GustoSan Francisco, CA - Hybrid (Hybrid)yesterday

About Gusto At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy . AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process. We're looking for a seasoned full-stack software engineer to join Gusto's Expansion Experiences team, which helps small business owners discover and adopt more of what Gusto offers, such as upgrading to Plus or Premium, adding 401(k) or health insurance, or finding the features that fit their business. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll operate across the full product lifecycle, shaping experiments and features from early concept through launch and long-term iteration. That means writing clean frontend code, designing and building reliable backend APIs, and bringing real product and customer-experience judgment to the table. We want engineers who ask whether an idea will actually change customer behavior, not just whether it matches the spec. If you're drawn to work that combines technical craft with real-world impact, helping power the livelihoods of millions using Gusto products, join us! Here's what you'll do day-to-day: Design, build, and test customer-facing experiences across recommendations, nurture campaigns, booking flows, and the plan upgrade/retention experience Run structured experiments (A/B tests, phased rollouts) to validate whether a change moves conversion, adoption, or retention, and iterate quickly based on results Design and build reliable backend APIs and data models that support personalization, recommendations, and multi-step customer journeys Mentor other engineers and raise the bar on technical execution, product quality, and responsible use of AI across the team. Collaborate with our Product Management, Design, Data, and Platform Engineering teams to understand customer pain points, come up with solutions, and then prototype, iterate, and launch Here's what we're looking for: Successful applicants typically have 8+ years of software development experience A product-minded engineer who starts from the customer problem and the metric that matters, not just the ticket, and is comfortable proposing a different approach when the data calls for it Experience building scalable solutions that eliminate customer pain, ideally in a growth, lifecycle, or conversion-focused context (onboarding, upsell flows, personalization, or recommendations) — or demonstrated ability to think this way Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and make measurable customer impact at scale Comfort designing and interpreting experiments, and working with ambiguous or evolving requirements Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact Experience with large-scale refactors, performance and reliability issues, and a strong sense of ownership over all aspects of your product area Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities Others: Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails, React, GraphQL, and TypeScript Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders Please note that travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required for this position. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please share with your recruiter. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees. Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at 164,000–204,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and 199,000–247,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above. At Gusto, we don't use titles the traditional way, as a signal of rank or hierarchy. Instead, our titles describe two things at once — your craft (what you do, e.g. Engineering, Design) and your scope of ownership (what you're accountable for) — which is why you'll see something like "Head of X" instead of a rank word like "Director" that tells you neither. Because of this, the title on this posting may look different from what you'd expect based on the scope and seniority of the role, and from how similar roles are typically titled elsewhere. If you have questions about how this role compares to your current title or level, your recruiter can help translate. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. Most small businesses on Gusto are only using a fraction of what could actually help them run their business: the right plan tier, the right benefit, the right feature at the right moment. We're investing in building more of that expertise directly into the product itself, through recommendations, nurture journeys, and self-serve conversion paths that work alongside the support our Sales team already provides. As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on Expansion Experiences, you'll own outcomes across that whole funnel, from the moment a customer's need surfaces through to the ongoing value of what they adopt. That means real autonomy: shaping the technical approach, partnering with Product, Design, and Data Science to decide what's worth building, calling the shots on what to test now versus later, and flagging the technical investments the team will need before they become urgent. If you want your work to move retained and expansion revenue for a company serving 500,000+ small businesses, this is the team. Here's what you'll do day-to-day: Own outcomes across the full expansion funnel, not just a single surface or feature within it. Shape the technical approach and architecture behind recommendations and conversion journeys so it holds up as a foundation other initiatives can build on. Make sharp scoping calls under a time box: ship the simplest version that proves or disproves an idea, then iterate based on what you learn. Design experiments and use ambiguous or noisy data to decide what's worth scaling versus cutting. Partner independently with Product, Design, and Data Science to help shape the roadmap, not just execute it. Raise the engineering bar through pragmatic technical direction, strong code review, and mentoring engineers around you, scoping out work and delegating it to other engineers on the team once