Rust Software Engineer
Battalion EnergyAustin, Texas Metropolitan Area10 days ago
Full TimeOn-siteMid
rustreactawslinuxscadaarchitecture+3

Rust Software Engineer Battalion Energy | Austin, Texas About us Battalion Energy is advancing the power infrastructure that AI data centers and critical industries depend on. We've built a next-generation software platform for battery energy storage systems (BESS) and critical power. We're seeing exceptional demand, with major projects under contract and a growing slate of large-scale opportunities. Our energy management system (EMS) unifies supervisory control, power plant and microgrid control, optimization and cloud operations in an extensible platform. Its flexibility and our expertise in battery systems and medium voltage uninterruptible power supply (MV UPS) systems help customers address demanding power requirements. Our wider software offering includes battery modeling, analysis and optimization. With deployments in several countries, we serve front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter storage, solar-plus-storage projects, critical power microgrids and industrial facilities. We're extending the platform into new applications, site and fleet operations, and additional energy markets. Battalion's technical leadership brings deep expertise in energy storage, utility software, remote monitoring, automation and controls. Strong customer relationships and partnerships with battery and power system manufacturers support our growth. We work collaboratively and hold ourselves to high engineering standards. We're expanding across engineering, sales, operations, field service, marketing and business support, with growing offices in Austin, Texas, and Bend, Oregon. Our ambition is to become the world's leading software platform for battery systems, supporting their deployment and operation across an expanding range of markets and applications. The role This role focuses on our EMS and control platform. You will own features that run in major customer deployments, with real autonomy over how they are designed and built. You will work directly with our senior engineers, Chief Engineer and CTO, proposing designs and delivering production capabilities that are reused across customers, sites and markets. Most of your time will be spent designing, writing, testing and reviewing code. You will own features from technical design through implementation, unit tests, code review and release. We will discuss your initial technical focus early in the process. We are not screening on years of experience or job title. We are looking for proficiency in Rust, strong design skills, and the ability to find your footing quickly in a large codebase. You will spend your days in the backend internals of an EMS that controls real hardware at real sites, where correctness counts for more than speed of delivery. It is a demanding environment, and it suits engineers who want real scope and are ready to own it. The technology Rust is the language you will spend your days in. You do not need to have written it professionally, but you do need to be strong in it: comfortable with ownership and borrowing, traits and generics, threaded or async concurrency, and the error handling patterns that hold up in production. Serious personal or open source work counts. The core EMS is built in Rust on real-time Linux. It combines supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), power plant control (PPC), microgrid control and optimization, with an architecture for plugins and applications. You will work on real-time coordination, resilience and integration across battery systems and data center infrastructure. Beyond core controls, you can contribute to equipment integrations, the React interface and Battalion Live, our AWS monitoring and telemetry portal. Integrations span batteries, power electronics, meters, protection relays, microgrid controllers and data center systems. What you will do Design and build production Rust software for the EMS, taking ownership from technical design through implementation, testing and release. Propose and document technical designs, then take them through review with senior engineers and refine them on that feedback. Work directly with project teams implementing customer systems to understand requirements, equipment integration needs and operational constraints. Translate those needs into well-designed, reusable platform features and reliable production code, clarifying tradeoffs and validating the result with project teams. Improve reliability, performance, diagnostics and maintainability as the platform serves more sites and applications. Participate in architecture discussions and code reviews, explain tradeoffs clearly and document decisions that others need to understand. What you bring Real strength in Rust. Enough that you can read our codebase, find your way around it and contribute without a language ramp. Professional Rust is welcome, and serious personal or open source Rust counts. Systems programming depth in areas such as concurrency, memory, timing or failure handling. Strong software design and coding skills, and the judgment to know when a design is right before you start writing. Comfort working in a large and complex codebase. You can read unfamiliar code, build a mental model of it and make changes with confidence. A commitment to writing clear, well-tested software that behaves reliably in production, and curiosity about energy, physical systems and AI data center infrastructure. Experience collaborating with software and project delivery teams to turn complex customer requirements into reliable, maintainable production software. The ability to work independently, seek context when needed and discuss technical disagreements constructively. High agency. You move work forward on your own, you find the context you need, and you raise issues early. An exceptional work ethic. You work quickly and precisely, you take ownership of problems and you follow them through to the end. Thoughtful use of AI development tools, with responsibility for understanding, reviewing and testing the code you ship. We use them in a measured way. Everything that enters our codebase is understood, reviewed and tested by the engineer who ships it. We are not interested in AI slop. Availability to start soon. Experience with BESS, MV UPS or real-time controls is a plus, but not a requirement. Familiarity with real-time Linux, industrial protocols, AWS or React is also helpful. Location and working arrangements This role is remote to start. We expect to move to a hybrid schedule mid-2027, with three days a week in the office and the remaining days available for remote work. Occasional field travel is available based on interest and is not required for this role. Austin, Texas is strongly preferred, and a relocation package is available. You would need to be in Austin by the time we move to hybrid. Compensation and benefits Competitive base salary, bonus and equity, with flexibility in the mix based on the candidate and role. We currently offer a benefits stipend while a benefits package is being established, with availability estimated for January 1, 2027.

