"Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads." Doc Brown, Back to the Future Senior Software Engineer - TypeScript & Node, Distributed Messaging (Kafka / RabbitMQ) and AI Coding Agents. Remote, USA (Pacific overlap preferred). Up to $230k + equity. Full-time. US citizens and Green Card holders only - no sponsorship or visa transfers of any kind. READ THIS BIT FIRST Three things decide whether this role is for you. Everything below is detail. Deep TypeScript and Node. Expert level, not exposure. Modern service frameworks, a monorepo setup, React on the front end, cloud-native infrastructure. If TypeScript has been incidental to a Java or Python career, this is not your role. Real distributed messaging Kafka, RabbitMQ or equivalent. This is the single most common reason strong resumes get rejected here. Event-driven systems, queueing and streaming, ordering, idempotency, retries, and what happens when a consumer falls over at volume. Calling REST APIs is not this. Shipping production code with AI coding agents. Hands-on, in a real codebase, right now. You should have opinions about what you delegate to an agent, what you never would, and how you review what comes back. Theory and weekend experiments will not clear the bar. Miss one of the three and the conversation stops there. Have all three and you are already most of the way into a process with a company paying well above market for engineers who do this properly. THE COMPANY A venture-backed B2B software company of roughly 100 people, rebuilding the data layer that moves orders, invoices and shipment data between the companies that actually make and ship things. It is a category that has run on decades-old tooling, manual configuration and months-long onboarding since roughly the fax era. This team turned it into a self-service platform with AI built into the core of the product, and hundreds of enterprise customers now push serious production volume through it daily. Boring-sounding industry. Enormous, sticky market. Genuinely interesting engineering. WHY THIS ONE IS DIFFERENT Most companies will tell you they are AI-forward. Usually that means someone expensed a licence and the team is encouraged to experiment. Here, coding agents are standard equipment - simply how the work gets done. Which means the senior engineering job has quietly turned into something more interesting than it was three years ago. You are not the fastest typist on the team. You are the person who decides what is worth building, designs the system it lives in, directs the agents doing the construction, and reviews their output with exactly the scepticism you would bring to a teammate's pull request. And here is what gets missed in every breathless post about AI replacing engineers: this makes deep fundamentals more valuable, not less. You cannot safely approve what an agent produces if you do not genuinely understand the system underneath it. An agent will happily hand you something that compiles, passes tests, and quietly falls apart the first time real volume hits it at 3am. Catching that is the job. WHAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY BE DOING Designing the hard parts. You lead the technical design of major initiatives and product features. You write the design docs. You make the call on architecture and you argue it in business terms, not just technical ones. Directing and reviewing AI agents. Decomposing work so agents can execute it well, steering that execution, and reviewing it rigorously. You set the standard for what an agent is and is not allowed to ship. Living in distributed systems. The platform is event-driven, moving high volumes of transactional data between parties who all have opinions about format and timing. Owning reliability. Enterprise customers' supply chains depend on what you build. You own how it behaves under load and when things break. Raising the bar. Mentoring other engineers and lifting their design skills. Partnering with product. Pushing back when the engineering cost does not justify the outcome, and proposing the better route to the same result. WHAT THIS ROLE IS NOT Not a management role. No reports, no headcount, no review cycles. If you went into management and came back to IC because building is what you love, that reads as excellent judgement here. Not execution inside someone else's architecture. If the last few years were delivering well-specified work within a design someone more senior set, this will not land at this level. Not a prompt-engineering gig. Using agents is the baseline, not the achievement. Not a process role. Nobody is being hired to run ceremonies, own a board, or evangelise a methodology. Not backend-only, frontend-only or infra-only. This is product engineering. Not hybrid, and not sponsored. Genuinely remote, US-based, Pacific overlap preferred. No visa sponsorship and no visa transfers. THE REST OF THE SCREEN 5-15 years in product engineering, shipping things customers use. A growth-stage background - Series C or later, or Series A/B with genuine enterprise traction. End-to-end ownership of a major system or product area. Product-minded, strong communicator