it's ready to hand off. Here's what we're looking for: Successful applicants typically have 10+ years of software development experience, including building and shipping full-stack, customer-facing products at scale. A product-minded engineer who starts from the customer problem and the metric that matters, not just the ticket, and can operate independently across product, design, and data partners. Experience in a growth, lifecycle, or conversion-focused context (onboarding, upsell flows, personalization, or recommendations) is ideal — or a demonstrated ability to think this way even without the exact domain background. Demonstrated ability to move quickly and execute with high quality — someone who ships, measures, and iterates rather than waiting for perfect certainty. Experience owning multi-quarter initiatives end to end, from early concept through measurable business impact. Comfort navigating ambiguity and leading peers through influence, without relying on formal authority. Experience with large-scale refactors, performance and reliability work, and a strong sense of technical ownership over your product area. A track record of mentoring engineers and helping teams scale their impact, including knowing when to delegate scoped work to other engineers rather than carrying it yourself. A track record of spotting technical or product opportunities before being asked, and building the case to prioritize them. Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities. Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code. Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders. Nice to Have: Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails, React, GraphQL, and TypeScript. Please note that travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required for this position. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please share with your recruiter. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. What you'll do You will lead the systems, data, and operations that turn demand into qualified sales conversations and help Marketing make better investment decisions. Your operating mandate runs from lead capture through qualified meetings; your measurement mandate extends through pipeline and closed revenue. Partnering with the Senior Director of Growth Marketing, you will build the team and set the technical roadmap for a more reliable, scalable funnel across enterprise sales and self-serve motions, including Brex and Capital One integrations. In your first year, you will establish baselines and targets with Growth Marketing, Revenue Operations, and SDR leadership to improve meaningful follow-up, routing accuracy, qualified meetings, and meeting-to-opportunity conversion, while building trusted funnel data and faster campaign delivery. Where you'll work This role will be based in one of our hubs: San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Salt Lake City, or Vancouver. We are a hybrid environment that combines the energy and connections of being in the office with the benefits and flexibility of working from home. We currently require a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a perk, we also have up to four weeks per year of fully remote work! Responsibilities Own the end-to-end marketing funnel from demand capture through sales handoff, including qualification, enrichment, scoring, routing, automation, and measurement. Partner with SDR, RevOps, Product, Engineering, and Data Science to improve funnel throughput, speed-to-lead, conversion, and reliability. Design scalable workflows across sales-led and self-serve motions, including emerging Capital One lead sources. Own the marketing technology ecosystem and integrations across Marketo, Salesforce, LeanData, web/CMS, analytics, advertising, and other GTM platforms. Set the architecture and operating standards that ensure systems are scalable, reliable, and connected. Lead major platform improvements and evaluate new capabilities, including CDP and AI-enabled workflows. Own the quality and governance of marketing and prospect data, including identity, enrichment, segmentation, taxonomy, and attribution. Establish trusted funnel and performance measurement in partnership with RevOps, Finance, Data, and Engineering. Translate data into recommendations that improve marketing efficiency, sales handoffs, and investment decisions. Lead and develop the Marketing Operations team while establishing clear priorities, operating rhythms, service levels, and accountability. Build scalable processes for intake, prioritization, capacity planning, documentation, and execution. Serve as a highly autonomous thought partner to Growth Marketing leadership and drive alignment across Marketing, Sales, RevOps, Product, Engineering, and Finance. Requirements 8+ years in marketing operations, revenue operations, or growth operations, including 3+ years leading and developing a team. Measurable improvements to lead-to-meeting conversion, with experience supporting both enterprise sales and self-serve or product-led motions. Deep hands-on architecture experience in Marketo or an equivalent marketing automation platform, plus strong Salesforce fluency and shared platform ownership with Revenue Operations. Experience designing scalable lifecycle, scoring, routing, campaign taxonomy, and data governance practices. Strong measurement judgment, including understanding attribution limitations, plus SQL and BI fluency to investigate performance independently. A track record of using pipeline or forecast models to inform decisions and aligning cross-functional partners on execution. Experience managing martech vendors and increasing team capacity through automation and reusable processes. Experience running marketing systems as production infrastructure, including monitoring, incident response, and change control on revenue-facing workflows. Experience running intake and prioritization for a team serving many internal stakeholders, with capacity planning that holds up under pressure. Bonus points Experience