Full TimeOn-siteMid
pythongorustsredatadogpytorch+5

As a Research Engineer on our team, you will partner with Research Scientists to turn research ideas into working systems, building the data, tooling, and infrastructure that enable rapid iteration, trustworthy evaluation, and a smooth path from prototype to production. Building on our track record of AI-powered solutions (e.g., Bits AI , Bits Evolve , and our time series foundation model ), Datadog AI Research tackles high-risk, high-reward problems grounded in real-world challenges in cloud observability and security. We are focused on two research areas: World Models for Observability -- Training multimodal foundation models that learn the joint dynamics of distributed systems across metrics, traces, logs, topology, and events. These models power advanced forecasting, anomaly detection, root cause analysis, counterfactual simulation ("what if?"), and provide a learned planning backbone for our autonomous agents. Trained Agents for Observability -- Post-training models to operate autonomously across Datadog's domain. SRE incident response is our first target, with a clear path to code repair, security response, and infrastructure optimization. We build the simulation environments, RL training loops, and evaluation infrastructure needed to train agents that match or surpass frontier models at a fraction of the cost. What You'll Do: Build and operate multimodal data pipelines, training and evaluation infrastructure, benchmarks, and internal tooling Implement models, run experiments at scale, and profile for reliability, performance, and cost Build simulation environments and replay infrastructure for agent training and evaluation Orchestrate distributed training and distributed RL with Ray, including scheduling, scaling, and failure recovery Establish rigorous automated benchmarks and regression tests for world model predictions, agent performance, and simulation fidelity Collaborate with Research Scientists, Product, and Engineering to integrate capabilities into Datadog's products and to harden prototypes into reliable services Contribute to research publications at top-tier conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML), and produce high-quality code, documentation, and open-source artifacts Who You Are: You have depth in distributed computing, RL Infra, and ML systems for training and inference at scale; experience with Ray, Slurm, or similar frameworks is a plus You are proficient in Python, familiar with a systems language (e.g., Rust, C++, or Go), and comfortable with modern cloud and data infrastructure You have practical experience implementing and operating ML training and inference systems (e.g., PyTorch or JAX), including containerization, orchestration, and GPU acceleration You have practical experience with large-scale model training and fine-tuning, including frameworks like Megatron-LM, DeepSpeed, SkyRL, VeRL, or TorchTitan, and techniques such as SFT, RLVR, RLHF, and efficient inference (quantization, speculative decoding) You can explain design and performance trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences You have experience supporting or contributing to research publications Bonus Points (any of the following): You have strong software engineering skills with experience in domains such as observability, SRE, or security You have experience bridging research prototypes and real-world product applications, especially with large foundation models, world models, or RL-trained agents You have a passion for pushing the boundaries of AI with a focus on customer impact and scalable deployment You have hands-on experience with GPU programming and optimization, including CUDA You have experience writing production data pipelines and applications You have experience building simulation or sandbox environments for agent training Datadog values people from all walks of life. We understand not everyone will meet all the above qualifications on day one. That's okay. If you're passionate about technology and want to grow your skills, we encourage you to apply. Benefits and Growth: Competitive global benefits New hire stock equity (RSUs) and employee stock purchase plan (ESPP) Opportunity to collaborate closely with colleagues across the Datadog offices in New York City and Paris Opportunity to attend and present at conferences and meetups Intra-departmental mentor and buddy program for in-house networking An inclusive company culture, ability to join our Community Guilds (Datadog employee resource groups) Benefits and Growth listed above may vary based on the country of your employment and the nature of your employment with Datadog. Senior Applied Scientist - AI Platform
Full TimeOn-siteSenior
pythonsredatadogllmarchitectureinstagram+2

AI Platform builds the foundations of Datadog's AI efforts. The org is 70+ people organised in three pillars: training and serving (GPU clusters, distributed training, low-level infrastructure), agents (agent harnesses, memory systems, the internal AI gateway that routes every LLM request at Datadog), and evaluation and experimentation. This role sits in the evaluation and experimentation pillar, which owns Datadog's shared annotation and evaluation infrastructure — including the evaluation scenario store and the telemetry archival systems used across the Bits org. Together they let an agent travel back in time and query what Datadog looked like at the exact moment an incident happened, so scenarios can be replayed and agent performance tracked over time. Specifically, you'll be the first applied scientist on GenSim (Generative Simulations), the team that builds the environments Datadog's agents learn in. GenSim doesn't replay sampled telemetry — it stands up real, fully instrumented applications that talk to Datadog, drives them with representative traffic, injects controlled failures, and records what happens. Because GenSim injected the failure, it knows the ground truth. That corpus — hundreds of postmortem-derived scenarios and thousands of runnable applications — is today the primary source of post-training data for Datadog's own SRE model, and the substrate that Bits AI SRE and our other agents are trained and evaluated against. The team has no applied science support