who can argue a trade-off with people who do not write code. B2B SaaS experience is a bonus. THE DETAILS Up to $230k + equity. Full-time and permanent. Remote-first by design, with unlimited PTO and a work-from-home benefit. Four-stage interview process. Several engineers are being hired on this requisition, so you are not competing for a single seat. This is a confidential search handled by Big Wave Digital. Bike Club is changing the way families access children's bikes. Through our subscription model, we make it easy for families to get the right bike at the right time, while keeping bikes in circulation for longer. We are a purpose-led, fast-growing business with a strong focus on customer growth, retention and building a more circular approach to children's cycling. Tasks The Opportunity This is a high-trust, high-exposure role for an ambitious graduate or early-career professional who wants to understand how a growing, purpose-led business really works. You will work closely with the Chief of Staff, Executive Chair and People Manager, and will regularly attend Executive Management, Senior Leadership Team and other key business meetings. You will keep the leadership rhythm running smoothly: organising meetings, preparing information, capturing decisions, following up actions and making sure important work does not get lost between conversations. Alongside this, you will support People operations and take ownership of essential business administration, with AI as a genuine part of how you work rather than an afterthought. The role offers unusual breadth and visibility across strategy, operations, governance, and the People function. It is a practical learning opportunity for someone who is curious, commercially minded, comfortable experimenting with AI tools, and keen to build a career in startups or scale-ups. Purpose Of The Role To make the Executive Chair, Chief of Staff and People Manager more effective by providing excellent coordination, preparation and follow-through. By taking ownership of recurring administration and the operating rhythm around leadership and People processes, and by using AI thoughtfully to simplify and speed up that work, you will free senior leaders to focus on strategy, decision-making and delivery. Key Responsibilities Leadership meetings and Executive Support Coordinate diaries and meeting schedules for the Executive Chair and the SLT, resolving clashes and helping prioritise competing demands. Run the administration for Executive Management, SLT and other key meetings, including forward schedules, agendas, papers, room or video arrangements and attendance. Attend key meetings to take clear notes, record decisions and maintain action logs, following up with owners ahead of deadlines. Coordinate the timely collection and formatting of leadership and Board materials, ensuring papers are complete, consistent and ready for review. Prepare and format presentations, briefing notes, reports and other documents, using AI and digital tools to improve quality and speed, from drafting and summarising to formatting and proofing. Support travel, offsites, workshops and company events, including logistics, materials and follow-up. Handle correspondence and sensitive information with sound judgement, discretion and professionalism. Support the planning and coordination of company events. Business Administration & Project Coordination Maintain central trackers for priorities, decisions and actions, giving leaders a reliable view of progress and overdue items. Support the Chief of Staff with cross-functional projects by coordinating inputs, setting up working sessions, tracking milestones and escalating blockers. Help gather and organise information for company KPIs, monthly reporting and strategic initiatives, using AI tools to speed up collation and surface what matters. Provide practical support across the business, including supplier coordination, record keeping, shared filing systems and ad-hoc problem-solving. People Coordination & Employee Experience Act as a friendly, reliable first point of contact for employees on HR administrative matters. Manage the People inbox, triaging and responding to routine employee queries, and escalating anything sensitive or complex. Manage and maintain accurate employee records in HiBob, including new starters, leavers and employee changes. Assist with recruitment administration, including scheduling interviews, liaising with candidates and hiring managers, and posting job adverts. Support the coordination of new starter onboarding, including preparing onboarding materials, scheduling induction sessions, and ensuring new joiners have what they need for a smooth first day and first few weeks. Collate and check payroll inputs, such as new starters, leavers, changes to pay, benefits and working patterns, ready for submission. Using AI to Simplify People and Business Processes Actively look for opportunities where AI can simplify or speed up People and business administration, from HiBob data and payroll prep to recruitment coordination and reporting. Help build simple, reusable AI-supported templates and workflows for recurring tasks, such as onboarding materials, meeting notes, standard employee correspondence and report summaries. Use AI tools responsibly and in line with data protection and confidentiality requirements, particularly where employee or sensitive data is involved, always applying your own judgement and checking outputs before they're used or shared. Bring a curious, practical mindset to new AI tools and ways of working, and share what you learn with the wider People and Executive team. Requirements What We Are Looking For We are more interested in your potential, judgement and approach than in a long list of previous job titles. You may be a recent graduate or have gained early experience in administration, operations, HR, or project coordination. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines. Clear and confident written and verbal communicator who can adapt to different audiences. Proven experience in diary management and scheduling for senior stakeholders. Excellent attention to detail, particularly when handling sensitive employee data, and comfortable checking information before it goes to senior stakeholders. Discreet and trustworthy, with strong judgement around confidentiality. Comfortable working across both general business administration and HR administration. Proactive, resourceful and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Comfortable supporting senior stakeholders, including at Executive Chair level. Confident using common workplace tools, genuinely curious about AI, and keen to find practical ways to use it responsibly to simplify HR and business processes. What You Will Gain Direct exposure to executive decision-making and the practical realities of scaling a business. A broad understanding of strategy, operations, governance and People processes. Hands-on experience applying AI tools to real business and People workflows, not just using them, but helping shape how the team uses them. About Pleo Messy spend management is tricky business. And tedious processes are a lose-lose situation for all involved, not just finance. At Pleo, we're changing that. We build spend solutions that make managing money seamless, empowering, and surprisingly effective for finance teams and employees alike - with a vision to help all businesses 'go beyond'. The word 'Pleo' actually means 'more than you'd expect', and living by that mantra has been the secret to our success over the last 10 years. Now, we're at a pivotal moment in our journey; every move we make has a direct impact on our 40,000+ customers, our business, and our collective success. We need people who take pride in uncovering customer needs, who turn complex problems into simple solutions, challenge the way things are done (respectfully), and always aim high. With great ambitions driving us forward, we can't say we've got this whole thing figured out. And frankly, that's half the fun! What we can say is that we're a driven, progressive, and, importantly, a kind bunch of 850+ people from over 100 nationalities, all committed to delivering the future of business spending, together. About the role In this role, you will play a central part in assessing, questioning, and enhancing how customers experience Pleo. Drawing on deep regulatory knowledge, you will lead Consumer Duty initiatives, actively spot potential customer harm, examine what drives customer journeys, and ensure targeted remediation creates lasting, positive impact. You'll need sharp analytical skills and the confidence to influence stakeholders, translating data and MI into decisive action. You will construct and manage dashboards and reporting mechanisms that illuminate emerging patterns, vulnerable customer risks, and key concerns, offering executive leadership clear visibility into operational gaps and necessary solutions. Your contribution goes well beyond producing MI. You will conduct QA across complex complaint handling and sensitive customer interactions, manage Ombudsman cases, and speak up when evidence shows outcomes aren't meeting expectations. Collaborating across teams, you'll turn data-driven insights into practical improvements, drive projects to completion, and evaluate whether changes deliver real results for our users. We're seeking someone who views Consumer Duty as a powerful driver of business improvement rather than a routine compliance exercise. You'll bring together technical understanding, rigorous analysis, and constructive challenge to investigate root causes, align key partners, deliver change, and prove that customer experiences are continuously getting better. Who you'll be working with and reporting to You'll work closely with teams across Customer Support, Complaints, Compliance, Risk, Operations, Product, Data, Technology, and other business functions. The role will have broad exposure across the organisation, particularly when customer outcome risks or Consumer Duty-related remediation require cross-functional action. You'll also work closely with senior stakeholders through Consumer Duty governance and reporting, helping translate detailed analysis into clear insights, risks, recommendations, and actions. What