in fintech, financial services, or another regulated environment. Technical partnership with Product and Engineering on signup flows or identity resolution. Experience with holdouts, incrementality testing, or media mix modeling. Experience with marketing financial planning and reporting. AI or agent-assisted workflows with measurable results. Hands-on experience with LeanData, Qualified, Hex, a customer data platform, or integration and workflow tools such as Retool. Compensation The expected salary range for this role is $185,320 - $231,650. However, the starting base pay will depend on a number of factors including the candidate's location, skills, experience, market demands, and internal pay parity. Depending on the position offered, equity and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package. Brex LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Capital One, N.A. The Staff Product Manager is an Individual Contributor (IC) product leader responsible for a broad platform surface for Atlas Infinite at MongoDB. Atlas Infinite is the largest architectural innovation in MongoDB Atlas ever, purpose-built to handle today's speed and scale of development and demand.  In this position, you will own and solve end-to-end problems around the user experience and database experience of Atlas Infinite, including but limited to feature discovery, activation, monetization, and retention. You will see patterns, opportunities, and risks across areas, own cross-team product and architectural trade-offs, establish reusable standards for PM craft, and align senior stakeholders around multi-year bets. You have deep knowledge of cloud database platforms, distributed data systems, and enterprise product development. You will partner closely with cross-functional engineering leaders, product peers, and executive stakeholders to drive outcomes across organizational boundaries, guiding a portfolio spanning Atlas Infinite's disaggregated compute and storage architecture, production workload readiness, migration and Atlas interoperability, and the new customer experiences this architecture may make possible. You will not inherit a closed list of future features: part of your mandate is to discover opportunities we have not yet articulated and challenge assumptions about which problems matter most. With AWS public preview now live, you will help turn real workload evidence into a credible path to GA and subsequent releases, in close partnership with the existing team. This role can be based out of a MongoDB office or remotely in the United States. Responsibilities Interlinked Vision & Multi-Year Bets: Set and champion a product vision across Atlas Infinite's capabilities, while actively discovering opportunities that are not on today's roadmap or fit any single team's remit. Explore what decoupled compute and storage could make possible for developers, enterprises, and emerging AI workloads; use hypotheses, customer evidence, prototypes, and market signals to uncover needs we have not yet named. Branching, on-demand compute, and instant recovery are examples of possible bets. Make the case for investment and prioritization, including build-vs-buy considerations, and distinguish exploratory vision from release commitments Cross-Team Execution: Along with program management, own execution health across workstreams, negotiating sequencing, scope, and resource trade-offs with engineering leaders and peer PMs where you have no direct authority. Ensure preview-to-GA readiness, roadmaps, and dependencies across database, storage, Atlas platform, migration, backup, security, and cloud infrastructure teams are aligned and connect to company objectives Execution & Research Standards: Establish lightweight operating practices and shared customer/market research frameworks that make workload qualification, customer-representative testing, win/loss analysis, launch readiness, and post-launch learning consistent across the portfolio. Use data to drive decisions without overburdening delivery teams Product Health: Resolve complex post-launch escalations when the root cause spans architecture, performance, migration, observability, supportability, or unclear ownership. Turn customer and operational signals into systemic product fixes rather than one-off workarounds Customer Discovery: Identify needs and competitive dynamics that cut across product areas. Look beyond requests from today's customers to discover emerging jobs-to-be-done, surprising uses of the architecture, and reasons customers do not choose MongoDB at all. Combine interviews, workload and pricing evidence, product analytics, field feedback, and experiments to test known hypotheses and uncover unknowns; reorient the roadmap when the evidence warrants it Outbound & GTM: Partner with product marketing, pricing, sales, solutions architecture, customer success, documentation, and support on high-stakes customer engagements, product positioning, and omni-channel marketing. Establish ideal customer profile; ensure claims and migration guidance match demonstrated capabilities; translate successful adoption and enablement approaches into shared playbooks Executive Alignment: Synthesize customer experience, technical readiness, adoption, and commercial impact into clear, confident product stories for senior leadership. Surface cross-area risks and progress early, including trade-offs between new-workload growth, customer savings, and changes to existing Atlas usage Mentorship: Mentor PMs across the area, sharing frameworks for cross-team alignment, customer evidence, technical trade-offs, multi-year bets, and leadership communication Qualifications 8+ years of product management or equivalent product leadership experience, with a track record personally shaping strategy and outcomes for complex technical platforms across multiple teams, rather than only coordinating delivery Strong technical fluency in cloud databases, distributed data systems, storage infrastructure, developer experiences, or an adjacent developer platform. Able to