Who are we and why should you join us? BetterHelp is on a mission to champion the well-being in all of us. We're working to make mental healthcare more accessible, so more people can get the support they need, when they need it. As the world's largest online therapy service, we've connected millions of people with a network of more than 30,000 licensed therapists-- and we're not stopping there. As the unmet need for mental health services continues to grow, BetterHelp is committed to being part of the solution. As a Full Stack Software Engineer at BetterHelp, you'll join a diverse team of clinicians, engineers, product pros, creatives, marketers, and business leaders who share a passion for expanding access to therapy. You'll have the opportunity to make an immediate impact, grow alongside the business, and do meaningful work alongside people who care deeply about what we're building together. What are we looking for? We're looking for a talented software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, learning continuously, and building products that make a meaningful difference. This role is ideal for someone who has delivered multiple challenging projects, takes pride in writing thoughtful, maintainable code, and enjoys both mentoring and learning from teammates. You'll join an engineering culture that values ownership, curiosity, collaboration, and sound technical judgment. We embrace modern engineering practices and thoughtfully adopt new technologies, including AI, to help engineers focus on solving hard problems while keeping human expertise at the center of every decision. What technologies will you work with? We use a mix of established and modern technologies to support a platform serving millions of users. As our products evolve, we're continually improving our architecture, modernizing portions of our codebase, and evaluating technologies that help us build secure, reliable, and scalable software. Backend: Linux, nginx, Laravel (PHP), MySQL, Redis Frontend: React, Next.js, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS/SASS Existing technologies you may encounter as we modernize the platform: Twig, Bootstrap, jQuery We do not expect candidates to have worked with every technology in our environment. We value strong software engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to learn unfamiliar systems. What will you do? You will develop end to end, owning features from technical design and development through deployment, monitoring, and continued improvement. You will write clean, secure, readable, maintainable, and scalable code. You will collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and other cross-functional partners. You will design, integrate, and build internal and external APIs. You will develop new products and features while improving and modernizing existing systems. You will write and optimize SQL queries and design relational database schemas. You will create and maintain complex backend services and algorithms. You will profile, troubleshoot, and optimize new and legacy code. You will build experiences that work across mobile, tablet, and desktop environments. You will contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and engineering practices that improve quality, reliability, security, and developer experience. You will ship thoughtfully and frequently in an agile environment with continuous deployment. You will care about our product, mission, and long-term success, well beyond checking off development tasks. You will thoughtfully use approved AI-assisted development tools to reduce repetitive work, explore solutions, and improve productivity while applying your own engineering judgment to architecture, implementation, security, privacy, and code quality. Engineers remain accountable for every technical decision. What will you NOT do? You will NOT worry about funding. We have startup energy, with the support and resources of our parent company, Teladoc Health. You will NOT be limited to a narrow set of responsibilities. We encourage employees to contribute ideas, develop new skills, collaborate across teams, and explore opportunities that support both their growth and the growing needs of the business. You will NOT be expected to navigate a culture driven by ego or unnecessary hierarchy. We value respectful collaboration, thoughtful debate, and teammates who are committed to shared success. You will NOT be expected to sacrifice your well-being to make an impact. We work hard and hold ourselves to high standards, all while supporting sustainable ways of working. You will NOT have to wonder why your work matters. The work we do here helps to expand access to mental health care and supports people seeking help when they need it. Can I work remotely? Yes. EDB delivers the confidence of up to 99.999% high availability with mission critical capabilities built in such as security, compliance controls, and observability. For more information, visit www.enterprisedb.com The Role: You'll lead Security Operations and Security Engineering at EDB, reporting to the CISO as a trusted member of the security leadership team. You own how we detect, respond, and (increasingly) prevent. That means the people, the platforms, and the playbooks behind threat detection, incident response, and the engineering that makes them scale. You'll be a peer to the leaders across security, including Governance, Risk & Compliance and Application Security & Vulnerability Management, and you'll help shape the direction of the broader InfoSec organization. You'll also partner closely with peer leaders in IT and Product, because most of the controls we define live in their systems, pipelines, and roadmaps. This is a scaling role. The business is growing fast, and so is everything security has to cover: more products, more cloud, more acquired companies and environments to bring up to a common standard. You'll decide what to build, what to automate, and where to add people, so the program grows ahead of the risk instead of behind it. As EDB grows, so will the scope and opportunity of the role. One leader owns both Security Operations and Security Engineering on purpose: the best incident is the one that never happens. What we learn from detection and response feeds directly into the engineering of preventive controls, so we move from detecting bad things to making them impossible, and from manual triage to automation and agents that give analysts leverage. If you want to build that, and grow a program and a team as the company grows, this is the seat. What your impact will be: Incident response end to end, from intake and severity model through after-action and improvement, including partnership with Legal on investigations Detection engineering, threat hunting, and the SIEM, EDR, SOAR, and cloud security platforms that support them Security Engineering strategy and delivery, with the goal of preventing incidents rather than responding to them: preventive controls, least privilege, and identity assurance across employees, contractors, and build systems The insider threat program, built with HR, Legal, and IT Automation and agentic AI that extends analyst capacity (the analyst always owns the decision) Security integration of acquired companies and new environments into EDB's standards Close partnership with IT and Product leadership to build preventive controls into the platforms, pipelines, and products they own, plus security input to third-party risk and device posture with GRC Scaling the program: the org design, operating rhythms, roadmap, budget, and vendor strategy that let coverage grow with the business without growing linearly with headcount What you will bring: 5+ years of management experience leading security teams 7+ years of hands-on experience in security operations, incident response, detection, or security engineering A track record of scaling a security function through rapid growth (hiring, automation, and operating discipline), not just running one Strategic thinking that goes beyond the immediate scope of the role The ability to translate technical risk into business impact for executives, legal, customers, and your IT and Product counterparts Comfort in a global, remote-first environment with flexible schedules and on-call responsibilities What will give you an edge: Hands-on scripting or automation experience (Python, Go, etc.) Experience applying AI or agent-based automation to security workflows Cloud security experience and background in M&A security integration Experience building an insider threat or identity assurance program EDB is committed to supporting our employees' overall well being by offering a range of benefits and resources to promote a healthy work-life balance and wellness. We provide access to CuraLinc to aid employees in health and wellness tips and practices, as well as Wellness Fridays extending to December 2026!