you'll be doing As a Consumer Duty Specialist, you will: Turn data into customer outcome insight : Build and own MI, dashboards, KPIs, and reporting that give the business a clear view of customer outcomes, trends, risks, and emerging areas of concern. Own Consumer Duty reporting : Produce monthly and quarterly Consumer Duty reporting, turning complex data into a clear story for senior leadership and Board-level audiences. You'll go beyond showing what happened to explain why it matters and what we should do about it . Identify customer harm : Use complaints, QA findings, customer feedback, vulnerable customer data, Ombudsman cases, and MI to identify potential customer harm, emerging risks, and systemic issues. Challenge the business : Where the evidence suggests customers aren't receiving good outcomes, you'll be expected to ask difficult questions, challenge assumptions, and ensure the issue is properly understood and addressed. Drive remediation and change : Work with stakeholders across the business to agree remediation plans, establish clear owners and timelines, and help drive Consumer Duty-related projects and improvements through to completion. Provide complaints QA : Conduct weekly quality reviews of complaints handled by the Complaints Manager, using findings to identify quality issues, customer risks, and wider trends. Manage Ombudsman activity : Act as the primary operational contact with the UK Ombudsman, managing referred complaints, responses, remedies, compensation, invoices, and related communications. Leverage AI and smart automation : Spot opportunities to apply automated tools and AI to scale and streamline Consumer Duty analytics, monitoring, and workflows. You will feel empowered to test emerging tech and eliminate repetitive manual work, maintaining proper critical evaluation and human governance whenever compliance risks or customer impacts are involved. What you bring You'll thrive in this role if you have: Strong Consumer Duty knowledge : You understand the principles of Consumer Duty and how they translate into practical customer outcomes, particularly across complaints, customer support, vulnerable customers, and customer journeys. Strong data and MI experience : You know how to take complex data, build meaningful dashboards and reporting, and identify the insights that actually matter. You're comfortable working with data rather than simply consuming reports created by others. A customer outcome mindset : You're naturally curious about how customers are experiencing the business and are able to connect data, customer feedback, complaints, and operational activity to real customer outcomes. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills : You can spot trends, anomalies, and patterns, investigate root causes, and determine whether an issue is isolated or potentially systemic. The confidence to challenge : You're comfortable questioning decisions, processes, and assumptions when the evidence suggests customers may be experiencing poor outcomes. You can challenge constructively and build relationships at the same time. A bias towards action : You don't believe reporting is the end of the process. You want to understand what needs to change, bring people together, and help make it happen. Project and remediation experience : You're comfortable managing actions, timelines, dependencies, stakeholders, and risks across cross-functional projects, particularly where there is a regulatory, customer, or operational outcome to deliver. An AI and automation mindset : You're naturally curious about how AI and automation can make processes more efficient, improve analysis, and free up time for higher-value work. You look for sensible opportunities to automate repetitive tasks and use AI to augment your thinking, while maintaining appropriate human oversight, critical judgement, and accountability — particularly where customer outcomes or regulatory decisions are involved. Why is this role a good fit for you This role is a good fit for you if: You love using data to uncover things that others might not see. You want your analysis to drive real change, rather than sit in a report or dashboard. You enjoy asking "why?" and getting to the root cause of customer problems. You're comfortable challenging the business when the evidence tells you something isn't working. This role is not a good fit for you if: You prefer to produce reporting without being involved in what happens afterwards. You're uncomfortable challenging stakeholders or having difficult conversations when customer outcomes aren't where they should be. You prefer working within a narrow functional remit rather than across multiple teams. How you'll develop in this role In your first 6 months at Pleo, you'll: Build a deep understanding of our customer outcome data, existing Consumer Duty MI, complaints, vulnerable customer journeys, and current areas of risk. Take ownership of key Consumer Duty dashboards and reporting, developing a clear view of the metrics and insights that matter most. Establish strong relationships with stakeholders across Customer Support, Complaints, Compliance, Risk, Operations, Product, Data, and