Staff Software Engineer, Payroll Platform

GustoSan Francisco, CA - Hybrid (Hybrid)2 days ago
ContractHybridPrincipal$163,000 - $163,000 / Year
rubyarchitectureinsurancepayrollcompliancecompliance+1

About Gusto At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy . AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process. About the Role: We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join Gusto's Payroll Platform team, where you'll build backend product infrastructure that powers payroll experiences across Gusto. This is a fully backend role focused on designing and evolving internal APIs and services used by other product teams to deliver accurate, compliant, and scalable payroll. You'll own complex technical problems end-to-end, partner closely with other engineering teams, and help raise the bar on how payroll capabilities are built and consumed across the company. About the Team: The Payroll Platform team builds the foundational services that make payroll possible at Gusto. Our customers are internal product teams building payroll, time, contractor, and accountant experiences, as well as external partners through Gusto Embedded Payroll. We focus on creating reliable, performant, and well-designed APIs that abstract away payroll complexity and enable teams to move faster with confidence. Our work sits at the intersection of backend product engineering, developer experience, and large-scale systems in a highly regulated domain. Here's what you'll do day-to-day: Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that support core payroll workflows and are consumed by multiple Gusto engineering teams Own a primary domain within the Payroll Platform, taking responsibility for system health, correctness, scalability, and long-term evolution Act as a technical partner to other engineering teams, collaborating closely to understand their needs, guide platform adoption, and co-design solutions that scale across use cases Author and drive architecture and design documents, contributing to technical direction while balancing near-term delivery with long-term platform goals Improve system performance, reliability, and observability as we scale payroll processing for hundreds of thousands of businesses Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data, Compliance, and Operations to deliver compliant and customer-impacting solutions Routinely leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate development, improve code quality, and documentation, and help normalize and spread effective usage across the team.   Here's what we're looking for: 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend development Experience building and scaling internal platforms, shared services, or foundational APIs that support multiple product teams Proven ability to work independently on ambiguous problems, from understanding the business need through delivery and iteration Strong system design skills, including experience with performance optimization, scalability, and reliability in production systems Actively uses AI-assisted development tools (LLMs, Claude Code, Cursor) in daily engineering work and is comfortable helping teams adopt effective, responsible usage Experience collaborating across teams and acting as a technical partner in a product-focused engineering organization Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages; experience with Ruby is strongly preferred but not required Please note that travel to Gusto's Denver office for onboarding is required for this position. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please share with your recruiter. Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $163,000/yr to $204,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $197,000/yr to $247,000/yr for San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above. At Gusto, we don't use titles the traditional way, as a signal of rank or hierarchy. Instead, our titles describe two things at once — your craft (what you do, e.g. Engineering, Design) and your scope of ownership (what you're accountable for) — which is why you'll see something like "Head of X" instead of a rank word like "Director" that tells you neither. Because of this, the title on this posting may look different from what you'd expect based on the scope and seniority of the role, and from how similar roles are typically titled elsewhere. If you have questions about how this role compares to your current title or level, your recruiter can help translate. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.  When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees. Reliable, consistent presence: We expect regular and predictable attendance, whether you're working in-office, hybrid, or fully remote, so that you stay closely connected to your team, customers, and stakeholders in real time and ensure colleagues and customers receive the timely support and responsiveness they deserve. Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.  Gusto is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other applicable legally protected characteristic. Gusto considers qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. Gusto is also committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans in our job application procedures. We want to see our candidates perform to the best of their ability. If you require a medical or religious accommodation at any time throughout your candidate journey, please fill out this form and a member of our team will get in touch with you. We're looking for a seasoned full-stack software engineer to join Gusto's Expansion Experiences team, which helps small business owners discover and adopt more of what Gusto offers, such as upgrading to Plus or Premium, adding 401(k) or health insurance, or finding the features that fit their business. