At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most. The Observability team builds the platform every Affirm engineer relies on to understand the behavior and performance of our systems. Our platform ingests 200+ TB/day of metrics, logs, and traces from hundreds of services across 80+ Kubernetes clusters, and when a user's checkout fails, our data is how engineers find out why. Over the next year, we're moving to wide events, with one context-rich event per request, improving the signal-to-noise ratio to make debugging faster. We're also introducing log sampling and building observability best practices into agentic development and code review, so that AI-assisted code is well instrumented by default. We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to be the technical lead for Observability. You'll spend most of your time hands-on while defining the roadmap, driving cross-functional projects, mentoring a team of six engineers, and partnering closely with infrastructure and product teams. What You'll Do · You will own the architecture of Affirm's telemetry pipeline, balancing reliability, query performance, and cost at 200+ TB/day. · You will design log sampling strategies that significantly reduce volume and cost without losing the signal engineers need during incidents. · You will shape how observability fits into agentic development, so that AI coding agents and code review catch instrumentation gaps before code ships. · You will be responsible for setting technical strategy for your team on a year-long time scale, and help your team tie it together with critical, business-impacting projects. · You will collaborate across teams in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design & analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks and trade-offs are well understood and managed. · You will act as a force-multiplier for your team through your definition and advocacy of technical solutions and operational processes. · You take ownership of your team's operations and availability by ensuring you have the right monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, polcities, testing and alerting in place to support "keep the lights on" & on-call efforts. · You will foster a culture of quality and ownership on your team by setting code review and design standards for your team, and advocating for them beyond your team through your writing and tech talks. · You will help develop talent on your team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example. What We Look For · You have 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin. · You have an extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, Flink and Kubernetes. · You have built or operated high-volume telemetry systems (metrics, logs, and/or traces) using technologies like OpenTelemetry, Kafka, and Terraform. · You have a well-informed point of view on modern observability practices such as structured and wide events, sampling, cardinality management, and SLOs. · You have driven adoption of a platform standard across many engineering teams, through both tooling and engagement. · You have experience delivering major features, system components or deprecating existing functionality in a system through the definition of a technical and execution plan. You write high quality code that is easily understood and used by others. · You thrive in ambiguity, and are comfortable moving from low level language idioms all the way to the architecture of large systems to understand how they work. · Your growth and impact trajectory demonstrates that you have mastered gathering and iterating on feedback from your engineering and cross-functional peers. · You have strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with our global engineering team. About the role This is a high-visibility opportunity to own the health, evolution, and strategic value of a member operations ecosystem at Chime's only onshore customer operations center. You will lead as one part Operator (running the operations with rigor), one part Strategist (improving the operations by challenging what exists), and one part Influencer (informing the business by turning frontline signals into company decisions). The role carries real executive presence: you'll be the person in the room translating what's happening on the frontline into decisions senior leaders act on. This is an on-site role (location TBD - Austin, San Antonio) — you'll be embedded with the operation you own, not managing it from a distance, and you'll serve as a cultural ambassador for Chime within the partnership (BPO) and a highly effective motivator of front line staff. You will play a hands-on role in daily partner governance, business reviews, escalation management, and operational initiatives that improve frontline execution and member outcomes. In this role, you can expect to Run the Operations Own performance governance for assigned Partner/BPO operations, including SLAs, quality, productivity, staffing adherence, operational efficiency, and member experience outcomes. Lead daily, weekly, and monthly partner performance reviews with clear metrics, action plans, owners, timelines, and expected business impact. Drive accountability with external partners by identifying performance gaps, aligning on corrective actions, and ensuring sustained follow-through. Improve the Operations Challenge existing processes, technology, staffing models, and site/channel strategy rather than optimizing within them. Lead complex, cross-functional initiatives that improve member and service experience, from problem definition and stakeholder alignment through execution, change management, and post-launch measurement. Identify automation and AI opportunities within the partner operation, and help redesign the operating model as routine volume shifts to AI Agents. Influence the Business Operate with a level of entrepreneurship and ownership consistent with running a business unit, not administering a contract. Translate operational performance trends into root-cause insights, risk assessments, and data-backed recommendations. Develop concise, executive-ready updates that connect frontline performance, member impact, risks, tradeoffs, and recommended next steps — with a point of view. Build the Chime Culture Onsite Establish and sustain a shared Chime culture in our onshore BPO partner location. Partner with Chime and BPO leaders to translate Chime's values—including member obsession and financial peace of mind—into observable behaviors, coaching expectations, hiring standards, and recognition programs. Own