Technology. Lead the analysis behind Consumer Duty reporting and help shape how customer outcomes are presented to senior stakeholders and the Board. Over time, you'll have the opportunity to shape how Pleo measures, understands, and improves customer outcomes, helping move Consumer Duty from a regulatory obligation into a genuine driver of better customer experiences and better business decisions. Transparency is important to us so we also wanted to share some insights about what we're looking for in applications to ensure you can set yourself up for success! Last time we advertised this role, we received a really high volume of applications but could only select so many. Some of the key reasons why previous candidates didn't make it past the application screening stage include: CV writing and content: we receive a lot of CVs, and many of them are AI-generated. We love seeing people leverage AI—it's a big focus for us internally too—but without human intervention, these CVs can sometimes become generic and fail to show a candidate in the best light. What we're really looking for is the specific details of real impact that only you know from your previous experience. A top tip from us is to use the "Achieved X, as measured by Y, by doing Z" formula (credit: Laszlo Bock, ~2014) to give a really clear picture of what you've worked on. A final note: including links to your previous companies' websites is a huge help and allows us to truly understand your background! Application care: every single application we receive is reviewed by a human (yes, hundreds of them) because we believe that candidates' efforts should be matched by an equal level of human care. This means that we expect a similar level of attention put into your application. Read and answer the application questions carefully, they make a huge difference in our decision-making process. Profile to role fit: highlight most important aspects of the role, points that might get misunderstood, any specific industry requirements etc. About your application English first. Since it's our company language, please submit your application in English. You'll be using it a lot if you join us. A fair look for everyone. Our talent team reads every single application to ensure the process is fair. To keep things running smoothly, we only accept applications through our system—our support team can't pass on calls or emails. Diversity drives us. About Dust Work is being rewritten, and the people holding the pen are the ones who actually run it. With enterprise-grade governance, flexible model choice, and a collaborative interface for humans and agents to work together, Dust empowers AI Operators at the world's fastest-moving companies to rewire how work gets done. With 70%+ weekly active users, people stick with Dust as much as they do with Slack and Notion. We don't get piloted and shelved. We land once, and spread. We're at an exciting stage of our journey, and growing fast. We're serving great customers like Datadog, 1Password, Cursor, Clay, Vanta and Persona, and aim to x5 our growth by the end of 2026. Dust is backed by Sequoia with a determined team of optimists (coming from Stripe, OpenAI, and Stanford) who like to focus on users, ship fast, and don't take themselves too seriously while doing so. The Generalist named us among the Future 50 . The role Dust is growing fast, and we want every person who joins us to feel welcome, supported, connected and able to do their best work. As our People Experience Manager, you'll shape how people experience Dust, from their first day and the moments that bring us together to the way our offices in Paris, London, New York and San Francisco support the team. We're looking for someone who is operationally excellent and creatively ambitious. You'll handle the details carefully, and you'll also look for ways to make the employee experience much better. One day you might be redesigning part of onboarding, the next planning a company offsite, acting on survey feedback, or working with a site lead to improve one of our offices. This role works as a partner across the company. You'll work most closely with People Operations, who lead on the core people processes. Together, you'll make sure the employee experience is well run behind the scenes and thoughtful in how people actually experience it. In Paris, you'll also work closely with our Office Manager, who runs our HQ on site and leads much of our day-to-day office life and events. In London, New York and San Francisco, you'll coordinate with local site leads. You'll also work with IT, Finance, Legal, Marketing, leadership and outside partners. Your guiding principle: consistency where it matters, local adaptation where it creates a better experience. What you will do: Own the employee journey Own the onboarding experience end to end, working closely with our People Ops Specialist, from pre-boarding and equipment to first-day logistics and the first few weeks, so new joiners can contribute from day one in every location. Work with People Ops, IT, Finance, hiring managers, our Paris Office Manager and site leads so every