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll operate across the full product lifecycle, shaping experiments and features from early concept through launch and long-term iteration. That means writing clean frontend code, designing and building reliable backend APIs, and bringing real product and customer-experience judgment to the table. We want engineers who ask whether an idea will actually change customer behavior, not just whether it matches the spec. If you're drawn to work that combines technical craft with real-world impact, helping power the livelihoods of millions using Gusto products, join us! Here's what you'll do day-to-day: Design, build, and test customer-facing experiences across recommendations, nurture campaigns, booking flows, and the plan upgrade/retention experience Run structured experiments (A/B tests, phased rollouts) to validate whether a change moves conversion, adoption, or retention, and iterate quickly based on results Design and build reliable backend APIs and data models that support personalization, recommendations, and multi-step customer journeys Mentor other engineers and raise the bar on technical execution, product quality, and responsible use of AI across the team. Most small businesses on Gusto are only using a fraction of what could actually help them run their business: the right plan tier, the right benefit, the right feature at the right moment. We're investing in building more of that expertise directly into the product itself, through recommendations, nurture journeys, and self-serve conversion paths that work alongside the support our Sales team already provides. As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on Expansion Experiences, you'll own outcomes across that whole funnel, from the moment a customer's need surfaces through to the ongoing value of what they adopt. That means real autonomy: shaping the technical approach, partnering with Product, Design, and Data Science to decide what's worth building, calling the shots on what to test now versus later, and flagging the technical investments the team will need before they become urgent. If you want your work to move retained and expansion revenue for a company serving 500,000+ small businesses, this is the team. Here's what you'll do day-to-day: Own outcomes across the full expansion funnel, not just a single surface or feature within it. Shape the technical approach and architecture behind recommendations and conversion journeys so it holds up as a foundation other initiatives can build on. Make sharp scoping calls under a time box: ship the simplest version that proves or disproves an idea, then iterate based on what you learn. Design experiments and use ambiguous or noisy data to decide what's worth scaling versus cutting. Partner independently with Product, Design, and Data Science to help shape the roadmap, not just execute it. Raise the engineering bar through pragmatic technical direction, strong code review, and mentoring engineers around you, scoping out work and delegating it to other engineers on the team once it's ready to hand off. Here's what we're looking for: Successful applicants typically have 10+ years of software development experience, including building and shipping full-stack, customer-facing products at scale. A product-minded engineer who starts from the customer problem and the metric that matters, not just the ticket, and can operate independently across product, design, and data partners. Experience in a growth, lifecycle, or conversion-focused context (onboarding, upsell flows, personalization, or recommendations) is ideal — or a demonstrated ability to think this way even without the exact domain background. Demonstrated ability to move quickly and execute with high quality — someone who ships, measures, and iterates rather than waiting for perfect certainty. Experience owning multi-quarter initiatives end to end, from early concept through measurable business impact. Comfort navigating ambiguity and leading peers through influence, without relying on formal authority. Experience with large-scale refactors, performance and reliability work, and a strong sense of technical ownership over your product area. A track record of mentoring engineers and helping teams scale their impact, including knowing when to delegate scoped work to other engineers rather than carrying it yourself. A track record of spotting technical or product opportunities before being asked, and building the case to prioritize them. Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities. Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code. Please note that travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required for this position. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please share with your recruiter. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees. Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at 191,000–240,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and 225,000–275,000 for San Francisco & New York. Staff Product Manager, Atlas Infinite
Full TimeHybridPrincipal$151,000 - $151,000 / Year
goawsazuregoogle cloudmongodbmental health+10

The Staff Product Manager is an Individual Contributor (IC) product leader responsible for a broad platform surface for Atlas Infinite at MongoDB. Atlas Infinite is the largest architectural innovation in MongoDB Atlas ever, purpose-built to handle today's speed and scale of development and demand.  In this position, you will own and solve end-to-end problems around the user experience and database experience of Atlas Infinite, including but limited to feature discovery, activation, monetization, and retention. You will see patterns, opportunities, and risks across areas, own cross-team product and architectural trade-offs, establish reusable standards for PM craft, and align senior stakeholders around multi-year bets. You have deep knowledge of cloud database platforms, distributed data systems, and enterprise product development. You will partner closely with cross-functional engineering leaders, product peers, and executive stakeholders to drive outcomes across organizational boundaries, guiding a portfolio spanning Atlas Infinite's disaggregated compute and storage architecture, production workload readiness, migration and Atlas interoperability, and the new customer experiences this architecture may make possible. You will not inherit a closed list of future features: part of your mandate is to discover opportunities we have not yet articulated and challenge assumptions about which problems matter most. With AWS public preview now live, you will help turn real workload evidence into a credible path to GA and subsequent releases, in close partnership with the existing team. This role can be