and measure cultural health through indicators such as leadership visibility, employee engagement, attrition, coaching quality, product fluency, member sentiment, and frontline feedback closure. To thrive in this role, you have 10+ years of experience in leading on site Customer Experience operations, Partner/Vendor Management, BPO operations, or a related operational leadership role, ideally within financial services or another highly regulated environment. Executive presence and sound business judgment - comfortable building trust and influencing decisions — including with senior stakeholders — combined with high ownership and comfort operating autonomously in ambiguity. Strong analytical skills - demonstrated ability to identify trends, diagnose root causes, assess risks, and build clear, actionable recommendations — own partner performance. Demonstrated ability to challenge the status quo — a track record of redesigning a process, system, or operating model — paired with the influence, relationship-building, and communication skills to drive alignment and accountability without direct authority. Proficiency with tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Excel, Google Sheets/Slides, Looker, Jira, or similar tools. Onsite presence required at least 5 days a week Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed. #LI-Onsite #LI-AM1 Below is the base salary offered for this role and level of experience. About us We're Cortea , a Berlin startup transforming audits with AI . Manual, document-heavy audits waste expert time while demand keeps rising. Our AI-powered software and specialized AI agents remove the repetitive work so auditors can focus on judgment. Backed by top-tier VCs with >15m funding, with a working product and paying customers, we're rapidly scaling. We value first-principles thinking, speed, trust, and kindness . We build side by side in our Berlin office . Your Role We're looking for an experienced engineer who's happy anywhere in the stack and turns complex audit workflows into product auditors rely on every day. You pick up whatever a problem needs, from the data model to the interface to the agents behind it. A lot of what we build has no reference implementation. You're comfortable wading into something nobody has solved yet and shipping a first version that actually works. Our engineering team is a small, flat group of builders : strong ICs who open a laptop when they see a problem instead of scheduling a meeting. Everyone owns real product and architecture decisions, and that's exactly what we want more of. What you'll do Build the interfaces auditors work in, partnering with design to turn complex flows into something that feels effortless Build and improve the agents at the core of the product, plus the harnesses and eval pipelines around them Make the long-running workflows behind the product reliable and debuggable, so failures surface fast instead of silently Use AI heavily in your own workflow to move faster, without ever shipping output you can't stand behind Drive the how in RFCs and technical discussions with other engineers, and partner with product on the what Qualifications You'll fit here if you: Have 5+ years shipping production web applications across the stack Write production APIs and model the data behind them so it holds up under multi-tenancy and load Are strong on the frontend and can build genuinely complex UI Get how LLM agents actually work: agents, harnesses, tool use, and measuring quality with evals Keep up with where AI is moving and bring the latest tools into how you work to make yourself faster Bring a strong product mindset and real ownership of outcomes Make architectural decisions, weigh trade-offs, and build things other engineers can extend Are comfortable with ambiguity and work things out from fundamentals when there's no established answer Nice-to-haves that are a plus: Hands-on experience building agents, harnesses, or eval pipelines Data-dense or workflow-heavy B2B products Scaling multi-tenant systems as data and traffic grow Audit, finance, compliance, or another domain where being wrong is expensive Early-stage startup or fast-moving engineering environment No one checks every box. If you ship across frontend, backend, and data and own what you build, let's talk. Our tech React, TS, Tailwind, TanStack Python, Postgres, Temporal, Kafka, Redis GCP, Azure, k8s GitHub, Linear, Slack, Notion What We Offer High impact & growth: Front-row seat to scaling an AI startup with real ownership from day one Mission-driven culture: First-principles thinking, bold ideas, and a supportive team Attractive compensation: competitive salary + meaningful equity Personal development: Learning budget for courses and conferences True Berlin startup environment: Central Berlin office, team lunches, retreats, flexible vacation Interview process First Call — Intro to Cortea with our Founders Associate Liza Second Call — Technical interview with our Member of Technical Staff Jendrik Third Call — Deep dive into our culture with our Co-Founder Philipp On-site Half-Day (Berlin) — Meet the team and work on a real problem together Find Jobs in Germany on Arbeitnow

We combine clinical, technical and regulatory expertise with AI agents and software so rigorous certification can keep pace with product development at the world's most ambitious technology companies, without lowering the safety bar. Streamline certificate transfers by coordinating next steps with customers and outgoing certification bodies. Triage medical device change notifications and coordinate the appropriate specialist review, improving how changes are categorised and routed. Keep customers and colleagues informed of progress, outstanding actions and next steps. Work with product and engineering to improve procedures and automate routine workflows, so your work increasingly focuses on the most complex customers and cases. Required qualifications 3+ years' experience in operations, project delivery, or a related discipline. A degree or equivalent in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, or another analytically demanding subject, or comparable achievement through technical work, research or independent projects. Evidence of solving difficult problems independently. You can explain an unfamiliar problem you tackled, how you broke it down, the decisions you made and the result you achieved. An eye for detail. Experience reviewing detailed documents or data for completeness and accuracy. Preferred qualifications Experience in healthcare, certification or another regulated industry.