About Adelphi Adelphi's Vision is to build the biggest AI Deployment company for National Security, which requires talent that is extremely good at problem solving, gets excited about National Security challenges, and thrives in software factories. We're executing a Mission that (1) Identifies the core bottlenecks in Warfighting, Intelligence and the Enterprise, (2) Assigns top talent with backgrounds in systems and machine learning engineering, and (3) Finds repeatability in solution development to target similar offices across the DoW/IC. The business has 10x'd in under two years and has built trust with the senior most leaders at the Department of War and Intelligence Community. About the Role: As Senior Software Engineer, you will be making technical direction and architectural decisions for the platform and writing a large share of its code. Our core is Rust: a single binary that serves as the AI/API gateway, policy engine, and Kubernetes controller, and a separate Rust ingestion worker that runs in Customer environments. Around it sit Helm charts and Argo CD for a GovCloud EKS cluster, Terraform for the infrastructure underneath, and Python internal tools. This role requires a mix of Rust application development and DevOps/Kubernetes practice. Expect the split to be roughly 70/30 Rust to infrastructure. The right candidate will bring deep experience building, shipping, and supporting mission-critical services and can be productive in this codebase within weeks, not months. Experience in the national security field is a strong plus to best understand Customer requirements and how that will drive the product roadmap. We are an AI-native engineering team. We expect every engineer to leverage LLMs and AI tooling as a core part of how you design, build, ship, and debug software as an integral, daily extension of your workflow. Clearance Requirement: An active U.S. Government Secret clearance is not required. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and be eligible to maintain and upgrade clearances as the role requires. Candidates need to be excited to work for the Defense and Intel Communities, and to apply AI to real applications for Government. Is this you? We are an AI-native engineering team. We expect every engineer to leverage LLMs and AI tooling as a core part of how they design, build, ship, and operate agentic systems that turn frontier-model capability into mission outcomes. Technical Leadership: You have 8+ years of experience with meaningful time at Senior level or above. You own architecture for mission-critical production systems, think in systems and trade-offs, and thrive in ambiguous environments with high ownership. Domain & Tech Stack: You are proficient in Rust and have shipped production services in it (async/tokio, hyper or axum, serde, and a strong instinct for ownership and error handling). You are also proficient with Python (FastAPI, Flask, or Django) and comfortable owning the tooling around a service. Kubernetes experience (Helm, Argo CD, EKS) and AWS are strongly preferred; Terraform is a plus. Experience handling and securing large-scale production data, and experience in government or national security environments, are strong pluses. AI-Native by Default: You use AI coding tools daily and instinctively, prompt-engineer through complex architecture and debug sessions, and maintain a clear-eyed view of AI limitations in high-security contexts. You know when to trust AI-generated output and when to verify. Mission-Driven: You are excited by how AI enables better solutions to hard, long-standing problems like data sharing, and you want to see that work deployed in environments where it matters. Bonus Points: Security engineering: FIPS cryptography, mTLS and SPIFFE workload identity, policy engines, or RMF/ATO compliance work. SRE experience: on-call ownership, observability, and incident response for production Kubernetes services. Infrastructure as code with Terraform and GitOps, including air-gapped or on-premise deployments. Production experience launching agentic services leveraging LLMs, embeddings, and inference.