handoff in the employee journey is smooth. Partner with People Ops and IT on offboarding, so people leave with the same care they got when they joined. Be a trusted point of contact for everyday employee questions and needs, and know when to bring in People Ops. Build culture and community Run and improve our team rituals, including weekly lunches, team drinks, dinners and company gatherings. Organise one or two company offsites or retreats each year. Create moments that help people connect, celebrate progress and feel they belong, across offices and time zones. Pay attention to the details that make experiences feel personal and inclusive, such as dietary needs, accessibility, preferences and team milestones. Partner with People and Marketing on selected external and brand-building events. Listen and turn feedback into action Build feedback loops (surveys, conversations, informal check-ins) to understand how people experience Dust. Turn what people tell us into concrete recommendations and visible improvements. Define and track simple, useful measures of employee and workplace experience. Communicate clearly and consistently about updates, events, practical information and team norms. Be assertive when needed. Shape our workplaces Make sure our offices are safe, welcoming, functional and ergonomic, and that they reflect how we want people to feel at Dust. Work with our office manager on day-to-day operations: supplies, maintenance, access, equipment and services. Manage workplace vendors, contracts and budget, and look for efficient ways to improve the experience. Spot operational needs early and fix issues before they disrupt anyone. Scale the experience as Dust grows Help shape how our physical, hybrid and digital environments evolve as the company grows. Set up simple, scalable processes and clear ownership across People, IT, Finance and Legal topics. Keep the employee experience personal and high quality without making it bureaucratic. What success looks like After your first 100 days, you will have: Built a smooth, consistent onboarding experience for every new joiner, in every location. Delivered team rituals, events and offsites that strengthen connection and culture. Set up feedback loops and a practical set of metrics that guide People Experience decisions. Created well-run, welcoming offices where operational issues are handled quickly and proactively. Established clear processes and ownership across People, workplace, IT, Finance and Legal. Helped Dust grow its employee experience without it becoming bureaucratic or impersonal. What we are looking for 4+ years of experience in People Operations, People Experience, Workplace Experience in a fast growing, globally distributed environment A proactive generalist who can handle many kinds of work at once without losing sight of the bigger picture. Real ideas, sound judgement and the confidence to improve how things work today. Strong operational ownership, project management skills and attention to detail. Warmth, empathy and a genuine interest in helping people feel comfortable and connected. Clear, direct, thoughtful communication, and discretion with sensitive situations. Confidence working with vendors, budgets and outside partners. The ability to build simple processes that scale, and to keep a high bar for quality while staying pragmatic. Comfort with a fast-moving environment where priorities can change, working on your own while collaborating across the company. Location We're prioritizing building our team with an in-person culture at our offices in Paris, London, San Francisco, and New York because we value the magic that happens when talented people work closely together. We have an office-first culture. Some of the best things about building at Dust are the energy, the fast decisions, and the unexpected conversations that unlock a hard problem, which happen because we are in the same room. Being together is not a formality, it is how we do our best work, and it is something we actively protect. That said, we hire people with strong judgement and we extend that trust to how they manage their time. When working from home makes more sense for what you need to get done that day, we trust you to make that call. Why Dust The models are powerful enough. What's missing is the product layer where AI meets how companies actually work. That's what we're building: the infrastructure that lets any team turn scattered knowledge and tools into coordinated execution with agents they build, own, and run themselves. We use Dust ourselves every day. We get to shape how humans and agents collaborate while solving our own problems with the product we ship. That loop is rare, and it's why we move fast. If you're excited about defining a new category and want to join a determined team of optimists who focus on users, ship fast, and don't take themselves too seriously, we'd love to talk. Even if you don't check every box in our requirements, we encourage you to apply. We value diverse perspectives and backgrounds, and we're more interested in your potential and passion than a perfect match to our checklist. Learn how we think and work.