reason with engineers about architecture, performance, availability, data movement, and trade-offs without needing to be the system designer A demonstrated ability to discover opportunities beyond the current roadmap: connect technical possibilities to unmet customer needs, formulate and test hypotheses, notice surprising patterns, and change direction when evidence challenges the original thesis Experience taking a complex product from early adoption toward dependable, broader use while protecting space for longer-term innovation; able to make explicit trade-offs among customer trust, technical readiness, speed, and investment Proven ability to influence without authority, negotiating sequencing and resource trade-offs across partner teams with competing priorities Commercial and analytical judgment: able to assess workload-level value, adoption and usage evidence, competitive alternatives, pricing and unit economics, and the impact of a new product on an existing portfolio. Comfortable with build-vs-buy questions where relevant Ability to raise the quality of customer discovery and product decision-making across teams through useful shared methods and mentorship, without mistaking more process for better outcomes Exceptional communication skills: able to explain a technical and commercial thesis, its uncertainties, and the evidence that would change your mind to engineers, customers, executives, and go-to-market partners Success Measures In 3 months you will have built a shared picture of which workloads Atlas Infinite serves well today, where customers struggle, what must be true for broader adoption, and what remains unknown. You will have clarified ownership with peer PMs and engineering, established baseline measures, and identified the highest-value questions to investigate In 6 months you will have influenced consequential roadmap and GA-readiness decisions with customer-representative evidence; articulated a compelling, revisable view of where Infinite can create distinctive customer value beyond GA; and built a learning agenda with clear tests and decision points for both known bets and newly emerging opportunities In 12 months the portfolio will show measurable progress against its established baselines for qualified adoption, customer experience, and readiness for broader workloads. Important bets will have advanced, changed, or been stopped for explicit reasons; cross-team investments will have produced customer value; and the team will be better equipped to recognize and act on opportunities that were not visible at the start of the year About MongoDB MongoDB is built for change, empowering our customers and our people to innovate at the speed of the market. At MongoDB, we're looking for a technically accomplished Solutions Architect who thrives on solving complex problems, understanding how systems work, and helping customers make better architectural decisions. You'll work with established MongoDB customers running production applications, applying hands-on expertise across databases, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, application architecture, and emerging AI technologies. As part of a globally distributed Solutions Architecture team, you'll engage with customers across multiple EMEA markets rather than being dedicated to a small number of accounts. This regional reach offers exposure to diverse industries, technologies, and architectural challenges, with opportunities to recognize patterns, build trusted technical relationships, and influence decisions across a broad customer landscape. You'll have the autonomy to drive meaningful technical engagements while drawing on the expertise of specialists and colleagues worldwide. We value architects who look beyond the immediate problem, investigate underlying causes, challenge assumptions, and bring informed technical perspectives to customer conversations. You'll help customers optimize what they run today while influencing the architectures and applications they build tomorrow. We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in Dublin for our hybrid working model. What You'll Do Optimize Production Architectures: Analyze MongoDB workloads, query execution, indexing, data models, cluster configurations, and resource utilization. Identify performance bottlenecks, scalability constraints, and cost optimization opportunities Engineer for Resilience and Scale: Evaluate distributed architectures, replication, sharding, high availability, backup and recovery, and disaster recovery strategies. Help customers understand technical trade-offs and design for evolving production requirements Think Beyond the Database: Assess how MongoDB interacts with application services, APIs, networking, security, cloud infrastructure, and adjacent technologies. Identify opportunities to simplify architectures, reduce technical debt, and improve operational efficiency Shape Future-State Architecture: Guide technical discussions around application modernization, cloud-native design, and AI-powered applications. Explore architectural considerations involving Search, Vector Search, RAG, intelligent agents, and their integration with operational data Lead Technical Discovery and Design: Engage developers, architects, and engineering leaders to investigate complex challenges, analyze technical evidence, assess architectural trade-offs, and develop actionable recommendations. Provide hands-on technical investigation and targeted validation to guide decisions, rather than owning ongoing support cases or implementation projects Improve How Customers Build and Operate: Look beyond technology to understand development workflows, operational practices, team capabilities, and architectural ownership. Identify opportunities to improve how applications are developed, deployed, and managed Build Trusted Technical Relationships: Establish credibility through technical expertise, curiosity, and sound judgment. Proactively identify architectural risks and opportunities, challenge assumptions constructively, and collaborate