based out of a MongoDB office or remotely in the United States. Responsibilities Interlinked Vision & Multi-Year Bets: Set and champion a product vision across Atlas Infinite's capabilities, while actively discovering opportunities that are not on today's roadmap or fit any single team's remit. Explore what decoupled compute and storage could make possible for developers, enterprises, and emerging AI workloads; use hypotheses, customer evidence, prototypes, and market signals to uncover needs we have not yet named. Branching, on-demand compute, and instant recovery are examples of possible bets. Make the case for investment and prioritization, including build-vs-buy considerations, and distinguish exploratory vision from release commitments Cross-Team Execution: Along with program management, own execution health across workstreams, negotiating sequencing, scope, and resource trade-offs with engineering leaders and peer PMs where you have no direct authority. Ensure preview-to-GA readiness, roadmaps, and dependencies across database, storage, Atlas platform, migration, backup, security, and cloud infrastructure teams are aligned and connect to company objectives Execution & Research Standards: Establish lightweight operating practices and shared customer/market research frameworks that make workload qualification, customer-representative testing, win/loss analysis, launch readiness, and post-launch learning consistent across the portfolio. Use data to drive decisions without overburdening delivery teams Product Health: Resolve complex post-launch escalations when the root cause spans architecture, performance, migration, observability, supportability, or unclear ownership. Turn customer and operational signals into systemic product fixes rather than one-off workarounds Customer Discovery: Identify needs and competitive dynamics that cut across product areas. Look beyond requests from today's customers to discover emerging jobs-to-be-done, surprising uses of the architecture, and reasons customers do not choose MongoDB at all. Combine interviews, workload and pricing evidence, product analytics, field feedback, and experiments to test known hypotheses and uncover unknowns; reorient the roadmap when the evidence warrants it Outbound & GTM: Partner with product marketing, pricing, sales, solutions architecture, customer success, documentation, and support on high-stakes customer engagements, product positioning, and omni-channel marketing. Establish ideal customer profile; ensure claims and migration guidance match demonstrated capabilities; translate successful adoption and enablement approaches into shared playbooks Executive Alignment: Synthesize customer experience, technical readiness, adoption, and commercial impact into clear, confident product stories for senior leadership. Surface cross-area risks and progress early, including trade-offs between new-workload growth, customer savings, and changes to existing Atlas usage Mentorship: Mentor PMs across the area, sharing frameworks for cross-team alignment, customer evidence, technical trade-offs, multi-year bets, and leadership communication Qualifications 8+ years of product management or equivalent product leadership experience, with a track record personally shaping strategy and outcomes for complex technical platforms across multiple teams, rather than only coordinating delivery Strong technical fluency in cloud databases, distributed data systems, storage infrastructure, developer experiences, or an adjacent developer platform. Able to reason with engineers about architecture, performance, availability, data movement, and trade-offs without needing to be the system designer A demonstrated ability to discover opportunities beyond the current roadmap: connect technical possibilities to unmet customer needs, formulate and test hypotheses, notice surprising patterns, and change direction when evidence challenges the original thesis Experience taking a complex product from early adoption toward dependable, broader use while protecting space for longer-term innovation; able to make explicit trade-offs among customer trust, technical readiness, speed, and investment Proven ability to influence without authority, negotiating sequencing and resource trade-offs across partner teams with competing priorities Commercial and analytical judgment: able to assess workload-level value, adoption and usage evidence, competitive alternatives, pricing and unit economics, and the impact of a new product on an existing portfolio. Comfortable with build-vs-buy questions where relevant Ability to raise the quality of customer discovery and product decision-making across teams through useful shared methods and mentorship, without mistaking more process for better outcomes Exceptional communication skills: able to explain a technical and commercial thesis, its uncertainties, and the evidence that would change your mind to engineers, customers, executives, and go-to-market partners Success Measures In 3 months you will have built a shared picture of which workloads Atlas Infinite serves well today, where customers struggle, what must be true for broader adoption, and what remains unknown. You will have clarified ownership with peer PMs and engineering, established baseline measures, and identified the highest-value questions to investigate In 6 months you will have influenced consequential roadmap and GA-readiness decisions with customer-representative evidence; articulated a compelling, revisable view of where Infinite can create distinctive customer value beyond GA; and built a learning agenda with clear tests and decision points for both known bets and newly emerging opportunities In 12 months the portfolio will show measurable progress against its established baselines for qualified adoption, customer experience, and readiness for broader workloads. Important bets will have advanced, changed, or been stopped for explicit reasons; cross-team investments will have produced customer value; and the team will be better equipped to recognize and act on opportunities that were not visible at the start of the year About MongoDB MongoDB is built for change, empowering our customers and our people to innovate at the speed of the market. This role can be based out of a MongoDB office or remotely in Canada.
