What You'll Do: Global Team Leadership & Operations: Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing, geographically distributed team of Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) across North America, Europe, and Asia. Architect the AI Testing Strategy: Define and execute the roadmap for integrating AI, LLMs, and autonomous test agents directly into our testing lifecycle. Implement generative AI capabilities for automated test case generation, smart failure triage, self-healing test scripts, and dynamic edge-case synthesis. Own Runtimes Quality Strategy: Establish testing strategies for low-latency, high-throughput C/Lua/Rust data planes. Modernize Frameworks & CI/CD Pipelines: Oversee the architectural evolution of our end-to-end, performance, regression, and chaos-testing automation harnesses embedded within modern CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Docker, K8s). Shift-Left Quality & Governance: Drive quality ownership upstream. Partner closely with Software Engineering and Product Management to embed rigorous testability standards into initial architectural designs. Define Enterprise-Grade Metrics: Establish and monitor clear QE health indicators (e.g., CI signal reliability, automation coverage, defect density, time-to-triage, and release stability). What You'll Bring: 10+ Years in Software Engineering / SDET: Proven track record building and scaling enterprise software test automation systems. 4+ Years in Engineering Management: Direct experience leading distributed or global software engineering/SDET teams. Hands-on AI Integration Vision: Proven experience applying LLMs, Generative AI, or autonomous agent frameworks (e.g., Model Context Protocol, agentic tool-calling, synthetic data generation) to software quality or developer workflows. Operational Excellence: Demonstrated ability to manage follow-the-sun operational cadence, vendor partnerships, and cross-timezone execution seamlessly. Bonus Points: Direct experience testing high-performance networking data planes, proxies, or API Gateways (e.g., Kong, NGINX, Envoy). Background in performance, chaos engineering (e.g., Gremlin, Litmus), and load testing high-availability SaaS platforms. Active involvement or contributions to open-source quality frameworks or AI development tooling. #LI-BR2 About Kong: Kong Inc., the AI Connectivity Company, is building the connectivity layer of AI. Our Mission We're not your average benefits platform – we're the driving force that uplifts people's lives. Our technology connects the entire benefits ecosystem, creating better outcomes for employers, employees, brokers, and providers. Our mission is clear: to build a world where everything works at its best, ensuring every employee gets the support they need to thrive—both at work and beyond. Your Mission As our Software Engineer (Data) , you'll build and run the pipelines, orchestration, and infrastructure that move data across Ben: in from our product and the tools we use, in from our customers, and back out to them again. It's the plumbing the whole company and our customers depend on, and it has to stay reliable. We serve global enterprise customers with strict security and reliability requirements. You'll own real work from day one. You'll have a strong team of cross functional engineers alongside you, room to grow into harder problems, and the freedom to do the job your way. What you'll be working on Own everything that flows into Ben: build and maintain the ingestion pipelines that bring data into our warehouse, with Fivetran for managed sources and custom pipelines where we need them. Keep everything running on time: own the orchestration that keeps data moving on schedule and recovers cleanly when something breaks. Scale and manage our data infrastructure: build and manage our data infrastructure as code with Terraform, using mainly AWS services. Connect Ben to every system our customers run: build enterprise-grade pipelines and connectors for our customers, bringing their data in, for example from HR and payroll systems, and getting accurate data back out to them, reliably and securely, even at the volumes large customers bring. Build the data layer our agents act on: help connect our data to the AI agents and services we're building, including through MCP connectors, so they get the right context at the right time. Shape what we build: work with product and other stakeholders to scope problems and agree on simple but scalable solutions. Build it to enterprise standard: build to current security practice, for example the OWASP Top 10 and the AWS Well-Architected Framework. Behind the scenes Ben runs on Python 3, Django, PostgreSQL, and React, on AWS. Our data platform today is built around Fivetran, AWS DMS or custom pipelines for ingestion, dbt for transformation, PostgreSQL on AWS RDS as the warehouse, and n8n or AWS Lambda for automation between systems. We manage our infrastructure as code with Terraform and use different AWS services depending on requirements. We have adopted frontier level agentic development practices and continue to push the envelope of what's possible with current technologies. Your skills and experience Strong experience with Python and SQL . A few years building and running production data pipelines that other people relied on. Comfortable with infrastructure as code , ideally Terraform, and hands-on with AWS, for example Lambda, ECS, Glue, S3, RDS. A