with MongoDB Technical Support, Professional Services, and product specialists when deeper troubleshooting or implementation expertise is required What We're Looking For Required Qualifications 5+ years of experience in software engineering, solutions architecture, technical consulting, or related technical roles, including customer-facing technical engagement 2+ years of professional programming or scripting experience using languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript/ Node.js , C#, C++, or SQL Strong understanding of database technologies, distributed systems, modern application architectures, and high availability Practical experience investigating technical issues, analyzing performance, and evaluating architectural trade-offs Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure and application architectures on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Ability to engage confidently with developers, architects, and technical leaders, translating complex technical findings into clear recommendations Intellectual curiosity, strong problem-solving skills, initiative, and the ability to independently drive technical engagements Preferred Qualifications Experience with MongoDB, Atlas, NoSQL, or relational database technologies Familiarity with query optimization, indexing, data modeling, replication, and database scaling Exposure to Kubernetes, Kafka, microservices, APIs, event-driven architectures, or application modernization Understanding of AI application patterns, Vector Search, RAG, or agentic systems About MongoDB MongoDB is built for change, empowering our customers and our people to innovate at the speed of the market. MongoDB's Global Security Organization (GSO) is looking for a Principal Security Engineer. The GSO secures MongoDB's products, infrastructure, and the trust our customers place in us — spanning product security, corporate security, and risk, and working across engineering, go-to-market, and corporate development to keep security moving at the same speed as the business. The Principal Security Engineer will serve as a senior technical anchor for the team. This is a deep individual-contributor role that will stay hands-on with hard security and architecture problems, form sharp independent opinions, and know how to debate, align, and commit once GSO has made a call.   Key topic areas will include collaborating with our product teams to ensure identity and permission models meet customer needs for our new autonomous agent platform and working with integration security teams to push the envelope on automated detection, reproduction, and remediation of security vulnerabilities via AI.  What we need here is depth, judgment, and the ability to build up the bench of senior technical talent around you. This role can be based out of our NYC or Seattle office or remotely in the North America region. Responsibilities Maintain real technical depth in security and in MongoDB's product architecture — compute, network, and storage — deep enough to evaluate actual risk rather than apply generic best practice Form independent, well-reasoned opinions on security and architecture decisions, and voice them even when they cut against consensus or a leader's default plan Push teams to move faster when process or over-engineering is introducing complexity without reducing risk — and push teams to slow down when GTM pressure is outrunning a clear-eyed view of the risk Debate hard, then align, then commit: help the org land on the right call, then execute on it Seed and grow a working community of senior ICs embedded in security operations, product security, and enterprise security — connecting people, sharing knowledge, and creating the venues (formal or informal) for that to happen Lead time-boxed, high-stakes, cross-functional engagements such as M&A security due diligence and partner risk assessments, often with incomplete information and a short runway Draw on your own expertise where it applies, and quickly figure out how to close knowledge gaps elsewhere — staying accountable for the outcome either way Requirements 12+ years of experience in security engineering, software engineering, or a related discipline, including senior individual-contributor or technical-lead experience Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience Deep, credible technical expertise in security, plus working depth across compute, network, and storage architecture A track record of forming and defending independent technical positions, along with the judgment to know when to stop debating and commit Experience influencing without formal authority, including with management and cross-functional partners, in both directions — accelerating and slowing down decisions Comfort owning ambiguous, deadline-driven work such as M&A diligence or partner risk reviews, and being accountable for the result even without the full picture upfront A genuine interest in mentoring and connecting other senior engineers, without needing a management title to do it Don't feel that you meet all of the requirements? We encourage you to apply anyway — studies show strong candidates sometimes rule themselves out prematurely. MongoDB has a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and high-performing environment, and we want to keep improving our ability to deliver for customers. Nice to Haves Direct experience leading M&A security due diligence or partner/vendor risk assessments Background spanning multiple layers of the stack (e.g., network and storage, or application and infrastructure security) A history of building or growing technical communities of practice Success in This Role Means Leadership trusts your technical judgment on the hardest, most ambiguous calls Your willingness to disagree — in either direction, faster or slower — makes decisions better, not just louder A real community of senior security talent has formed around you in GSO About MongoDB MongoDB is built for change, empowering our customers and our people to innovate at the speed of the market.
