer experience and reduce community escalations   Your Expertise : Strong end-to-end frontline operations management experience in a customer-facing environment, with a track record of owning KPIs, people and business health for a large team; overall experience of minimum 13 years. Highly agile — able to pick up new skills, services and queues quickly, and to re-prioritize as the portfolio and global agenda shift Advanced people leadership, performance management, coaching and mentoring experience, including leading through both a manager layer and direct supervisor relationships Comfortable operating hands-on with junior leadership: coaching Supervisors on daily execution while holding a longer-term agenda Ability to work in a high-pressure environment with visibility to sensitive, confidential and potentially traumatic content, and to support a team working with the same Experience in complex case management with VP-level stakeholders and above preferred; crisis management or Trust & Safety experience in a marketplace business is an advantage Strong influencing, presentation, interpersonal and teamwork skills — able to work collaboratively and consultatively across expansive business partner organizations, including global process leads and shared services Ability to handle multiple complex, fast-moving situations at once and make sound decisions with incomplete information Highly organized with strong project management skills, able to switch between very tactical, urgent work and long-term planning or programme management Strong analytical skills and a data-driven approach to operations High energy, strong attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and deliver in a fast-paced environment Strong communication skills and the ability to take a team through significant change Bachelor's degree or equivalent required; MBA or other Master's degree preferred Ability to flex working hours to respond to global business demand; a high level of reactivity is expected Comfortable to work in 24*7 rotational shifts with your team, and work from office in Gurugram.   Our commitment to inclusion & belonging Airbnb is committed to working with the broadest talent pool possible.