good grasp of ETL/ELT and orchestration . Experience building or running data integrations and connectors , especially ones that other companies or customers depend on, is a real plus. Solid software engineering fundamentals : clean code, sensible design, and tests you can rely on. You keep security in mind when you build applications and configure infrastructure, and you know what enterprise customers expect of their data. Nice to have, not essential : Experience working on customer-facing data integrations such as HRIS or payroll feeds via SFTP and in EDI format Experience with MCP server development , or different ways of preparing data for AI agents such as ontology modelling, context, knowledge graphs, and semantic layers. We don't expect all of it. We do expect curiosity about it. Why join us? Ben's customers are large enterprise employers, and the hundreds of thousands of people who work for them rely on us to get their benefits right, every time. That depends on data moving accurately between their systems and ours, every cycle. You get to work on the data infrastructure that makes this run like clockwork. At the same time, Ben is an AI-native organisation. Agents are already doing a lot of impactful work here, and they can only do it on data they can trust. That raises questions a dashboard never had to answer. How fresh does this need to be for an agent to act on it? How do you match the same entity across tools? How do you control what an agent is allowed to see? Very few engineers have answered those in production. You'd be one of them. You'll take ownership of large, complex problem spaces, help design how they scale, and build an agentic layer few engineers have built anywhere yet, and you'll see the impact of it: Ben supports hundreds of thousands of people across 30+ countries. Our Compensation & Benefits It's important to us to practise what we preach when it comes to benefits. We know what good looks like and we want to provide the best for our team, with a comprehensive and inclusive benefits package. You'll have a choice over the things that are most important to you. You can see a selection below, with the full offering here . 💰 Competitive base salary + equity, so you own what you build ⭐ Bonus scheme designed to reward and recognise high performance 💳 £100 monthly personal Ben Balance: for whatever works for you, whether that's Netflix, Spotify, or a really expensive cup of coffee! Our new product bets include routing and workforce management for physical operations. The portfolio has paying customers and early traction. You'll help shape what comes next, working directly with customers to understand their operations, test ideas and build solutions they choose to use. You'll stay close to the work through production, customer adoption and scale. This is a technical leadership role with substantial hands-on engineering. You'll define important problems and make product and technical decisions alongside Product, Design and Engineering partners. You'll bring the judgement to move forward when requirements are incomplete, and the influence to align other teams around a clear direction. What you will do Work directly with customers and customer-facing teams to understand unmet needs, test assumptions and identify opportunities worth pursuing. Agree on success measures with Product and Design before investing in a solution. Lead ambiguous initiatives end to end, from discovery and prototypes through production rollout, adoption and iteration. Use customer feedback and product data to decide what to improve, expand or stop. Write and ship code on the critical path. Work across services, APIs and customer-facing experiences as the problem requires, combining technical depth with the ability to learn unfamiliar parts of the product. You can explain your contribution to measurable outcomes such as adoption, revenue growth, retention, customer efficiency or cost to serve. Strong product judgement. You have worked directly with customers, clarified poorly defined problems and made decisions using evidence, including changing direction when an initial idea did not work. Deep hands-on software engineering ability, with recent experience designing, implementing and operating production systems. You can move from a prototype to maintainable software and explain the trade-offs along the way. Experience scaling products and the systems behind them. You know how to identify the next constraint, balance speed with reliability, and make technical investments that support customer and business growth. Technical leadership across team boundaries. You have built alignment without formal authority, made other engineers more effective, and communicated difficult choices clearly to technical and business partners. Experience that could be useful Experience building B2B software through an early growth stage, or working on routing, workforce management or other software for physical operations. We value evidence of learning a complex customer domain and delivering results; previous industry experience is helpful, rather than essential. What success looks like Customers adopt the capabilities you help build and can see the benefit in their day-to-day operations. The products remain dependable as usage grows. Your technical decisions support measurable business progress, and the teams around you can deliver more effectively because of your work.