today and is learning post-training data methodology on the fly. That's the gap this role fills, and the open questions are the interesting part. How do you tell whether a generated environment is actually representative of the messy, incomplete telemetry real customers run — rather than a suspiciously clean one where every monitor exists and every service emits complete logs? How do you make injected problems genuinely hard, and how do you even measure difficulty? How do you define and control the quality of post-training data when correctness, representativeness and difficulty pull in different directions? How do you evaluate an agent end to end when the trajectory is non-deterministic? Creating simulated agent environments for monitoring and SRE work is not well solved in open source or in published research, and Datadog is the leading company in this field. If those are the problems you want to spend your time on, come build this with us. What You'll Do: Own the applied science direction for GenSim: set the methodology and the forward-looking technical calls on how simulated environments and post-training data should be built, on a team where that decision-making does not exist yet. Define, measure and raise the quality of post-training data — basic correctness, representativeness against the real distribution of customer systems and production telemetry, and difficulty — and make those measures something the team can act on release over release. Close the realism gap. Simulated environments today are too clean and the injected problems are not yet hard enough; you'll drive the research and the engineering that make them look like real, imperfect production systems. Build scalable, production-grade systems rather than research scripts. The output is not just a dataset — it is a system of synthetic environments that must be reliable and invokable inside a training loop. Determine how this data is best applied, in LLM post-training and in evaluation, and own the agent and LLM application evaluation approaches for these environments. Work cross-functionally with the engineers and applied scientists on adjacent teams — Bits AI SRE, the model training effort, and the wider evaluation and experimentation pillar — so that what you learn moves freely in both directions. Who You Are: You have a PhD, MS or equivalent research experience in a scientific field, with strong applied mathematics grounding. 6+ years of relevant applied science or ML engineering experience, including setting technical direction for others. You have hands-on experience with LLM and agent post-training data: how it is created, managed, and how training-data quality is controlled. This is the requirement that matters most. You have real domain expertise in LLMs and agentic applications — not classical ML fine-tuning. Fine-tuning classifiers or traditional models is a different problem from the one this team is solving. You have evaluated agents or LLM applications, and can define what 'good' means before you measure it. You are a strong programmer and production software engineer. Python at minimum, plus the ability to ship scalable production systems and work with distributed systems. You collaborate well across engineering and science teams, and you're comfortable being the domain expert who decides what comes next. You thrive in ambiguity and can make sound technical calls when the path isn't yet defined. Bonus Points: Hands-on LLM fine-tuning, post-training or model training experience. Background in statistics, experiment design and data analysis. Experience deploying production-level ML infrastructure. Observability or monitoring systems background. Architecture-level understanding of LLMs. Benefits & Growth: New hire stock equity (RSUs) and employee stock purchase plan (ESPP) Continuous professional development, product training, and career pathing Intra-departmental mentor and buddy program for in-house networking An inclusive company culture and the ability to join our Community Guilds Access to Inclusion Talks, our internal panel discussions Free, global Spring Health benefits for employees and dependents age 6+ Competitive global benefits Benefits and Growth listed above may vary based on the country of your employment and the nature of your employment with Datadog. #LI-Hybrid About Datadog: Datadog is the leading observability and security platform for the AI era, providing businesses with unified visibility across the technology stack to manage complexity at scale. Senior Data Scientist
CarwowLondon, Germany6 days ago
Full TimeOn-siteSenior
pythongcpdockersqlsnowflakebigquery+15

OUR MISSION To become the car-changing destination of choice. By combining technology, media and deep automotive expertise, we've turned how people buy, sell, advertise and lease cars on its head. What started as a simple reviews site is now one of the largest online car-changing destinations in Europe. Last year alone we grew over 50% with nearly £3bn worth of cars bought on site, while £1.8bn of cars were listed for sale through our Sell My Car service. In 2024 we went big and acquired Autovia - creators of AutoExpress and Evo magazines - doubling our audience overnight. Together we now have one of the biggest YouTube channels in the world with almost 10m subscribers and over 1.1 billion annual views, while we sell 1.2 million print copies of our magazines and have an annual web content reach over 350million. And we're a long way from done! THE ROLE We're looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our award-winning Data Science team at a pivotal moment. Carwow operates a two-sided marketplace — connecting car buyers and sellers at scale — and data science sits at the heart of how we make that marketplace smarter, faster, and more valuable for everyone in it. In fact, we recently won GenAI initiative of the Year at the British Data Awards. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role working centrally across the business. You'll partner with teams spanning Commercial, Marketing, Product, Finance, Engineering and Operations — developing and deploying ML and AI solutions that drive outcomes across both sides of our marketplace. The problems you'll work on are genuinely varied: pricing models, propensity and demand signals that sharpen marketing spend, personalised recommendations for our web product and CRM, and LLM-powered solutions for operational challenges like document verification. You'll translate ambiguous business problems into structured, production-ready solutions — and you'll be expected to deliver them end-to-end, from first principles through to being deployment-ready and beyond. WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING End-to-End ML & AI Delivery: Lead data science initiatives from problem framing through to deployment, monitoring, and iteration — delivering the full production lifecycle. With no dedicated ML engineering function, you'll be responsible for ensuring your solutions are robust, scalable, and performing in the real world long after they ship. GenAI & LLM Application: Design and build LLM-powered solutions where they create genuine business value — document processing, intelligent search, content understanding, and beyond. Apply them alongside classical ML with clear judgement about where each approach earns its place. Commercial Impact: Connect your work directly to business outcomes. Whether you're building a model to improve marketing efficiency, a pricing signal to sharpen commercial decisions, or a recommendation engine to increase conversion — you understand the business lever you're pulling and design your solutions accordingly. Prototyping & Experimentation: Move fast to test ideas before committing to full-scale development. Define rigorous success metrics upfront, validate honestly, and know when to double down and when to walk away. Cross-Functional Partnership: Work closely with Commercial, Marketing, Product, Finance, Engineering and Operations stakeholders to understand problems deeply before reaching for a solution. Translate findings into clear, actionable narratives for both technical and non-technical audiences. Standards & Craft: Contribute to shared best practices, documentation, and ways of working that raise the bar for the data science function — and help more junior team members grow alongside you. Drive continued adoption of AI capabilities to drive efficiencies, automation and constantly leverage new capabilities. WHAT YOU'LL NEED Please note: We know that no candidate will be the perfect match for all we've listed in this posting, so we'd encourage you to apply if you feel you're close to the brief but not an exact match. Ideally you'll have Commercial Mindset: You think about business impact first. You understand how your models connect to revenue, efficiency, or customer outcomes — and you use that to prioritise, scope, and communicate your work. Stakeholder Partnership: Proven ability to work with commercial, marketing, and product stakeholders — translating business problems into well-scoped solutions and communicating technical solutions, challenges and outcomes clearly at all levels. Sound Judgement: You navigate the tooling landscape with clear eyes — knowing when classical ML is right, when GenAI unlocks something new, and when a simpler solution is the more honest answer. Strong instincts for scalability, reliability, and explainability. [Bonus] Marketplace or Two-Sided Platform Experience: Understanding of supply/demand dynamics and how data science creates leverage in a marketplace context. TEHCNICAL SKILLSET Proven ML Experience: A strong track record of building, deploying, and maintaining ML models in Python in a production environment — not just notebooks. You've owned models after they ship and know how to keep them healthy. Full-Lifecycle Delivery (MLOps): Comfortable delivering the end-to-end production lifecycle — model training, versioning, monitoring, and champion/challenger experimentation — without relying on a dedicated ML engineering team to carry that responsibility. GenAI & LLM Expertise: Hands-on experience building LLM-powered solutions that deliver measurable business value. You understand how to apply, evaluate, and extend these tools — and you're honest about where they fall short. Technical Depth: Solid experience in a cloud ML environment with software engineering principles — version control, code reviews, unit testing, and familiarity with containerisation. Quantitative Rigour: Strong foundation in statistical evaluation and experiment design. You can define and defend success metrics, and you know when a model is degrading and what to do about it. [Bonus] Experience with VertexAI TOOLS & TECHNOLOGIES Languages: Python, SQL Data & Transformation: dbt, Snowflake, BigQuery Visualisation & BI: Looker Engineering & MLOps: Docker, GitHub Workflow & Orchestration: Vertex AI Pipelines (GCP), Kubeflow LLMs & GenAI: Gemini API, Claude API INTERVIEW PROCESS Step 1: People Team Screening Call (30 min) Step 2: Hiring Manager Call: Experience (45 min) Step 3: Technical Task: covering both Modelling & Production with Presentation (60 min + Task) Step 4: Values Interview (45 min) WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU Hybrid working Competitive salary to fund that dream holiday to Bali Matched pension contributions for a peaceful retirement Share options - when we thrive, so do you! Vitality Private Healthcare, for peace of mind, plus eyecare vouchers Life Assurance for (even more) peace of mind Monthly coaching sessions with Spill - our mental wellbeing partner Enhanced holiday package, plus Bank Holidays 28 days annual leave 1 day for your wedding 1 day off when you move house - because moving is hard enough without work! For your third year anniversary, get 30 days of annual leave per year For your tenth year anniversary, get 35 days of annual leave per year Option to buy 3 extra days of holiday per year Work from abroad for a month Inclusive parental, partner and shared parental leave, fertility treatment and pregnancy loss policies Bubble childcare support and discounted nanny fees for little ones The latest tech (Macbook or Surface) to power your gif-sending talents Up to £500/€550 home office allowance for that massage chair you've been talking about Generous learning and development budget to help you master your craft Regular social events: tech lunches, coffee with the exec sessions, lunch 8 learns, book clubs, social events/anything else you pester us for Refer a friend, get paid.
